Carbon crankarm construction

The SRAM Force 1 AXS E1 Crankset uses lightweight carbon crankarms designed to provide the stiffness required for racing, climbing and high-output acceleration. Carbon allows material to be concentrated around heavily loaded areas while reducing mass elsewhere.

The result is a responsive crankset that transfers power efficiently without moving into the significantly higher price category of SRAM RED. Its black carbon finish also complements modern aero road bikes, triathlon bikes and premium all-road builds.

Aero direct-mount chainring

The solid-profile chainring covers more of the crank and spider area than a conventional open-spider design. This creates a smoother surface for airflow and gives the crankset a clean, integrated appearance.

The aerodynamic benefit is most relevant during:

Time trials
Triathlons
Criterium racing
Solo breakaways
Fast road racing
High-speed training
Flat or rolling courses

The riding position, clothing, helmet and wheel system will produce larger aerodynamic differences, but the aero chainring is a logical finishing component on a speed-focused bicycle.

X-SYNC chain retention

The X-SYNC chainring uses alternating wide and narrow teeth that match the inner and outer links of the chain. Tall, square-edged teeth engage the chain early, while shaped recesses help clear dirt from around the chain rollers.

This improves:

Chain retention
High-cadence stability
Control over rough roads
Reliability without a front derailleur
Chain engagement during hard acceleration
Performance on maintained unsealed sectors

X-SYNC does not replace the need for a compatible clutched rear derailleur, correctly sized chain and well-maintained drivetrain.

Simplified 1x drivetrain

Removing the front derailleur, second chainring and front-shift function reduces complexity and creates a cleaner bicycle.

Key 1x benefits include:

No front-derailleur adjustment
No front-shift timing
Reduced number of drivetrain components
Simpler control operation
Strong chain retention
Cleaner frame appearance
Easier drivetrain cleaning
Potentially lower overall system weight

The main compromise is gearing. A 1x drivetrain generally has larger steps between some rear gears and may not provide the same combination of climbing range and high-speed gearing as a carefully selected 2x system.

SRAM DUB technology

The 28.99mm DUB spindle is designed to balance stiffness, bearing size, sealing and compatibility. Different SRAM Road DUB bottom brackets allow the crankset to fit many common road-bike frames.

Compatible frame standards may include approved:

BSA threaded shells
BB86 press-fit shells
T47 shells
PF30 shells
BB30 shells with the appropriate DUB bottom bracket

The bottom bracket must match the bicycle’s frame shell. DUB does not mean that one bottom bracket fits every frame.

Power-meter upgrade path

A compatible SRAM AXS Aero Power Meter Kit can replace the non-power chainring assembly. This provides a clean route to power measurement while retaining the existing carbon crankarms and crank length.

Depending on the selected power-meter kit, supported data can include:

Total power
Cadence
Left-to-right balance
ANT+ transmission
Bluetooth transmission
SRAM AXS app connectivity
Firmware updates
Training and race analysis

Available crank lengths

160mm
165mm
170mm
172.5mm
175mm

160mm crankarms

The 160mm option can suit smaller riders, cyclists with limited hip mobility and triathletes seeking a more open hip angle in an aerodynamic position. It also provides increased pedal clearance through corners.

165mm crankarms

The 165mm version is increasingly popular for road racing and triathlon. It can reduce peak hip and knee flexion while supporting a smooth, higher-cadence pedalling style.

170mm crankarms

The 170mm option provides a versatile middle ground for riders who want familiar road-bike proportions with slightly greater pedal clearance than longer crankarms.

172.5mm crankarms

The 172.5mm version remains a widely used road standard and suits riders whose established fit, leg proportions and cadence work well with a moderately long crank.

175mm crankarms

The 175mm option suits riders whose biomechanics and established position favour a longer pedal radius. Height alone should not determine crank length.

Bike-fit considerations

Changing crank length alters the top and bottom positions of the pedal stroke. Moving to shorter crankarms usually requires a corresponding saddle-height adjustment.

For example, changing from 172.5mm to 165mm crankarms may require an initial saddle-height increase of approximately 7.5mm.

The following may also require reassessment:

Saddle setback
Cleat position
Handlebar reach
Handlebar drop
Hip angle
Knee movement
Aerodynamic position
Cadence preference
Chain length

Professional bike fitting is recommended when changing crank length to improve comfort, cornering clearance or aerodynamics.

Chainring selection

44T

The 44T option provides the lowest gearing and is the most versatile choice for rolling all-road routes, cyclocross and fast gravel. It also suits riders wanting more manageable climbing gears.

46T

The 46T chainring balances climbing performance with high-speed capability. It is a useful choice for rolling road courses, cyclocross and mixed-surface racing.

50T

The 50T Aero chainring is the most speed-focused option. It is particularly well suited to time trials, triathlons and flat road races.

Gearing considerations

The effective climbing range depends on the selected cassette. Before choosing a chainring, riders should calculate the smallest available gear and consider local terrain.

A 50T chainring can be excellent on flat roads but demanding on sustained climbs unless paired with a suitably wide cassette. Riders completing alpine events or steep gravel routes may be better served by a 44T or 46T configuration.

The SRAM Force 1 AXS E1 Crankset is best suited to triathletes, time-trial riders, criterium racers and performance cyclists who want the simplicity and clean appearance of a 1x drivetrain.

Carbon crankarm inspection

Inspect the crankarms regularly for:

Cracks
Deep scratches
Gouges
Raised carbon fibres
Crushing damage
Pedal-thread damage
Heavy heel rub
Spindle-area damage
Significant impact marks

Stop riding if structural damage is suspected. Damaged carbon crankarms should be inspected professionally rather than repaired with general-purpose resin, glue or cosmetic filler.

Chain and chainring maintenance

Clean and lubricate the chain regularly.
Use lubricant suitable for local weather and riding conditions.
Remove excess lubricant to minimise abrasive dust buildup.
Measure chain wear with a compatible chain checker.
Replace a worn chain before it damages the chainring and cassette.
Inspect the X-SYNC teeth after a dropped chain or impact.
Check for broken, bent, hooked or unusually worn teeth.
Maintain the correct chain length.
Use approved SRAM drivetrain components.

Bottom-bracket maintenance

Check for bearing play, roughness and creaking.
Confirm that crank preload remains correctly adjusted.
Inspect the spindle and seals during scheduled servicing.
Replace worn or contaminated bearings promptly.
Avoid pressure washing around the bottom bracket.
Have persistent drivetrain noise diagnosed by an experienced bicycle mechanic.

Power-meter upgrade care

If a power meter is added later:

Confirm crankarm and chainring compatibility.
Pair the sensor with the SRAM AXS app.
Install current firmware.
Check battery condition.
Perform a zero-offset calibration.
Enter the correct crank length in the cycling computer.
Inspect the battery-cover seal during battery replacement.

Professional installation

A professional crankset installation should include:

Frame compatibility inspection
Bottom-bracket identification
Bottom-bracket shell inspection
Correct SRAM Road DUB bottom-bracket installation
Spacer selection
Crank installation
Bearing preload adjustment
Chainline verification
Chain sizing
Rear-derailleur setup
Chain-retention check
Test ride under load
Pedal installation to the specified torque
