Compatibility requirements

This is a Wide-chainline crankset designed primarily for modern gravel frames with additional tyre and chainstay clearance. SRAM recommends the Wide configuration for compatible XPLR bicycles with chainstays measuring 415mm or longer.

Compatible XPLR bicycles with chainstays measuring 414mm or shorter may instead require a standard 45mm road-chainline crankset. Frame geometry and drivetrain compatibility should be checked before ordering.

Hollow carbon crankarms

The SRAM RED XPLR E1 Wide Crankset uses hollow carbon crankarms engineered to deliver a high stiffness-to-weight ratio. The carbon structure places reinforcing fibres around heavily loaded areas while removing unnecessary material from lower-stress zones.

This construction produces a direct response during steep climbing, standing acceleration and hard race efforts. It also keeps the crankset light enough for top-level gravel race bikes without relying on a narrow or road-only spindle arrangement.

The hollow carbon arms should be inspected after significant pedal strikes, crashes or transport impacts. Deep gouges, cracked surfaces or exposed fibres require professional assessment.

Wide DUB architecture

The Wide DUB spindle positions the chainring further outboard than a standard SRAM road crankset, producing a 47.5mm chainline.

The wider position can provide:

DUB does not mean one bottom bracket fits every bicycle. The bottom bracket must match both the crankset spindle and the frame’s bottom-bracket shell.

X-SYNC chain retention

The direct-mount chainring uses SRAM X-SYNC narrow-wide tooth profiling. Alternating wide and narrow teeth correspond with the chain’s inner and outer links, helping the chain remain engaged without a front derailleur.

Tall, square-edged teeth engage the chain early, while mud-clearing recesses help prevent dirt from accumulating around the chain rollers.

167.5mm and 170mm crankarms

These intermediate sizes provide a versatile balance between contemporary short-crank fitting and traditional road dimensions. The 167.5mm option offers a useful fit step between 165mm and 170mm.

172.5mm and 175mm crankarms
