The spider measures total torque passing through the crank and combines it with cadence to calculate power. It also reports left-to-right power balance, although this balance figure is derived from the distribution of force through the pedal stroke rather than from two fully independent crank sensors.

For training purposes, the system provides the key figures required by most Australian cyclists:

Current power
Average power
Maximum power
Cadence
Left-to-right power balance
Normalised or weighted power when calculated by the connected cycling computer
Training load and intensity when processed through compatible software

Temperature compensation

SRAM states that power accuracy remains within plus or minus 1.5 per cent and is not affected by changing climatic conditions during a ride. Automatic temperature compensation is valuable on Australian rides that begin in cool morning conditions and finish in significantly warmer temperatures.

X-SYNC chain retention

The X-SYNC chainring uses alternating wide and narrow tooth profiles that correspond with the inner and outer chain links. Taller, squared tooth edges engage the chain earlier than conventional triangular teeth, helping retain the chain without a front derailleur.

Mud-clearing recesses around the teeth help prevent dirt from accumulating between the ring and chain. Although this version is primarily designed for fast road use, the retention technology is useful on rough chip-seal surfaces, railway crossings and maintained unsealed sectors.

Aerodynamic chainring construction

The solid-profile 50-tooth chainring presents a smoother surface to the airflow than a conventional open-spider chainring. This makes it most relevant to time-trial bikes, triathlon bikes, aero road bikes and solo breakaway builds, where riders are seeking incremental aerodynamic improvements.

The aerodynamic gain will depend on the complete bicycle, wind direction, speed and rider position. It should be regarded as one element of an aero build rather than a substitute for an efficient riding position.

Carbon crankarms

The Force carbon crankarms combine a premium appearance with high stiffness and lower weight than comparable aluminium arms. Their rigid construction helps transmit force efficiently during standing starts, short climbs and high-power accelerations.

Carbon components require careful installation and inspection. Deep abrasions, crushing damage and significant pedal strikes should be assessed by a qualified bicycle mechanic rather than treated as cosmetic marks.

DUB spindle system

SRAM DUB uses a 28.99mm spindle designed to balance stiffness, bearing size, sealing and compatibility. A frame-specific Road DUB bottom bracket connects the crankset to common threaded, press-fit and T47 road bottom-bracket shells.

DUB does not mean that one bottom bracket fits every bicycle. The correct unit must match both the SRAM Road DUB spindle and the frame’s bottom-bracket standard.

AXS connectivity

The power meter communicates through ANT+ and Bluetooth. ANT+ supports most performance GPS cycling computers, while Bluetooth allows connection to supported phones, indoor training applications and other compatible devices.

The SRAM AXS app can be used to check battery status, perform firmware updates and manage the power meter. A manual zero-offset calibration is also recommended during initial setup and following battery replacement.

Crankarm lengths (limited supply and availability, please check status and ETA as indicated):

160mm
165mm
170mm
172.5mm
175mm

160mm

The shortest available option can suit smaller riders, cyclists with limited hip mobility and triathletes seeking a more open hip angle in an aggressive aerodynamic position. It also provides additional pedal clearance through corners.

165mm

A popular contemporary performance-road length, particularly for riders moving away from traditional 170mm or 172.5mm cranks. It can reduce peak knee and hip flexion while supporting a smooth, high-cadence pedalling style.

170mm

A versatile middle-ground option that suits a wide range of road cyclists. It is a logical choice for riders already comfortable on 170mm cranks who do not require a significant bike-fit change.

172.5mm

A long-established road standard frequently used on medium-to-large race bikes. It suits riders whose existing fit, cadence and joint movement work well with a moderately long crank.

175mm

The longest available version is intended for riders whose biomechanics, leg proportions and established fit favour the additional crank length. Height alone should not determine whether a rider needs 175mm cranks.

Crank-length fitting considerations

Changing crank length alters the position of the pedal at the top and bottom of the stroke. If a rider moves from 172.5mm to 165mm crankarms, the saddle will commonly need to be raised by approximately 7.5mm as an initial adjustment to preserve similar maximum leg extension.

Saddle setback, handlebar drop and cleat position may also need to be reviewed. A professional bike fit is recommended for large changes, especially where the rider is managing hip, knee or lower-back discomfort.

The SRAM Force 1 AXS E1 Aero Power Meter Crankset is best suited to triathletes, time-trial riders, criterium racers, powerful road cyclists and performance-focused riders who want a simple 1x drivetrain with integrated training data.

Routine cleaning

Wash the crankset with mild bicycle cleaner, clean water and a soft cloth.
Avoid aggressive solvents and abrasive polishing compounds.
Do not direct high-pressure water at the bottom bracket or power-meter battery cover.
Keep chain degreaser away from the power-meter seals.
Dry the crankset after wet rides, particularly around the spindle and battery compartment.

Drivetrain care

Clean and lubricate the chain at intervals appropriate to riding conditions.
Use a lubricant suitable for dry road dust, wet coastal riding or mixed conditions.
Check chain wear regularly with a compatible chain-checking tool.
Replace a worn chain before it accelerates wear on the chainring and cassette.
Inspect the X-SYNC teeth for impact damage, hooked profiles or unusual wear.
Check the chainring following a dropped chain or drivetrain impact.

Power-meter care

Replace the CR2032 battery when low charge is reported.
Use a fresh, reputable battery and avoid touching both faces with greasy hands.
Clean the battery-cover seal before reassembly.
Check that the cover is properly seated before riding in wet conditions.
Pair the power meter with the SRAM AXS app periodically.
Install firmware updates when recommended.
Perform a zero-offset calibration after installation and battery replacement.
Calibrate after the bicycle has reached ambient outdoor temperature when practical.

Carbon crankarm inspection

Inspect the crankarms after a crash, transport incident or heavy pedal strike.
Look for cracks, crushed areas, deep gouges or lifted carbon fibres.
Stop riding if structural damage is suspected.
Do not attempt to repair carbon crankarms with filler, adhesive or cosmetic resin.
Have questionable damage assessed by an experienced carbon component specialist.

Installation and bicycle servicing

Professional installation is recommended. The bicycle requires the correct Road DUB bottom bracket, approved spacers and proper bearing preload. The chainline, rear derailleur, cassette and chain length must also be configured for the selected 1x drivetrain.

A post-installation bicycle service should include:

Bottom-bracket preload check
Chainring security inspection
Rear-derailleur adjustment
Chain-length confirmation
Power-meter pairing and calibration
Firmware check
Test ride under load

Warranty

SRAM generally warrants bicycle components to the original owner against eligible defects in materials or workmanship for two years from the original date of purchase.

Escape Collective reviewed the SRAM Force XPLR E1 13-speed groupset on 17 June 2025. Reviewer Dave Rome found that SRAM had successfully transferred much of its premium RED XPLR technology into the more attainable Force range. The review highlighted robust chain control, excellent shifting and compatibility with SRAM’s 12-speed Flattop chain despite the 13-speed cassette. It also identified Force as the practical performance tier below RED, providing most of the flagship system’s functional benefits at a lower cost.

In a direct comparison published on 31 March 2026, Escape Collective examined SRAM Force XPLR E1 against Shimano GRX Di2. The SRAM system was praised for its straightforward installation, secure chain management, broad choice of crank lengths, chainring sizes and power-meter options. The publication also considered SRAM’s native power-meter availability a meaningful advantage over Shimano GRX Di2.

Flow Mountain Bike reviewed the complete SRAM Force XPLR E1 groupset on 11 September 2025. The review praised its precise shifting, composed drivetrain and broad AXS ecosystem compatibility. It also noted that the standard 45mm-chainline crank is suitable for XPLR bicycles with shorter chainstays, while longer-chainstay gravel frames generally require the separate Wide version.

GRAN FONDO Cycling Magazine tested the 2025 SRAM Force AXS and Force XPLR AXS groupsets on 17 June 2025. The publication found that Force had moved noticeably closer to RED in performance and described the latest generation as delivering much of the flagship system’s technology at a more approachable level.

These reviews primarily assess the complete drivetrain rather than isolating the aero power meter crankset. Their findings are still relevant because chain control, cassette selection and rear-derailleur behaviour determine how successfully this 1x crankset performs on the road.

Rider and community sentiment

Riders interested in the SRAM Force 1 AXS E1 commonly praise the clean appearance of the solid aero chainring and the ability to combine power data with a simplified drivetrain. Time-trial and triathlon riders particularly value eliminating the front derailleur, front shift control and second chainring.
