• Minor aluminum galling
• Cross-threading that's not severe
• Surface damage only

Moderate Damage:

• Significant thread deformation
• Partially stripped threads
• Damaged threads over portion of length
• Aluminium insert still intact but threads compromised

Severe Damage:

• Completely stripped threads
• Damaged threads over full length
• Aluminium insert loose or damaged
• Possible carbon damage

Crank Value:

• High-end cranks: repair makes more sense economically
• Mid-range cranks: borderline, consider overall condition
• Older cranks: replacement may be more practical

Overall Crank Condition:

• Near end of service life: consider replacement
• Newer cranks: repair extends useful life
• Other components worn: maybe full crank replacement better

Usage and Intent:

• High-performance use: ensure repair is high quality
• Casual riding: more repair options acceptable
• Racing: ensure reliability—professional repair or replacement

A few Good Prevention Strategies

Proper Installation:

• Always start pedals by hand to prevent cross-threading
• Use torque wrench for proper tightening
• Apply grease or anti-seize to threads
• Check tightness periodically

Regular Inspection:

• Check pedal tightness periodically
• Inspect threads during major service
• Address loose pedals immediately
• Don't over-tighten (causes thread damage)

Quality Components:

• Use quality pedals from reputable manufacturers
• Avoid cheap pedals with poor thread quality
• Replace pedals if threads show wear
