The cassette is designed as part of SRAM’s current 1x13-speed XPLR system. It should not be treated as a standalone upgrade for an older 12-speed drivetrain.

Thirteen-speed gravel gearing

The additional sprocket allows the SRAM Force XPLR XG-1371 Cassette to combine close high-speed ratios with a substantial 46T climbing sprocket.

The four smallest sprockets progress in single-tooth steps:

10T
11T
12T
13T

These close ratios help riders make small cadence corrections during fast gravel racing, road transfers and group riding. The gaps increase progressively through the cassette as lower climbing gears become more important than fine cadence control.

This arrangement provides:

Smooth cadence progression at racing speeds
Useful mid-range gears for rolling terrain
A genuine low gear for steep gravel climbs
Simpler operation than a 2x drivetrain
No front derailleur or front chainring shift
Broad gearing without a mountain bike cassette

Full Pin construction

SRAM’s Full Pin architecture connects the sprockets using high-strength pins rather than relying on a single conventional carrier. This helps balance cassette stiffness, low weight and resistance to high pedalling loads.

A stiff cassette structure supports more accurate gear changes by keeping the sprockets correctly aligned as the chain moves across them. It is particularly useful during steep climbing, hard accelerations and shifts made on rough terrain.

Hardened steel sprockets

Most of the sprockets use hardened steel to provide the strength and wear resistance needed for gravel riding. The smaller sprockets experience frequent chain engagement and high tooth loads, making steel the practical material for the main cassette body.

Aluminium 46T sprocket

The physically large 46T sprocket is constructed from aluminium to reduce weight. Aluminium is lighter than steel but can wear more quickly if used with a stretched, contaminated or poorly lubricated chain.

Regular chain-wear checks are especially important because premature chain elongation can accelerate wear on the cassette’s climbing gears.

Nickel-chrome surface treatment

The cassette uses nickel-chrome plating to resist wear and corrosion while helping the chain move smoothly between sprockets.

This treatment is useful in Australian conditions that can include:

Coastal humidity
Fine gravel dust
Wet winter roads
Muddy race circuits
Creek crossings
Highly abrasive dry terrain

The coating does not make the cassette maintenance-free. Regular cleaning and correct lubrication remain necessary.

Cassette progression

1st sprocket: 10T
2nd sprocket: 11T
3rd sprocket: 12T
4th sprocket: 13T
5th sprocket: 15T
6th sprocket: 17T
7th sprocket: 19T
8th sprocket: 21T
9th sprocket: 24T
10th sprocket: 28T
11th sprocket: 32T
12th sprocket: 38T
13th sprocket: 46T

Chainring pairing

38T chainring

A 38T chainring provides the lowest gearing and is well suited to steep fire roads, technical gravel, bikepacking and long endurance events.

Lowest ratio: 38 divided by 46, approximately 0.83
Highest ratio: 38 divided by 10, or 3.80

40T chainring

A 40T chainring offers a strong balance for hilly gravel racing and all-day mixed-surface riding.

Lowest ratio: Approximately 0.87
Highest ratio: 4.00

42T chainring

The 42T configuration is a versatile all-round option for Australian gravel racing, rolling country roads and fast sealed transfers.

Lowest ratio: Approximately 0.91
Highest ratio: 4.20

The SRAM Force XPLR XG-1371 Cassette is ideal for gravel racers, endurance riders and performance-focused cyclists who want the simplicity of a 1x drivetrain without excessively large jumps between high-speed gears.

Routine cleaning

Clean the cassette regularly using a soft brush and bicycle-safe drivetrain cleaner.
Remove gravel dust, mud and grass from between the sprockets.
Avoid soaking the freehub body and wheel bearings with degreaser.
Do not direct high-pressure water at the cassette or hub seals.
Rinse gently when required and dry the drivetrain thoroughly.
Remove excess chain lubricant before it attracts abrasive contamination.

Chain maintenance

Cassette longevity depends heavily on chain condition.

Use a compatible SRAM Road Flattop chain.
Measure chain wear using a suitable Flattop-compatible chain checker.
Replace the chain before excessive elongation damages the sprockets.
Clean the chain after wet, dusty or muddy rides.
Apply lubricant suitable for local riding conditions.
Remove excess lubricant after application.
Use an approved SRAM PowerLock when fitting or reconnecting the chain.
Do not substitute an unapproved T-Type or conventional road chain.

Cassette inspection

Inspect regularly for:

Hooked sprocket teeth
Chipped or bent teeth
Excessive wear on frequently used gears
Loose cassette fitment
Unusual lateral movement
Corrosion or coating damage
Cracks around the aluminium sprocket
Skipping after a new chain is installed

A new chain skipping on selected gears often indicates that the cassette has reached the end of its service life.

Installation and servicing

Confirm that the wheel uses an XDR freehub.
Clean and inspect the driver before installation.
Check the freehub splines for damage.
Install the cassette with the correct lockring tool.
Tighten it to SRAM’s specified torque.
Confirm that the cassette has no lateral movement.
Check clearance to the spokes and frame.
Fit a compatible Road Flattop chain.
Size the chain according to SRAM’s XPLR procedure.
Test every gear under controlled load.

Warranty

SRAM generally provides the original owner with a two-year limited warranty against qualifying defects in materials or workmanship.

GRAN FONDO Cycling Magazine reviewed the wider SRAM Force XPLR AXS E1 drivetrain on 17 June 2025. The publication found that Force had inherited much of RED XPLR’s core technology and delivered pro-level functionality at a more accessible price. The drivetrain’s close ratio progression, strong chain management and wireless integration were viewed as meaningful advantages for fast gravel riding.

Rider and community sentiment

Positive rider feedback commonly focuses on the balance between range and cadence control.

Most appreciated characteristics include:

Smooth progression through the fastest gears
Useful 46T climbing sprocket
Consistent shifting over rough gravel
Existing XDR wheel compatibility
No requirement for a new chain standard
Lower price than the RED XPLR cassette
Premium silver finish
Practical balance of weight and durability
Strong compatibility with Force XPLR AXS E1
Versatile gearing for mixed-surface racing

Some riders consider the 10-11-12-13T progression especially valuable during gravel races with long, fast sections. Traditional wide-range 1x cassettes can force the rider to choose between two noticeably different cadences at speed, whereas the SRAM Force XPLR XG-1371 Cassette offers finer adjustments through the smallest sprockets.
