HydroActiv Polyurethane

The outer contact layer uses Supacaz’s advanced HydroActiv polyurethane formulation. It is designed to remain tacky when exposed to moisture, helping riders retain a secure grip during wet-weather training, humid rides and harder efforts where perspiration can make smoother bar tape slippery. High resistance to UV exposure, sweat and changing weather also supports durability in Australian conditions.

Kush Foam

The middle layer is made from Supacaz’s proprietary Kush Foam. This cushioning layer is engineered to reduce high-frequency vibration while using a relatively small amount of foam, preserving a controlled and responsive feel through the bars. It can help reduce hand and wrist fatigue on coarse-chip roads, uneven shoulders and longer gravel sectors.

Signature Embossed Surface

Tapered Edge Construction

CycleTechReview tested Supacaz Super Sticky Kush on a 44cm road handlebar fitted with hydraulic electronic-shift controls. Reviewer Paul Horta-Hopkins found the tape soft, slightly stretchy and straightforward to position, with enough length to cut separate lever-covering strips and still complete the wrap. The expanding aluminium bar plugs were praised for their secure retention, while the finishing tape could be repositioned without leaving residue. On the bike, the tacky surface kept gloved hands planted without noticeable slipping and appeared particularly promising for wet conditions.

Cleaning

Wipe the surface regularly with a clean, damp cloth and mild bike-safe soap. Cleaning after sweaty summer rides, wet commutes or dusty gravel outings will help maintain the tape’s texture and appearance.

Products to avoid

Do not apply strong solvents, abrasive cleaners, aggressive bicycle degreasers or petroleum-based chemicals. These products may damage the polyurethane surface, affect the adhesive backing or cause the finishing tape to lift.

Installation care

Apply consistent, moderate tension rather than stretching the tape as tightly as possible. Use even overlap on each side and take particular care around the lever clamps and sharp handlebar curves. Riders unfamiliar with wrapping drop bars should consider professional handlebar tape installation as part of a bicycle service.

Inspection

Check regularly for cuts, loose edges, surface separation and excessive wear around the brake hoods. Confirm that both expanding bar plugs remain tight, particularly after transporting the bike, riding rough gravel or experiencing a fall.

Replacement

Handlebar tape is a consumable bicycle part. Replace it when the gripping surface becomes excessively smooth, torn, loose or difficult to clean. It should also be removed following a substantial crash so the handlebar can be inspected for hidden damage.
