Notable Tech, Materials & Construction

Carbon Blade Retention System

The LOOK Keo Blade Carbon Ceramic Vision Pedals replace a conventional metal retention spring with a carbon Blade positioned beneath the pedal body.

This carbon Blade performs two functions. It controls cleat retention and contributes to the pedal’s low-profile aerodynamic shape. The design produces a clean, positive engagement that experienced LOOK riders often describe as secure and reassuring under high power.

Unlike pedals with a retention screw, Blade tension is changed by replacing the carbon Blade with a different rating. This approach provides clearly defined release characteristics but does not offer gradual adjustment with a simple tool.

LOOK recommends choosing the lower tension if a rider is uncertain between two options.

Blade Selection

8Nm Blade:

  • Best suited to cyclists learning to use clipless pedals
  • Easier release
  • Appropriate when straightforward disengagement is the priority

12Nm Blade:

  • Balanced retention and release
  • Suitable for regular road riders
  • Sensible starting point for many experienced recreational cyclists

16Nm Blade:

  • Firmer retention
  • Appropriate for intensive training and racing
  • Better suited to experienced clipless-pedal users

20Nm Blade:

  • Maximum available hold
  • Intended for racers and powerful sprinters
  • Requires confident and well-practised release technique

A higher Blade rating does not improve power transfer by itself. Retention should be strong enough for secure riding but not so firm that releasing a foot becomes unnecessarily difficult.

Ceramic Bearing System

Ceramic bearing balls are exceptionally hard, smooth and resistant to deformation. LOOK claims its ceramic system can reduce rolling resistance by approximately 18% and provide four to six times the service life of conventional steel-bearing alternatives under the company’s test conditions.

Actual longevity will depend on:

  • Rider weight and power
  • Riding frequency
  • Water and contamination exposure
  • Cleaning practices
  • Bearing adjustment
  • Pedal strikes
  • Storage conditions
  • Maintenance quality

No pedal bearing creates a dramatic speed increase on its own. The practical value of the ceramic system lies in its smooth running, low friction and premium durability when properly maintained.

Large 705mm² Contact Surface

The 705mm² contact area creates broad support beneath the road shoe. This helps distribute pressure and gives the rider a stable platform during sprinting, climbing and sustained efforts.

A large contact area is particularly useful when combined with a stiff carbon-soled cycling shoe. The pedal and shoe work together to reduce unwanted flex and create a secure connection to the crank.

The 67mm platform width also helps stabilise the foot laterally. Riders may notice this most when accelerating forcefully, climbing out of the saddle or applying power through a fast corner exit.

Vision Biomotion Lighting

The lights are positioned at the rider’s feet rather than on the seatpost or saddle bag. As the cyclist pedals, each light follows a distinctive circular movement.

This biomotion can help other road users recognise the shape and movement of a cyclist. Instead of seeing only a small static red point, a driver sees lights moving in a pattern associated with pedalling.

LOOK claims that pedal or heel-positioned moving lights can make cyclists significantly more noticeable than a static seatpost light. These claims should not be interpreted as a guarantee that every driver will see or react appropriately to the rider.

The pedal lights should be used as an additional visibility layer alongside:

  • A suitable primary rear light
  • A suitable front light
  • Reflective or high-contrast clothing where appropriate
  • Predictable road positioning
  • Clear signalling
  • Defensive riding awareness

Four Lighting Modes

Day Flash

Day Flash produces bright, attention-grabbing bursts intended to remain visible in daylight. It is particularly useful for dawn rides, overcast conditions and roads where cyclists move between shade and bright sunlight.

Night Flash

Night Flash uses a lower-output pulse suitable for darkness. It provides recognisable movement without producing the same intense output required to compete with daylight.

Power Steady

Power Steady provides a continuous higher-output light intended for reduced-light environments where a stronger steady signal is appropriate.

Steady

Steady mode provides a lower-output continuous light designed to support extended operation.

Start and Stop Technology

The Vision modules detect movement and inactivity. After approximately 30 seconds without movement, the lights enter standby to conserve battery power. They reactivate when pedalling resumes.

This is useful during café stops, traffic delays and indoor storage because riders do not need to operate each light repeatedly during a normal journey.

The automatic function should not replace a pre-ride battery check. Riders should confirm that both lights activate and display sufficient charge before leaving.

Removable Light Modules

Each Vision module can be clipped out of the pedal without tools. The pedals remain fully functional when the lights are removed.

This allows riders to:

  • Remove the lights for daylight racing
  • Charge them away from the bike
  • Reduce weight when lighting is unnecessary
  • Protect the modules during washing
  • Use the pedals as conventional Keo Blade Ceramic road pedals
  • Replace a light module without replacing the entire pedal system

The removable design is one of the product’s strongest practical features. Riders gain visibility equipment without permanently changing the performance or operation of the pedal.

Shoe Compatibility

The LOOK Keo Blade Carbon Ceramic Vision Pedals are designed for road cycling shoes with a three-bolt cleat mounting pattern.

Correct setup should consider:

  • Cleat fore-aft position
  • Cleat rotation
  • Lateral placement
  • Natural foot angle
  • Heel clearance
  • Knee tracking
  • Saddle height
  • Previous injuries
  • Shoe sole shape
  • Insole and arch support

Changing from another pedal system can alter stack height, cleat reference points and effective leg extension. Professional cleat fitting is recommended rather than transferring the old cleat position by eye.

Who it is best suited for and where it is best suited

The LOOK Keo Blade Carbon Ceramic Vision Pedals are ideal for performance-focused road cyclists who regularly train before sunrise, ride through variable light or return home near dusk but do not want to compromise on pedal weight, stiffness or race-ready support.

Product Care & Warranty Info

Pedal Installation

  • The right and left pedals use different thread directions.
  • The right pedal uses a conventional right-hand thread. The left pedal uses a reverse thread.
  • Begin installation by hand to prevent cross-threading the crank. If the axle does not turn smoothly, stop and check the alignment.
  • Apply suitable bicycle grease or approved anti-seize compound to clean pedal threads. Tighten both pedals to LOOK’s specified torque using the correct tool.

Cleat Installation

Install only compatible LOOK Keo cleats using the supplied bolts and washers.

Cleat setup should account for:

  • Fore-aft position
  • Lateral placement
  • Cleat rotation
  • Natural foot angle
  • Knee tracking
  • Heel clearance
  • Saddle height
  • Previous injury or discomfort

Check the cleat bolts after the first few rides. New cleats may settle slightly against the shoe sole.

Light Charging and Storage

Remove the Vision modules before charging.

Use the supplied or a compatible USB-C charging cable. Allow approximately two hours for a full charge.

Before every low-light ride:

  • Confirm that both modules illuminate.
  • Check the selected lighting mode.
  • Verify that each unit is securely clipped into place.
  • Check the battery indicators.
  • Carry a compliant primary rear light.

Do not store the modules completely discharged for extended periods. Recharge them periodically during long periods without use.

Cleaning

Remove the Vision lights before washing the bicycle.

Clean the pedals with:

  • A soft brush
  • Mild bicycle cleaner
  • Low-pressure water
  • A clean drying cloth

Avoid:

  • Pressure washing the axle seals
  • Aggressive solvents
  • Degreaser entering the bearings
  • Thick lubricant around the retention mechanism
  • Abrasive tools on the carbon bodies
  • Submerging the pedals for cleaning
  • Charging wet light modules

Allow the modules and charging ports to dry fully before connecting them to power.

Routine Inspection

Inspect the pedals regularly for:

  • Cracks or impact damage
  • Secure pedal threads
  • Smooth axle rotation
  • Excessive lateral movement
  • Blade damage
  • Worn contact surfaces
  • Loose cleat bolts
  • Excessive cleat wear
  • Secure light attachment
  • Damaged charging ports
  • Reduced battery performance

Replace excessively worn cleats. Damaged cleats can produce inconsistent engagement, excessive movement or unexpected release.

Ceramic Bearing Care

Ceramic bearings still require clean seals, correct adjustment and appropriate lubrication.

Arrange professional servicing if:

  • A pedal develops lateral play.
  • Rotation becomes rough.
  • Clicking or grinding is present.
  • Water contamination is suspected.
  • The axle may be bent.
  • A significant pedal strike has occurred.

Warranty

LOOK provides a two-year legal warranty against eligible manufacturing and conformity defects, subject to proof of purchase

Industry & Rider Feedback. A few Comparison Options

Road.cc published an independent review of the LOOK Keo Blade Ceramic Vision Pedals on 9 April 2026.

  • The review described the integrated lighting as a valuable addition for winter, night and low-light road cycling. The lights were considered highly visible, lightweight and simple to remove when unnecessary.
  • The reviewer also praised the underlying Keo Blade Ceramic platform, noting the secure engagement, smooth pedal rotation and improved sealing. The broad contact surface was considered a meaningful improvement because it provided stable support without adding excessive bulk.
  • Not every lighting mode received equal praise. The review found the steady modes particularly effective, while the flashing patterns were considered less successful in certain situations. Even with that reservation, the overall assessment was positive because the lights added meaningful visibility without undermining pedal performance.
  • The complete system returned a measured weight of approximately 264g during testing, slightly below the stated 270g figure. Small weight differences can arise from production tolerances and the precise items included during measurement.

The main rider considerations are price, fixed Blade tension and cleat compatibility. Changing release tension requires replacing the carbon Blades rather than turning an adjustment screw. Cyclists moving from Shimano, Speedplay or Time must also install and correctly position LOOK Keo cleats.
