Wide 30mm internal rim
The 30mm internal width creates a broad foundation for modern 40-60C gravel tyres. A wider tyre bed supports the casing more effectively than a narrow road rim, helping the tyre maintain a stable shape when cornering or operating at reduced pressure.
This increased support can improve traction, comfort and steering consistency on loose gravel, exposed roots, washboard roads and rocky trails. The achievable pressure depends on rider weight, tyre construction, terrain and whether tubeless inserts are installed.
Hooked tubeless-ready construction
The Drive G50 CS uses a hooked bead rather than a hookless interface. The bead hooks provide positive mechanical retention for compatible clincher and tubeless tyres, making the wheels attractive to riders who want broad tyre choice and conventional hooked-rim security.
Although hooked rims avoid some hookless-specific restrictions, the pressure limits printed on both the wheel and tyre must still be followed. The lower of the two published limits always takes priority.
50mm aerodynamic rim profile
The 50mm rim depth positions the Drive G50 CS as a performance gravel wheelset rather than a traditional shallow adventure wheel. Deeper carbon rims are designed to reduce aerodynamic drag and improve speed retention, particularly on exposed gravel roads, flat racing sectors and sealed-road transfers.
The 37mm external width creates a smoother transition to high-volume gravel tyres than a narrow road wheel. Actual aerodynamic performance will depend on the fitted tyre’s measured width, tread pattern and casing shape.
3.3mm carbon spokes
The carbon spokes are central to the Drive G50 CS’s performance character. Carbon has a much higher stiffness-to-weight ratio than conventional stainless-steel spoke material, helping the wheel respond immediately when the rider accelerates, climbs out of the saddle or changes direction.
That stiffness should create a sharper and more direct ride than the steel-spoke Drive G50 SS. Tyre choice and pressure therefore become important for balancing efficiency with comfort on rough surfaces.
Unlike completely moulded monocoque wheels, the spokes are individually attached using secure-locking nipples. Elitewheels includes four spare spokes to support future maintenance.
Optimised spoke arrangement
The front wheel uses 21 spokes, while the rear uses 24. The asymmetric 2:1 arrangement places more spokes on the heavily loaded side of each wheel, accounting for the forces generated by the disc rotor at the front and drivetrain at the rear.
This configuration is designed to improve spoke-tension balance, lateral stiffness and power transfer without adding the weight of an unnecessarily high spoke count.
One-piece titanium freehub
Elitewheels integrates the 60-tooth ratchet and freehub body into one titanium component. Titanium provides high strength, good impact resistance and excellent resistance to water, corrosion and chemical exposure.
Machining the freehub and ratchet as one piece removes a separate interface between the two components. This supports direct power transmission while helping reduce weight and potential movement within the mechanism.
Rapid 6-degree engagement
The 60-tooth ratchet produces an engagement angle of 6 degrees. This means the cranks rotate only a short distance before the freehub engages and transfers power to the rear wheel.
Fast engagement is useful when accelerating out of gravel corners, restarting on steep climbs or applying intermittent pedal input through technical terrain. It can also make a bike feel more responsive during repeated changes in pace.
TPI steel bearings
TPI steel bearings provide a practical balance of smooth operation, durability and replacement availability. They may carry a minor friction penalty against premium ceramic bearings under controlled conditions, but steel bearings can be better suited to riders who prioritise predictable long-term servicing.
Carbon construction and testing
Elitewheels states that the Drive G50 CS undergoes more than 20 laboratory procedures covering durability, longevity and stiffness. The wheelset has passed the UCI vertical impact test and is approved for UCI competition.
