The SRAM Force AXS E1 Power Meter Crankset measures torque at the spider, where power from both crankarms enters the chainring assembly. Combining measured torque with cadence enables the system to calculate total rider power in watts.

Spider-based measurement captures power from both legs and reports a calculated left-to-right balance. This makes it more informative than a basic left-crank power meter that measures one leg and doubles the result.

Useful training metrics include:

Current power
Average power
Maximum power
Cadence
Left-to-right power balance
Normalised or weighted power when calculated by the cycling computer
Training intensity
Interval consistency
Race pacing
Training load

The balance measurement is useful for tracking trends, but it should not be treated as a clinical diagnosis of pedalling technique or leg function.

Active temperature compensation

The power meter is designed to compensate for temperature changes during a ride. This is particularly useful in Australia, where an early-morning session may begin in cool conditions and finish in considerably warmer temperatures.

Temperature compensation helps limit measurement drift, supporting more consistent training data across different seasons and riding environments.

Thread-mount chainring system

The E1 crankset introduces replaceable thread-mount chainrings. The one-piece double chainring assembly threads onto the power-meter spider, creating a broad and rigid contact area.

DUB spindle technology

The SRAM DUB system uses a 28.99mm spindle designed to balance stiffness, bearing size, sealing and compatibility.

A frame-specific SRAM Road DUB bottom bracket allows the crankset to fit many common bottom-bracket shells, including approved BSA, BB86, PF30 and T47 configurations.

DUB does not mean that one bottom bracket fits every frame. The selected bottom bracket must match both the crankset and the bicycle’s shell standard.

AXS connectivity

The power meter connects to compatible cycling computers using ANT+ or Bluetooth Low Energy. It can be monitored and updated through the SRAM AXS app.

Crank length selection

160mm

The 160mm option suits smaller riders, cyclists with restricted hip mobility and triathletes seeking a more open hip angle. It also provides increased pedal clearance through corners.

165mm

The 165mm length is increasingly popular among road racers and triathletes. It can reduce peak knee and hip flexion while supporting a smooth, high-cadence pedalling style.

170mm

The 170mm version provides a versatile middle ground and suits a broad range of road riders. It delivers a familiar feel while offering slightly more cornering clearance than longer crankarms.

172.5mm

The 172.5mm option remains a widely used road standard. It suits riders whose existing position, leg proportions and cadence preferences work well with a moderately long crank.

175mm

The 175mm version suits riders whose biomechanics and established fit favour a longer pedal radius. Rider height alone should not determine crank length.

Bike-fit considerations

Changing crank length affects the position of the pedal at the top and bottom of the stroke. Moving to a shorter crank normally requires the saddle to be raised by approximately the same amount as the reduction in crank length.

Chainring selection

46/33T

The 46/33T combination provides the easiest climbing gears. It is well suited to steep Australian roads, alpine events, gran fondos and cyclists who prefer a higher cadence.

With a compatible 10-36T cassette, the 33-tooth inner ring delivers a climbing gear below a one-to-one ratio.

48/35T

The 48/35T option provides the most versatile balance for mixed terrain. It suits club racing, rolling country roads, endurance events and fast bunch rides.

50/37T

The 50/37T combination is intended for stronger riders, criterium racing, flatter routes and consistently fast road riding. The 10-tooth smallest sprocket provides substantial top-end gearing.

Its temperature-compensated data suits training sessions that begin in cool pre-dawn conditions and finish in summer heat, while the stiff thread-mount chainrings provide crisp shifts across rolling roads and fast bunch rides.

Power-meter maintenance

Replace the CR2032 battery when a low-charge warning appears.
Use a fresh battery from a recognised manufacturer.
Clean the battery compartment before installing the new battery.
Inspect the battery-cover seal for contamination or damage.
Confirm that the cover is secured correctly.
Pair the crankset with the SRAM AXS app after installation.
Install firmware updates when recommended.
Perform a manual zero calibration after installation or battery replacement.
Confirm the correct crank length in the connected cycling computer.
Calibrate before important testing or racing where practical.

Carbon crankarm inspection

Inspect both crankarms regularly for:

Cracks
Deep scratches
Gouges
Raised carbon fibres
Crushing damage
Pedal-thread damage
Spindle-area damage
Significant heel rub
Major impact marks

Stop riding if structural damage is suspected. Damaged carbon crankarms should be professionally assessed rather than repaired with general-purpose adhesive or cosmetic filler.

Chain and chainring maintenance

Check chain wear regularly using a compatible gauge.
Replace a worn chain before it accelerates chainring and cassette wear.
Use a compatible SRAM Road Flattop chain.
Inspect the teeth after a dropped chain or impact.
Check for hooking, chips or deformation.
Confirm accurate front-derailleur alignment.
Use the dedicated SRAM thread-mount tool when replacing chainrings.
Follow the specified installation direction and tightening procedure.

Bottom-bracket care

Check for bearing roughness, movement and creaking.
Avoid pressure washing around the bearing seals.
Maintain the correct crank preload.
Inspect the DUB spindle during scheduled servicing.
Replace worn or contaminated bearings promptly.
Have recurring noise professionally diagnosed.

Professional installation

A professional installation should include:

Frame and bottom-bracket compatibility check
Bottom-bracket shell inspection
Correct SRAM Road DUB bottom-bracket installation
Spacer selection
Crank installation
Bearing preload adjustment
Chainline verification
Chain sizing
Front-derailleur setup
Power-meter pairing
Firmware check
Zero-offset calibration
Test shifting under load

Warranty

SRAM generally provides the original owner with a two-year limited warranty against qualifying defects in materials or workmanship.

Professional testing of SRAM’s Quarq spider-based power meters has consistently found the platform well suited to structured training and race pacing, with stable ANT+ connectivity, useful left-to-right balance reporting and dependable temperature compensation.

Rider and community sentiment

Positive rider sentiment commonly focuses on the thread-mount chainring system and the ability to retain the power-meter spider when changing gearing or replacing worn rings.

The main concerns are the premium initial price and the need for a dedicated tool when changing thread-mount chainrings. Riders who regularly move a power meter between bicycles may prefer power-meter pedals, while cyclists with a dedicated race or training bike generally value the clean permanent installation.
