Tubeless road bike tyres
Tubeless gravel and cyclocross tyres
Tubeless mountain bike tyres
Compatible bicycle tyre and rim systems approved for liquid latex sealant

Claimed puncture-sealing capacity: 6mm or larger, depending on puncture shape, tyre construction, remaining sealant volume and operating pressure

Sealant life: More than six months under suitable conditions

Installation method:

Injectable through most removable-core tubeless valves
Can be poured directly into the tyre before seating the final section of bead
Compatible injector is sold separately

Formula: Proprietary natural and synthetic latex blend

Reinforcing material: Optimised carbon-fibre strands

Dispersion technology: Advanced foaming agents

Ammonia content: Ammonia free

Valve compatibility:

Suitable for injection through many conventional tubeless valves after the valve core is removed
Not injectable through Reserve Fillmore valves
Compatibility should be checked before using valves with narrow internal passages, filters or proprietary internal structures

Maintenance interval: Inspect the sealant periodically rather than relying solely on the maximum claimed service life. Australian heat and low humidity can accelerate evaporation.

Accessories required:

Tubeless-compatible tyre and rim
Correctly installed tubeless rim tape, unless the wheel has a sealed tape-free rim bed
Tubeless valve
Valve-core removal tool for injection
Compatible sealant injector, if injecting through the valve
Suitable air supply or tubeless inflator for initial tyre seating

The current SILCA Ultimate Tubeless Sealant uses a hybrid blend of natural and synthetic latex. Natural latex provides strong initial sealing performance, while the synthetic component is intended to slow drying and extend the usable life of the liquid inside the tyre. This revised one-step formula replaces the maintenance-heavy two-part system associated with SILCA’s earlier sealant generation.

Its most distinctive feature is the use of optimised carbon-fibre strands. When a puncture occurs, escaping air carries liquid sealant and reinforcing fibres towards the hole. The fibres collect across the opening and form a supporting structure, while the latex coagulates around them. This creates a reinforced plug rather than relying on liquid latex alone.

Advanced foaming agents help distribute the lightweight fibres through the sealant and carry them towards a puncture. This is particularly relevant in fast-rotating road tyres, where the sealant must reach and close a hole quickly before excessive air pressure is lost.

The updated fibres are sufficiently refined for installation through most conventional removable-core tubeless valves. This is a meaningful improvement over the original SILCA Ultimate Tubeless Sealant with FiberFoam, which contained longer carbon-fibre strands and normally had to be poured directly into the tyre.

The ammonia-free formula is intended to reduce the potential for unpleasant odour and material compatibility concerns associated with some traditional latex sealants. As with any sealant, compatibility with the tyre, rim tape, valve and insert manufacturer’s instructions should still be confirmed.

The product is designed to remain active for more than six months, although real service life depends heavily on temperature, humidity, tyre casing and storage. Hot Australian summers can shorten the inspection interval, particularly on bikes stored in garages, vehicles or direct sunlight.

Recommended bicycle applications:

700C road and all-road tyres
650B road, gravel and mountain bike tyres
26-inch mountain bike tyres
27.5-inch mountain bike tyres
29-inch mountain bike tyres

Indicative quantity per tyre:

Road: 60–90ml
Gravel: 90–120ml
Mountain bike: 120–180ml

For a typical 700C road tyre, the 65ml bottle provides a practical single-tyre quantity. Larger gravel and mountain bike tyres may require more than one 65ml bottle, particularly during a new installation.

Container dimensions:

Exact bottle width, length and diameter are not published consistently by SILCA.
Packaging dimensions can differ between production runs and regional distributors.
Container dimensions should be measured from Australian retail stock before being added to a freight or marketplace data feed.

Fit considerations:

The tyre and rim must be rated for tubeless use.
Tubeless tyres should be fitted within the rim manufacturer’s approved width and pressure limits.
Reserve Fillmore valves are specifically excluded from valve injection.
Tyre inserts can increase the amount of sealant required and may obstruct sealant movement or valve access.
Compatibility should be confirmed before combining the sealant with another brand or chemistry.

SILCA Ultimate Tubeless Sealant is best suited to performance road cyclists, gravel racers, mountain bike riders and high-mileage enthusiasts who want strong puncture protection without checking or replenishing their sealant every few weeks.

Installation and care:

Shake the bottle thoroughly before every use so the reinforcing fibres are evenly suspended.
Clean old sealant, heavy latex deposits and valve obstructions before changing formulas.
Confirm that the tyre, rim tape, valve and rim are tubeless compatible.
Remove the valve core before injection.
Use a compatible injector with a passage large enough for the fibre-reinforced formula.
Do not inject through Reserve Fillmore valves.
Replace the valve core carefully and inflate within the tyre and rim manufacturers’ pressure limits.
Rotate and shake the wheel after installation to distribute sealant across the tread, sidewalls and bead area.
Check for leaks using soapy water if the tyre loses pressure rapidly.
Inspect the liquid level regularly, especially during hot and dry weather.
Never assume the sealant is still liquid solely because the tyre holds air.
Store the bottle tightly closed in a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight and freezing conditions.
Keep the product away from children and pets.
Avoid eye contact, ingestion and prolonged skin exposure.
The formula contains latex and may cause a reaction in people with latex sensitivity.
Follow the current safety data sheet and local disposal requirements.
Wipe spills promptly, as cured latex can be difficult to remove from clothing and porous surfaces.

CO2 inflation:

CO2 can be used for emergency inflation or tyre seating, but prolonged exposure can alter the chemistry of latex sealant and shorten its effective life. If CO2 is used, deflate the tyre when practical and reinflate it with ordinary air.

Warranty:

SILCA classifies sealant as a consumable product that naturally degrades through use. It is covered against manufacturing defects for two years, but normal drying, depletion, contamination and puncture-related consumption are not manufacturing faults.

Stu Kerton reviewed the original 473ml SILCA Ultimate Tubeless Sealant for road.cc on 3 July 2022 and awarded it 8 out of 10. Testing focused heavily on road-bike performance, an area where many sealants struggle because higher tyre pressure can repeatedly force liquid out of a puncture before a permanent seal forms.

During controlled puncture testing, the sealant closed cuts up to approximately 6mm and sealed the largest tested cut in roughly 30 seconds. The review particularly praised its ability to work at road pressures of approximately 90–100psi, sealing quickly enough to limit air loss and potentially avoid a roadside reinflation. Its principal disadvantage was its relatively high price per litre.

The Radavist reported the release of the substantially revised formula on 18 February 2025. Its launch coverage noted that SILCA had spent approximately two and a half years reworking the sealant to address the original version’s main limitations: difficult valve injection, comparatively rapid drying and reliance on a separate replenisher. The current formula was presented as an easier, longer-lasting one-step product rather than a minor packaging update.

Stan’s NoTubes Race Sealant

Stan’s Race Sealant is intended for riders wanting maximum sealing performance from the well-established Stan’s platform.

Pros:

Strong puncture-sealing capability
Widely available through Australian bike shops
Established reputation in mountain biking and gravel
Aggressive particle content for larger punctures

Cons:

Not recommended for injection through a valve
Requires more frequent inspection
Can form latex deposits inside the tyre
