Wide-Range Cage Geometry

The Garbaruk SRAM Force AXS 12-Speed Rear Derailleur Cage and Pulleys Kit changes the path followed by the chain and pulley wheels as the derailleur moves across the cassette. Garbaruk positions the upper pulley closer to the cassette’s smaller sprockets and progressively farther from its largest sprocket.

This revised geometry gives a compatible SRAM AXS road derailleur the clearance required for a sprocket significantly larger than its original factory limit. It creates a practical route to lower 1x gearing without replacing the existing AXS shifter and rear derailleur with a mountain bike drivetrain.

G-Link Derailleur Extender

The supplied G-Link changes the relationship between the derailleur and hanger when the kit is installed on compatible RED, Force and Rival AXS road derailleurs. It is an essential part of the approved road-derailleur conversion and should not be substituted with a generic hanger extender.

XPLR AXS rear derailleurs have different factory geometry and do not require the G-Link when used with this kit.

CNC-Machined Cage

The cage is CNC-machined from a single piece of 7075-series aluminium rather than being stamped from sheet metal. This enables Garbaruk to remove unnecessary material while retaining reinforcement around the pulley mounting points and cage pivot.

The resulting structure is designed to provide high lateral rigidity at a relatively low weight. Better cage rigidity helps maintain pulley alignment, especially when the chain is under load on steep climbs or moving across a wide-range cassette.

Oversized 12T and 16T Pulleys

The 12T upper pulley guides the chain during shifts, while the oversized 16T lower pulley manages the return section of the chain and provides the capacity required by the longer cage.

A larger lower pulley reduces the articulation angle experienced by each chain link as it travels around the wheel. Any real-world efficiency improvement is likely to be modest, but the larger pulley is important to the kit’s chain-management geometry and wide-range cassette compatibility.

7075-T651 Aluminium

The cage and pulleys are made from 7075-T651 aluminium alloy. This is a high-strength material widely used for premium bicycle components requiring a strong balance of stiffness, durability and low mass.

The T651 designation indicates that the aluminium has been heat-treated and stress-relieved. That process helps the machined components retain their intended shape and alignment under drivetrain load.

Anodised Finish

The aluminium components receive a colour-anodised surface treatment. Anodising increases surface hardness and provides additional corrosion resistance while creating the distinctive colours associated with Garbaruk components.

The finish will still experience normal cosmetic wear from chain contact, cleaning, transport and trail debris. Gradual wear to an anodised surface is not normally an indication of structural failure.

In-House Manufacturing

Garbaruk develops and manufactures its drivetrain products at its headquarters near Kraków, Poland. Keeping design, CNC machining and finishing under direct control allows the company to produce application-specific cage geometry and maintain consistent component tolerances.

The Garbaruk SRAM Force AXS 12-Speed Rear Derailleur Cage and Pulleys Kit is best suited to riders converting a SRAM AXS road bike into a capable 1x all-road, gravel or bikepacking machine without replacing the existing wireless controls and rear derailleur.

Chain and Drivetrain Maintenance

Monitor chain wear regularly. A worn chain can reduce shifting quality and accelerate wear on the aluminium pulley teeth and cassette.

Use a lubricant appropriate for local riding conditions. A dry or wax-based product can help reduce dust accumulation in dry Australian conditions, while a more water-resistant lubricant may be appropriate for winter gravel and wet bikepacking trips.

Remove excess lubricant from the chain exterior after application. Excess oil attracts abrasive contamination and does not improve lubrication inside the chain.

Professional Installation

Replacing a derailleur cage requires partial disassembly of the rear derailleur and controlled handling of the cage spring. Incorrect spring placement or preload can affect chain tension and damage the mechanism.

Installation should include:

Confirmation of the exact rear derailleur model and generation
Verification that the bicycle uses a 1x drivetrain
Inspection and alignment of the derailleur hanger
Correct use of the G-Link where required
Correct cage-spring position and preload
Identification of the 12T upper and 16T lower pulleys
Correct pulley orientation
Installation with the supplied bolts
Chain sizing for the selected cassette
Adjustment of cassette-to-pulley clearance
AXS micro-adjustment across the cassette
Forward-pedalling and backpedalling checks
Loaded shifting test before road or trail use

Warranty

Garbaruk provides a two-year warranty from the shipping date against eligible manufacturing defects.

The Bike Mechanics’ Blog published its updated long-term Garbaruk component review on 1 April 2026. The review drew on workshop installations and thousands of kilometres of road, gravel and trail riding since the business began stocking and fitting Garbaruk products in 2021.

Its assessment of Garbaruk derailleur cages was positive, particularly for riders wanting to expand the cassette capacity of an existing 1x drivetrain. The review highlighted the brand’s in-house Polish manufacturing, low component weights, detailed machining and extensive colour options. It also noted that Garbaruk cages are application-specific and must be matched carefully to the derailleur model, pulley configuration, cassette and chain.

Standard SRAM Force AXS Road Cage

Best for: Road riders using factory-approved 10-28T to 10-36T cassettes and 1x or 2x configurations.

Advantages:

Original SRAM factory configuration
Straightforward setup
Supports 2x operation where specified by SRAM
Excellent road shifting with approved cassettes
No aftermarket conversion components required

Considerations:

Does not provide 48T or 50T cassette capacity
Limited climbing range for steep gravel and loaded bikepacking
Less colour customisation
Cannot match the range of a mountain-style 1x drivetrain

SRAM XPLR AXS Rear Derailleur

Best for: Riders wanting a complete factory-designed SRAM gravel derailleur with up to 44T cassette capability, depending on the generation.

Advantages:

Native SRAM gravel design
Factory-engineered chain management
Straightforward AXS integration
Good balance between close ratios and gravel range
No aftermarket G-Link required

Considerations:

Standard 12-speed XPLR gearing typically stops at 44T
A complete derailleur purchase costs more than retaining an existing road AXS unit
Still requires an aftermarket solution to reach a Garbaruk 48T or 50T cassette
Does not provide the same visual customisation as the Garbaruk kit

SRAM Eagle AXS Mullet Conversion

Best for: Riders wanting a factory mountain bike derailleur and native 10-50T or 10-52T cassette capability.

Advantages:

Proven wide-range mountain bike architecture
Native compatibility with large cassette sprockets
Strong chain control on rough terrain
Up to 520% cassette range
Suitable for demanding bikepacking and technical gravel

Considerations:

Requires a compatible Eagle AXS derailleur and chain
More expensive if the bike already has a road AXS derailleur
Uses mountain-bike cassette progression with wider gear steps
Can add weight compared with a lightweight road-based conversion
Compatibility depends on the specific shifters, derailleur generation and cassette

CeramicSpeed OSPW System for SRAM AXS

Best for: Performance-focused road riders prioritising premium bearings and marginal drivetrain-efficiency gains.

Advantages:

High-grade bearing options
Established performance and racing reputation
Complete cage-and-pulley assembly
Refined premium construction

Considerations:

Significantly more expensive
Primarily focused on drivetrain efficiency rather than increasing cassette capacity
Does not necessarily support a 50T cassette
Less relevant to riders whose main objective is lower climbing gearing
Higher servicing and replacement costs

The Garbaruk kit’s central advantage is not simply its oversized pulley system. Its real value is the revised cage geometry and G-Link that allow a compatible SRAM AXS road derailleur to manage a substantially wider cassette.
