The Shimano RT-CL700 Disc Brake Rotor uses a three-layer brake-track construction consisting of:

The aluminium core conducts heat away from the braking track more quickly than a conventional solid-steel rotor. This helps control temperature during repeated braking and extended descents.

Rotor size guide

140mm

The 140mm Shimano RT-CL700 Disc Brake Rotor is the lightest version and is primarily suited to the rear of lightweight road bikes. It works best for lighter riders, flatter routes and applications where reducing rotational weight matters more than maximising heat capacity.

160mm

The 160mm version is the most versatile choice for road and gravel bikes. It offers stronger heat management and braking leverage than a 140mm rotor without a major weight increase. A 160mm front and 160mm rear setup is a dependable option for heavier riders, hilly terrain and long Australian descents.

180mm

The 180mm rotor provides greater braking leverage and thermal capacity for demanding gravel, cross-country mountain biking, trail riding and lighter e-bike applications. Frame, fork and caliper-adapter compatibility must be checked before increasing rotor size.

203mm

The 203mm version is intended for mountain bikes, e-bikes and heavier riders requiring maximum heat capacity and braking leverage. It is not suitable for every frame or fork, and the manufacturer’s approved maximum rotor size must be followed.

Cleaning and maintenance

Clean the rotor with isopropyl alcohol or a dedicated bicycle disc brake cleaner.
Use a clean, lint-free cloth reserved exclusively for brake components.
Keep chain lubricant, grease, degreaser and silicone spray away from the braking surface.
Do not touch the braking track with oily or contaminated hands.
Inspect the rotor regularly for scoring, cracks, heat discolouration and distortion.
Measure rotor thickness at several points using a suitable micrometer or digital caliper.
Replace the rotor when it reaches Shimano’s marked minimum thickness.
Check lockring torque after initial installation and periodic servicing.
Inspect brake-pad thickness and replace pads before the backing plate reaches the rotor.
Bed in new pads and rotors with a series of controlled stops before demanding riding.
Avoid dragging the brakes continuously on long descents where safe braking technique allows intermittent braking.
Do not cool a hot rotor suddenly with water.
