Wax-Based Lubrication

SILCA Super Secret 2.0 Chain Lube uses an air-drying wax emulsion rather than relying on a conventional oil base. The liquid carries wax and friction-reducing additives into the chain before curing into a dry protective film around the pins, rollers and inner plates.

This dry finish attracts substantially less road grit and dust than a sticky oil-based chain lubricant. Keeping abrasive contamination away from the chain’s internal contact surfaces can help reduce wear across premium bicycle chains, cassettes, chainrings and derailleur pulley wheels.

Wax-Based Carrier Technology

One of the most important changes from the original Super Secret formula is the move away from a water-based emulsifier. Prolonged exposure to rain could reactivate the original carrier and allow the lubrication layer to wear away more quickly.

SILCA Super Secret 2.0 Chain Lube uses a wax-based emulsifier designed to adhere more effectively to the chain and resist displacement in rain or mud. SILCA claims this provides approximately two to three times better wet-weather durability than the previous formula.

Smaller Wax Particles

The revised formula uses smaller wax particles, allowing SILCA to increase the concentration of solid lubricant within the bottle. These particles are designed to penetrate the narrow spaces between the chain’s pins, rollers and plates, where friction and wear occur.

Effective penetration is particularly important on modern 11-speed, 12-speed and 13-speed chains because their internal tolerances are extremely tight. Applying lubricant only to the outside of the chain provides little benefit if it cannot reach the moving contact surfaces.

Tungsten Disulfide Friction Modifiers

Tungsten disulfide is a low-friction solid lubricant capable of operating under concentrated mechanical loads. SILCA uses this material within the wax coating to help reduce metal-on-metal resistance inside the chain.

The updated formula incorporates a stacked fullerene platelet structure. These microscopic friction modifiers are designed to cover the metal surface and fill fine surface irregularities, creating a low-friction interface between moving chain components.

Clean Drivetrain Performance

Traditional oil-based lubricants remain wet and can attract dust, sand and metallic wear particles. This mixture forms the familiar black abrasive residue found on neglected chains and cassettes.

SILCA Super Secret 2.0 Chain Lube cures into a dry coating that gradually sheds contamination as the wax wears away. When correctly applied, the chain should remain considerably cleaner to handle and require less intensive degreasing than an oil-lubricated drivetrain.

Hot-Wax Compatibility

SILCA Super Secret 2.0 Chain Lube can be used independently or as a maintenance top-up for a chain treated with immersive hot wax. This allows riders to extend the period between complete waxing sessions without removing the chain from the bicycle.

It is particularly well matched to SILCA Secret Chain Blend because both products form part of the same wax-based maintenance system. Riders can begin with an immersive wax treatment for maximum coverage, then use SILCA Super Secret 2.0 Chain Lube for convenient maintenance.

Bottle size: 100ml

Lubricant format: Precision drip application

Compatible chain types:

Single-speed chains
Multi-speed derailleur chains
Road bike chains
Gravel and cyclocross chains
Mountain bike chains
Triathlon and time-trial chains
Mechanical and electronic drivetrain chains
Performance e-bike chains
Previously hot-waxed bicycle chains

Compatible drivetrain brands include:

Shimano
SRAM
Campagnolo
KMC
Connex
YBN
Other bicycle chains that permit wax-based lubrication

The chain must be clean, fully degreased and completely dry before the first application. Factory grease, conventional wet lube and residual drivetrain oil can prevent the wax from adhering correctly.

SILCA Super Secret 2.0 Chain Lube is ideal for cyclists who want the cleanliness and efficiency of a waxed bicycle chain without regularly removing the chain for an immersive hot-wax treatment.

Initial Chain Preparation

Remove the chain where practical for thorough preparation.
Completely strip factory grease, conventional chain oil and accumulated contamination.
Clean the cassette, chainrings and derailleur pulley wheels so residual oil is not transferred back onto the chain.
Rinse away any approved cleaning solution according to its instructions.
Ensure the chain is completely dry before applying the wax.
Do not mix SILCA Super Secret 2.0 Chain Lube with an existing oil-based lubricant.

Application

Shake the bottle thoroughly before every application.
Apply one controlled drop to each chain roller.
Rotate the cranks slowly to help the liquid enter the chain.
Avoid flooding the cassette, chainrings or braking surfaces.
Allow at least four hours for curing, with overnight curing preferred.
Apply after a ride rather than immediately before the next ride.
Expect a brief break-in period as excess surface wax leaves the drivetrain.

Routine Maintenance

Wipe loose dirt and expelled wax from the chain using a clean, dry cloth.
Reapply after approximately 350 to 400km or when the chain begins to sound dry.
Reapply sooner after heavy rain, mud, creek crossings or intensive washing.
Avoid routine degreasing once the chain is operating as a clean wax system.
Do not add conventional oil over the wax coating.
If the chain becomes contaminated with oil, complete chain preparation may need to be repeated.

Storage

Store the bottle upright with the cap securely closed.
Keep it away from direct sunlight and excessive heat.
Do not allow the product to freeze.
Shake thoroughly after extended storage.
Keep it away from children and pets.
Follow the handling and safety instructions printed on the current packaging.

Warranty Information

SILCA provides a limited warranty against manufacturing defects. Chain lubricant is a consumable product, so normal depletion, contamination, drying or reduced performance caused by incorrect chain preparation will not usually be considered a manufacturing fault.

Roadman Cycling reviewed SILCA Super Secret 2.0 Chain Lube on 30 July 2026 and recommended it as an effective middle ground between conventional oil lubrication and full immersive chain waxing.

The review praised the dry, low-grime finish, tungsten-disulfide wax formula and ability to operate either as a standalone lubricant or as a top-up for a previously hot-waxed chain. The reviewer considered it particularly suitable for road cyclists who want a visibly cleaner drivetrain and lower-friction wax performance without setting up a dedicated wax bath.

The main limitations related to preparation and curing time. The chain must be thoroughly stripped of factory grease or old oil before the first application, and the coating needs time to cure before riding. Riders who need to lubricate a dirty chain immediately before leaving may find a conventional wet lubricant more forgiving, although it will not offer the same clean wax finish.

Bikerumor Technical Assessment

Bikerumor reported on the release of SILCA Super Secret 2.0 Chain Lube on 28 July 2026. Its technical overview highlighted SILCA’s claims of a 350 to 400km service interval, approximately 20 percent greater longevity and a 0.6 to 0.8-watt efficiency improvement over the original version.

The report also noted the move to smaller wax particles, updated fullerene friction modifiers and improved wet-weather adhesion. These were presented as manufacturer performance claims rather than the results of a completed long-term independent laboratory comparison.
