Integrated Quarq power measurement

The power meter is integrated into the chainring and spider structure, positioning the strain-measuring system close to the centre of the crankset. This creates a stiff and compact measuring platform without the additional interfaces of a modular crank, spider and chainring assembly.

The system measures total torque passing through the spider and combines it with cadence to calculate rider power. It also reports left-to-right power balance, providing useful information about how evenly a rider contributes power during each side of the pedal stroke.

This balance figure is derived from force distribution rather than produced by two completely independent power sensors. It is useful for monitoring long-term trends but should not be treated as a clinical assessment of leg function.

The power meter provides the essential data required for:

Structured interval training
Functional threshold power testing
Time-trial pacing
Triathlon pacing
Race analysis
Training-load calculations
Monitoring fatigue during long events
Reviewing left-to-right power contribution

Temperature compensation

The power meter is designed to maintain its claimed accuracy as environmental temperatures change during a ride. This is particularly relevant in Australia, where an early-morning training session may begin in cool conditions and finish in significantly warmer weather.

Hollow carbon crankarms

SRAM uses an optimised carbon lay-up to produce exceptionally light crankarms without sacrificing the stiffness expected from a flagship road crankset. The updated construction reduces weight by 29 grams compared with the previous generation.

The hollow structure places carbon material where it contributes most to strength and rigidity while removing unnecessary mass from lower-stress areas. This provides a direct response during standing starts, high-power accelerations and short climbs.

Integrated aero chainring

The broad chainring surface presents a cleaner profile to the airflow than a traditional open spider and chainring. Its aerodynamic benefit is most relevant on time-trial bikes, triathlon bikes and aero road bikes ridden at sustained high speeds.

The actual aerodynamic saving will depend on the complete bicycle, selected chainring size, wind direction, rider speed and leg position. It should be considered one part of a complete aero setup rather than a substitute for professional bike fitting or an efficient riding position.

X-SYNC chain retention

The X-SYNC chainring uses alternating wide and narrow teeth corresponding with the inner and outer links of the chain. Tall, square-edged teeth engage the chain early, while shaped recesses help clear contamination from around the chain rollers.

Available crank lengths (note, some crank arms may not be available for immediate pick up or delivery, please check ETA)

160mm
165mm
167.5mm
170mm
172.5mm
175mm

160mm and 165mm crankarms

The shorter options can suit smaller riders, cyclists with limited hip mobility and triathletes seeking a more open hip angle in an aggressive aerodynamic position. Shorter crankarms also provide additional pedal clearance through corners.

167.5mm and 170mm crankarms

These intermediate lengths suit riders looking for a compromise between shorter contemporary fit preferences and traditional road crank dimensions. The 167.5mm option is particularly useful for making a smaller bike-fit adjustment rather than moving directly between 165mm and 170mm.

172.5mm and 175mm crankarms

The longer options suit riders whose established bike fit, leg proportions and preferred pedalling cadence work well with traditional road crank lengths. Rider height alone should not determine crank length.

Bike-fit considerations

Moving to shorter crankarms changes the upper and lower positions of the pedal stroke. For example, moving from 172.5mm to 165mm crankarms may require the saddle to be raised by approximately 7.5mm as an initial adjustment to maintain similar maximum leg extension.

The SRAM RED 1 AXS E1 Aero Power Meter Crankset is best suited to competitive triathletes, time-trial riders, criterium racers and performance-focused road cyclists who want accurate training data and the simplicity of a 1x drivetrain.

Road.cc tested the complete SRAM RED AXS E1 groupset on 15 May 2024 and awarded it 9/10. Reviewer Stu Kerton praised its performance, ergonomics, appearance and competitive weight, describing it as one of the strongest premium electronic road systems available.

Cyclist published its SRAM RED AXS E1 review on 15 May 2024. The publication highlighted improved braking, accurate shifting, competitive weight and benchmark electronic connectivity. Although its review assessed the complete groupset rather than isolating the 1x crankset, it reinforced SRAM RED’s position as a refined and highly integrated performance platform.

SRAM Force 1 AXS E1 Aero Power Meter Crankset

The SRAM Force version is the closest value-focused alternative.

SRAM Force advantages:

Significantly lower purchase price
Carbon crankarms
Integrated power measurement
Claimed accuracy within plus or minus 1.5 per cent
X-SYNC aero chainring
SRAM AXS connectivity
Excellent value for competitive riders

SRAM RED advantages:

Lower overall weight
Lighter hollow carbon crankarm construction
More premium materials and finish
Broader selection of crank lengths
Better suited to no-compromise race builds

The SRAM Force 1 AXS E1 Aero Power Meter Crankset is the stronger value choice for most riders. SRAM RED is intended for cyclists prioritising minimum weight, flagship construction and premium race-bike presentation.

SRAM RED 1 AXS E1 Non-Power Crankset

The non-power version provides similar drivetrain simplicity without an integrated power meter.

Non-power version advantages:

Lower purchase price
No power-meter battery to maintain
Suitable for riders already using power-meter pedals
Simpler option for cyclists who do not train with power
Reduced replacement concern if the chainring becomes damaged

Power-meter version advantages:

Integrated power and cadence data
Left-to-right balance reporting
Clean permanent installation
Freedom to use conventional pedals
No need to move power-meter pedals between bicycles

The non-power crankset is better for riders already using pedal-based measurement. The SRAM RED 1 AXS E1 Aero Power Meter Crankset is more suitable for a permanent race-bike installation.
