Integrated power meter and chainring

The SRAM RED AXS Aero Power Meter Kit integrates the spider-based power meter directly into the aero chainring. This eliminates the separate chainring-to-spider interface found in a modular system and creates a stiff connection between the crankarms, measurement system and chain-driving teeth.

Spider-based power measurement

Strain gauges within the spider detect total torque passing from the crankarms into the chainring. The power meter combines torque with cadence to calculate power in watts.

Spider measurement captures the combined contribution of both legs. Left-to-right balance is calculated from the distribution of power through the crank rotation rather than measured by two fully independent sensors.

Road and Road Wide fit

The 6.5mm chainring offset can support different installed chainlines depending on the compatible crankarm and spindle configuration.

Standard Road DUB configurations commonly produce an approximately 45mm chainline.

The correct setup depends on the frame, crankarms, spindle and rear drivetrain. A wider crankset should not be installed solely to create tyre clearance without checking cassette alignment and derailleur compatibility.

DC Rainmaker published an in-depth review of SRAM RED AXS and its Quarq-based power meter on 16 May 2024 after more than two months of riding. The power meter was assessed against established reference devices through steady efforts, changing intensities and harder accelerations. The recorded power and cadence data aligned closely with the comparison units, while ANT+ and Bluetooth communication worked reliably with mainstream cycling computers.

The review also praised SRAM’s broader electronic integration, including compatibility with Garmin, Wahoo and Hammerhead head units. Its findings support the platform as a serious training and race tool rather than an aero chainring with power measurement added as an afterthought.

Owners of compatible non-power SRAM RED and Force cranksets also appreciate that the kit provides a direct route to integrated power measurement without replacing the crankarms.

The most common criticism is replacement expense. Riders who change chainring size frequently or wear through rings quickly may prefer a modular power-meter spider with separately replaceable chainrings.
