Single-Speed Chain Architecture

The YBN S410 Single Speed Chain uses a straightforward 1/2 x 1/8-inch design made specifically for drivetrains with one front chainring and one rear sprocket. Unlike a derailleur chain, it does not need narrow plates or complex lateral-shifting profiles.

This simpler construction delivers several practical benefits:

Strong plate structure
Good resistance to direct pedalling loads
Straightforward installation
Easy cleaning
Broad compatibility with traditional single-speed parts
Lower replacement cost than many multi-speed chains

1/8-Inch Internal Width

The 1/8-inch internal width suits the wider teeth commonly found on BMX, track, cruiser and traditional single-speed sprockets. This wider interface can provide secure chain engagement when correctly matched to the chainring and rear cog.

Using the correct internal width matters. A chain that is too narrow may not sit fully over the sprocket teeth, while an unnecessarily wide chain can create excess lateral movement and drivetrain noise.

1000kgf Tensile Strength

The quoted 1000kgf tensile strength indicates that the YBN S410 Single Speed Chain is designed to withstand the direct chain loads typical of single-speed drivetrains.

This is particularly relevant for:

Standing starts
BMX acceleration
Fixed-gear riding
Short, steep climbs
Heavier utility bikes
Riders applying high torque in one gear

Tensile strength does not make the chain immune to fatigue, corrosion, poor installation or wear. Chain life remains dependent on lubrication, alignment, tension and drivetrain condition.

Steel Construction

The chain uses steel for the plates, rollers and pins, providing a practical balance of strength, wear resistance and price. Steel is the standard material for most bicycle chains because it tolerates repeated articulation and direct tooth contact effectively.

The brown finish gives the chain a simple workshop-style appearance rather than the highly polished look of nickel-plated or decorative chains.

Chain Size:

1/2 x 1/8 inch
110 links

Metric Measurements:

Chain pitch: 12.7mm
Nominal internal width: approximately 3.18mm
Supplied nominal pitch length: approximately 1397mm
Supplied nominal pitch length in imperial measurement: 55 inches

The calculated pitch length is based on 110 half-inch pitches. The chain’s physical end-to-end measurement can differ slightly depending on how it is positioned and whether the connecting link is included in the link count.

Fit Checklist Before Purchase:

Confirm the bike is single speed or uses a compatible internal-gear hub.
Check that the chainring is designed for a 1/8-inch chain.
Check that the rear sprocket is designed for a 1/8-inch chain.
Count the links on the current chain or size the replacement directly on the bike.
Inspect the chainring and rear sprocket for hooked or damaged teeth.
Check chainline before final installation.
Confirm that the frame provides a method of adjusting chain tension.
Check whether a chain tensioner is required on a vertical-dropout frame.
Confirm that the supplied connecting link is present and compatible.

The YBN S410 Single Speed Chain is best suited to riders maintaining a practical BMX, fixie, cruiser, children’s bike or everyday single-speed bicycle who want a strong replacement without paying for race-level materials or decorative finishing.

Independent chain-testing specialists more commonly test premium multi-speed YBN chains rather than the basic S410. Those results cannot be applied directly to this model because plate design, coatings, pin treatment and intended use differ. The YBN S410 Single Speed Chain should therefore be assessed as a robust value replacement rather than a low-friction racing chain.
