Notable Tech, Materials & Construction

The Shimano Ultegra FC-R8100-P integrates strain sensors into both crank arms, enabling the power meter to record force from each side of the rider’s pedal stroke. Unlike a single-sided power meter that measures one leg and doubles the result, this dual-sided system can display total output and left-right contribution separately.

A total of 24 proprietary strain sensors detects the minute deformation created in the crank arms as force is transferred through the pedals. The system processes this information and broadcasts power, cadence and balance data to a compatible GPS cycling computer, smartwatch or training application.

Active temperature compensation automatically adjusts the power calculation as component and ambient temperatures change. This is useful for Australian cyclists whose early-morning training rides can begin in cool conditions before temperatures rise significantly later in the session.

An integrated rechargeable lithium-ion battery eliminates the need for disposable coin cells. Shimano quotes up to 226 hours of operation, although actual battery life depends on Bluetooth and ANT+ settings, connected devices, temperature and usage. Charging is completed with the Shimano EW-EC300 cable, which is also used by compatible 12-speed Shimano Di2 equipment.

HOLLOWTECH II construction combines hollow-forged aluminium crank arms with an integrated 24mm axle. This design distributes pedalling loads through outboard bottom bracket bearings and is engineered to balance stiffness, strength, low weight and smooth rotational performance.

The HOLLOWGLIDE outer chainring uses a hollow profile to increase lateral rigidity without excessive weight. Greater chainring stiffness helps the front derailleur move the chain quickly and accurately, particularly during shifts made under moderate pedalling load.

Size, Fit, Geometry & Measurements

The shortest option is available in the crank-only configuration without chainrings. It is suitable for riders who have been professionally fitted to shorter cranks, including smaller cyclists, triathletes seeking additional hip clearance and riders managing restricted hip or knee movement.

165mm

A popular short-crank option for performance road riding and triathlon. It may provide greater clearance at the top of the pedal stroke and make it easier to maintain an aerodynamic riding position.

172.5mm

A traditional performance-road option commonly fitted to medium and large road bikes.

175mm

A longer crank option suited to riders whose bike fit, mobility and pedalling characteristics support the additional crank length.

Crank length should be selected through a professional bike fit rather than rider height alone. Changing crank length can affect saddle height, hip angle, knee movement, cadence and overall riding position.

Available gearing

50-34T compact

The compact chainring combination offers the most accessible climbing range. It is the most versatile choice for endurance riders, recreational cyclists and anyone regularly tackling steep Australian climbs or long gran fondo courses.

52-36T mid-compact

This performance-focused combination provides a larger top gear for racing and fast bunch rides while retaining a more manageable inner chainring than a traditional 53-39T racing crankset.

Crankset without chainrings

Chainring-free versions allow riders to reuse compatible Shimano R8100 rings or purchase their preferred gearing separately. The correct Shimano 12-speed chainrings should be used to retain the intended shifting performance.

Key dimensions

  • Crank lengths: 160mm, 165mm, 170mm, 172.5mm and 175mm
  • Q-factor: 148mm
  • Chainline: 44.5mm
  • Axle diameter: 24mm
  • Chainring pitch circle diameter: 110mm asymmetric
  • Pedal thread: 9/16-inch
Who it is best suited for and where it is best suited

The Shimano Ultegra FC-R8100-P is best suited to committed road cyclists, racers, triathletes and endurance riders who already use, or are building, a Shimano 12-speed road bike and want fully integrated power measurement without changing their preferred pedals.

Industry Feedback, Rider Reviews and our own opinion

DC Rainmaker published a technical analysis of Shimano’s second-generation Dura-Ace and Ultegra power meters on 1 September 2021. The initial assessment highlighted the clean factory integration, rechargeable battery, broad wireless connectivity and Shimano’s revised approach to strain-gauge placement and crank manufacture. The Shimano Ultegra FC-R8100-P was considered a potentially compelling choice for cyclists wanting an integrated dual-sided power meter within a matching Shimano drivetrain.

Product Care & Warranty Info

Product Care

  • Clean regularly with mild bike-safe cleaner.
  • Avoid high-pressure washing around the bottom bracket area.
  • Inspect chainrings for wear, damaged teeth or poor chain engagement.
  • Replace the chain before excessive wear damages the chainrings.
  • Check crank fixing bolt torque during regular servicing.
  • Use compatible Shimano HG 12-speed chains for best shifting performance.
  • Inspect bottom bracket bearings if creaking, roughness or play develops.
  • Avoid harsh degreasers directly on bearings or seals.
  • Replace chainrings when front shifting performance noticeably declines.
  • Book a professional drivetrain service if shifting becomes noisy or inconsistent.

Warranty Information

  • Covered by Shimano manufacturer warranty against defects in materials and workmanship.
  • Normal wear, crash damage, incorrect installation, corrosion, chainring wear and misuse are generally not covered.
  • Professional installation is recommended for correct torque, bottom bracket setup and drivetrain adjustment.
  • Regular drivetrain servicing helps protect the crankset, chainrings, chain and cassette.
