Optimised hollow carbon construction

SRAM revised the carbon lay-up and manufacturing process to remove material without compromising the stiffness expected from its flagship road crank. The hollow construction concentrates carbon where it contributes most to strength and pedalling rigidity, helping the assembly achieve a 29-gram reduction from the previous generation.

The practical benefit is a very low rotating and reciprocating mass, particularly valuable on a lightweight race bike or premium climbing build. While a crankarm upgrade will not transform performance on its own, it can complete a low-weight build while maintaining the solid response expected during out-of-saddle acceleration.

SRAM eight-bolt direct mount

The eight-bolt interface is one of the crankarm assembly’s most useful features. It allows the owner to build the crank with a compatible non-power spider, power-meter spider, integrated road chainring or supported 1x chainring.

This modular construction is especially attractive to existing SRAM AXS riders. A cyclist can initially install a non-power chainring assembly and add compatible power measurement later without replacing the carbon crankarms.

DUB spindle system

SRAM DUB uses a 28.99mm spindle and frame-specific bottom brackets to cover numerous bottom-bracket shell standards. The design aims to balance spindle stiffness, bearing size, sealing and serviceability.

The crankarms can therefore be fitted to many modern road frames once the correct SRAM Road DUB or Road Wide DUB bottom bracket is selected. DUB compatibility does not mean that one bottom bracket fits every frame. The bottom bracket must still match the bicycle’s threaded, press-fit or T47 shell standard.

Expanded short-crank sizing

The addition of 150mm, 155mm and 160mm options reflects growing demand for shorter road crankarms. Shorter cranks can increase pedal clearance, reduce peak hip and knee flexion and allow some riders to maintain a more open hip angle in an aerodynamic position.

They are not automatically faster for every cyclist. Saddle height, saddle setback and cockpit position should be reassessed whenever crank length changes substantially.

Power-ready construction

The crankarms do not contain strain gauges or electronics, but the eight-bolt mounting pattern makes them compatible with selected SRAM and Quarq AXS power-meter systems. This gives riders the choice of building a lightweight non-power crank or creating a race-ready power-meter setup for structured training.

Natural carbon finish

The visible carbon construction gives the product a restrained premium appearance while avoiding unnecessary decorative material. As with any carbon component, the crankarms must be inspected after a crash or significant pedal strike and installed using the specified procedures and torque settings.

Longer crank lengths

The 172.5mm and 175mm versions suit riders whose fit, biomechanics and established pedalling style favour a longer lever. Rider height alone should not determine crank length, as leg proportions, joint mobility, riding position and cadence preference are equally relevant.

  • Changing to a crank that is 5mm shorter may require the saddle to be raised by approximately 5mm as an initial fitting adjustment.

Industry Feedback, Rider Reviews and our own opinion

Road.cc reviewed the complete SRAM RED AXS E1 groupset on 15 May 2024 and awarded it 9/10. The review praised the groupset’s performance, ergonomics and competitive weight. Although the controls and braking received most of the attention, the lighter crank construction contributed to a complete package described as one of the strongest flagship electronic road groupsets available.

Bikerumor published a longer-term SRAM RED AXS E1 review on 27 January 2025 following approximately eight months of use. The reviewer regarded the new generation as a refined and highly compatible flagship platform, with continued support for SRAM’s existing 12-speed AXS components making selective upgrades more practical than a complete drivetrain replacement.

Cleaning and routine inspection

  • Clean the crankarms with mild bicycle cleaner, water and a soft cloth.

  • Inspect both crankarms regularly for cracks, deep scratches, impact marks or changes around the pedal threads and spindle bond.

  • Inspect the eight-bolt chainring or spider interface during scheduled drivetrain servicing.
  • Confirm pedal tightness and inspect the pedal threads whenever pedals are removed.

  • Do not ride the crankarms after a substantial crash or severe pedal strike until they have been professionally inspected.

Installation and servicing

The crankarm assembly must be fitted using SRAM’s current DUB installation procedure. The frame requires the correct Road DUB or Road Wide DUB bottom bracket, and all preload, retaining and mounting parts must be installed in the correct order.

A professional bike shop installation is recommended because poor bottom-bracket preparation, incorrect preload or unsuitable spacers can cause premature bearing wear, drivetrain noise or crank movement. Any power-meter spider or chainring must also be installed using its specified hardware, tightening sequence and torque.

Warranty
