Key Features & Technical Specifications

The Elitewheels Drive G50 SS is a 700C carbon gravel wheelset engineered around the wider tyres now used for gravel racing, all-road riding and fast adventure cycling. Its 30mm internal rim width provides a stable platform for 40-60C tyres, while the 50mm-deep profile is designed to carry speed on open roads and fast gravel sectors.

The SS designation identifies the steel-spoke version of the Drive G50. It uses Alpina Ultralite Aero spokes rather than the carbon spokes fitted to the lighter and more expensive Drive G50 CS.

Notable Tech, Materials & Construction

Wide carbon rim platform

The Drive G50 SS uses a 30mm internal and 37mm external rim profile developed for modern high-volume gravel tyres. The wider tyre bed supports the tyre casing more effectively than a narrow road-style rim, reducing the tendency for a large tyre to fold or feel vague during hard cornering.

Better casing support can also allow suitably selected tubeless tyres to operate at lower pressures. This improves mechanical grip, comfort and control on washboard gravel, loose corners and rocky tracks.

The correct pressure still depends on rider weight, tyre construction, terrain and whether inserts are fitted. Riders should always observe the pressure limits printed on the rim and tyre.

Hooked tubeless-ready construction

A hooked bead provides positive mechanical retention for compatible clincher and tubeless tyres. This makes the wheelset suitable for riders who want the efficiency and puncture-sealing benefits of tubeless gravel tyres without moving to a hookless rim interface.

Installed rim tape and valves simplify the initial tubeless conversion. Sealant, tyres and any required valve accessories may need to be purchased separately.

50mm aerodynamic profile

The 50mm rim provides a deeper aerodynamic profile than conventional shallow gravel wheels. The greatest benefit is likely to appear on fast gravel sectors, sealed-road transitions and exposed race courses where the rider can maintain higher speeds.

The wide 37mm external profile should create a more natural transition to high-volume tyres than a narrow road rim. However, the aerodynamic result will vary with the fitted tyre, pressure, tread and airflow conditions.

Australian riders frequently encountering strong crosswinds should consider the handling implications of a 50mm front rim. Skilled riders will generally appreciate the additional speed potential, but a shallower wheel may feel calmer on highly exposed routes.

Alpina Ultralite Aero steel spokes

The steel spokes are a key point of difference. Carbon spokes can reduce weight and increase directness, but high-quality steel spokes provide a familiar combination of fatigue resistance, vibration damping and serviceability.

Alpina Ultralite Aero spokes have a flattened profile intended to reduce aerodynamic drag while maintaining the practical advantages of steel. A competent wheel builder is also more likely to be able to source or adapt a conventional steel-spoke repair during travel than replace a proprietary carbon spoke.

Optimised 2:1 spoke arrangement

The front wheel uses 21 spokes, while the rear uses 24. The 2:1 arrangement places additional spokes on the more heavily loaded side of each wheel, helping balance spoke tension across the asymmetric forces created by disc brakes and the rear drivetrain.

More balanced tension can improve lateral stiffness, power transfer and long-term wheel stability without requiring an excessive total spoke count.

Sapim Secure Lock nipples

Sapim Secure Lock nipples help resist loosening as the wheel experiences repeated vibration and impact. They are valuable on gravel wheels, where spoke tension can be challenged by corrugations, potholes and high-frequency surface vibration.

Elitewheels offers an optional brass nipple upgrade. Brass nipples normally add a small amount of weight but may offer better long-term corrosion resistance and easier servicing in wet or coastal environments than lightweight alloy nipples.

One-piece titanium freehub

The freehub body and 60-tooth ratchet are machined as an integrated titanium component. Titanium offers high strength, excellent corrosion resistance and better resistance to cassette marking than softer aluminium freehub bodies.

This construction is particularly relevant for Australian gravel riding, where fine dust, mud, creek crossings and long service intervals can place extra demands on rear-hub components.

Rapid six-degree engagement

A 60-tooth ratchet provides a six-degree engagement angle. This limits the amount of crank rotation before the freehub engages, creating a responsive feel when accelerating out of corners, restarting on a steep climb or applying power through uneven terrain.

Fast engagement is useful on technical gravel, although riders should still use smooth pedal input when riding over loose or low-traction surfaces.

TPI steel bearings

TPI steel bearings prioritise proven performance, durability and practical replacement rather than the reduced seal drag sometimes associated with ceramic bearings. Correct bearing preload and regular inspection remain important, particularly after wet, muddy or high-pressure washing.

Testing and validation

Elitewheels states that the Drive G50 SS undergoes more than 20 laboratory tests covering stiffness, durability and longevity. The wheelset has also passed the UCI vertical impact test and is approved for competition use.

Who it is best suited for and where it is best suited

The Elitewheels Drive G50 SS is best suited to gravel racers, fast adventure riders and all-road cyclists who want the speed and appearance of deep carbon wheels without sacrificing the serviceability and more forgiving feel of steel spokes.

Product Care & Warranty Info

Wheel care

• Clean the rims, hubs and spokes using water, mild bicycle cleaner and a soft brush
• Avoid directing high-pressure water at hub bearings, freehub seals, spoke holes or tubeless valves
• Inspect the carbon rims after impacts, crashes or severe pothole strikes
• Stop riding if cracks, soft areas, delamination or unexplained deformation are found
• Check spoke tension and wheel trueness periodically, especially after the first several rides
• Have spoke adjustments performed by an experienced carbon-wheel technician
• Inspect Center Lock lockrings regularly and tighten them to the rotor manufacturer’s specification
• Use tyres within the manufacturer’s approved 40-60C range
• Follow the lower of the rim and tyre maximum-pressure limits
• Renew tubeless sealant at intervals appropriate to the climate and sealant manufacturer
• Inspect rim tape whenever a tyre is removed or unexplained pressure loss occurs
• Replace damaged or lifting tape before reinstalling a tubeless tyre
• Clean and lubricate the freehub according to Elitewheels service instructions
• Do not pack the ratchet mechanism with an unsuitable heavy grease
• Check hub bearings after wet rides, creek crossings or prolonged exposure to fine dust
• Keep the total system load within the published 120kg limit

Hot storage conditions can accelerate tubeless sealant drying. Riders in warm regions should check sealant more frequently than riders in cooler climates.

Industry & Rider Feedback. A few Comparison Options

Cyclists Hub updated its broader Elitewheels Drive review on 18 August 2025 after approximately 3,000km of testing on the road-focused Drive wheelset. Reviewer Petr Minarik praised that model’s lively acceleration, low rotational mass and high lateral stiffness, while noting that its firm construction did not preserve momentum like a heavier wheel and that bearing longevity deserved consideration.

Elitewheels Drive G50 SS versus Elitewheels Drive G50 CS

Both wheelsets use 50mm-deep carbon rims with a 30mm internal width, a 37mm external width and compatibility with 40-60C tyres. Both also use a hooked tubeless-ready bead, Center Lock rotor mounting and a titanium 60-tooth freehub.

The Drive G50 CS uses 3.3mm carbon spokes and has a claimed weight of 1380 ±30g, approximately 50g lighter than the steel-spoke version. It should provide a stiffer and more immediate ride under hard acceleration.

The Drive G50 SS costs less, offers greater vibration damping and is likely to be easier to repair. It is the stronger all-round choice for riders who prioritise comfort, serviceability and value. The Drive G50 CS is better suited to racers seeking maximum stiffness and the lowest available weight from this rim platform.

Elitewheels Drive G50 SS versus Zipp 303 XPLR S

The Zipp 303 XPLR S is built around an especially wide gravel-specific rim and is intended to improve aerodynamics with large tyres. It is an attractive option for riders using SRAM components or wanting a wheelset supported by a large international dealer network.

The Elitewheels Drive G50 SS offers a hooked bead, steel spokes and a deeper 50mm profile. Its hooked construction may appeal to riders who want broader conventional tyre compatibility, while the steel spokes offer a familiar servicing format. The Zipp alternative may provide stronger local dealer support, but tyre compatibility and hookless pressure requirements need careful attention.

Elitewheels Drive G50 SS versus DT Swiss GRC 1400 DICUT

The DT Swiss GRC 1400 DICUT is a premium gravel wheelset with an established hub platform, broad workshop recognition and strong replacement-parts support. It is a logical choice for riders who prioritise a mature service network and proven hub availability.

The Elitewheels Drive G50 SS provides wider 30mm internal rims, rapid six-degree engagement and competitive weight at a potentially lower purchase price. DT Swiss has the advantage in established Australian support, while the Elitewheels option delivers an aggressive specification and wider tyre platform for the money.

Elitewheels Drive G50 SS versus Reserve 40|44 GR

The Reserve 40|44 GR uses differentiated front and rear rim profiles to balance aerodynamic efficiency, stiffness and control. It is a premium alternative supported by a strong warranty reputation and established distribution.

The Elitewheels Drive G50 SS uses matching 50mm rims and is optimised for wider 40-60C tyres. Its deeper profile may appeal to riders targeting fast gravel races and substantial road kilometres. Reserve offers a more established premium support proposition, while Elitewheels provides the wider rim bed, faster published engagement and stronger specification-to-price ratio.
