Notable Tech, Materials & Construction

Shimano Di2 Wireless Shifting

The Shimano Ultegra R8170 Di2 Brake Set uses wireless controls at the handlebars, removing the need to route shift wires from the levers through the frame. Shift commands are transmitted to the compatible Di2 rear derailleur, which acts as the system’s wireless receiver and central control point.

The result is a cleaner handlebar area and a simpler installation on compatible road frames. Riders still receive the light, consistent button action associated with Shimano Di2, with no mechanical gear cables to stretch, corrode or gradually lose adjustment.

Shimano E-Tube Project allows riders and mechanics to configure shift-button functions, install firmware updates and personalise the electronic shifting system. Full and semi-synchronised shifting modes can also be configured according to rider preference.

SERVO WAVE Braking

SERVO WAVE changes the relationship between brake-lever movement and pad travel. The pads move rapidly towards the rotor during the first part of the lever stroke, providing a quick initial braking point. Once the pads contact the rotor, the system provides a broader control range for progressive braking modulation.

This makes it easier to apply small braking corrections on fast descents, control speed before corners and produce strong stopping power without an unnecessarily abrupt lever feel.

Ergonomic Lever Design

The Shimano Ultegra ST-R8170 hoods have a raised front section designed to provide a secure hand position during climbing, rough-road riding and sustained braking from the hoods. The lever body is shaped to distribute hand pressure and create a stable grip for long road rides.

Reach adjustment allows the lever blade to be positioned closer to or farther from the handlebar. Free-stroke adjustment further refines the amount of lever movement before the pads begin applying meaningful braking force.

Wider Brake Pad Clearance

The Shimano Ultegra BR-R8170 calipers provide ten per cent more pad-to-rotor clearance than the previous Ultegra generation. This additional space reduces the likelihood of light rotor contact after hard braking, out-of-saddle climbing or minor wheel movement.

The wider clearance also makes caliper alignment less sensitive to tiny setup variations, helping produce quieter operation on real-world roads.

ICE TECHNOLOGIES Compatibility

The calipers accept Shimano brake pads with optional cooling fins. These fins help transfer heat away from the braking surface, improving consistency during repeated braking and long descents.

For a complete heat-management system, the brakes can be paired with Shimano RT-CL800 or RT-MT800 rotors. These rotors use a layered construction designed to dissipate heat more effectively than a basic stainless steel rotor.

ONE WAY BLEEDING

Shimano’s ONE WAY BLEEDING system uses an internal oil-flow path designed to discourage air from becoming trapped in the hydraulic circuit. This helps qualified mechanics achieve a firm lever feel with a cleaner and more efficient bleeding procedure.

Size, Fit, Geometry & Measurements

The Shimano Ultegra ST-R8170 levers are designed for drop handlebars with a clamping diameter of 23.8 to 24.2mm at the lever mounting area.

Brake mounting

The Shimano Ultegra BR-R8170 uses the road flat-mount standard. The frame and fork must have compatible flat-mount fittings.

Rotor sizing

The system is commonly configured with:

  • 140mm front and rear rotors for lighter riders, flatter terrain and weight-focused builds
  • 160mm front and 140mm rear rotors for balanced road performance
  • 160mm front and rear rotors for heavier riders, steep terrain and increased heat capacity

Always follow the frame and fork manufacturer’s permitted rotor sizes.

Brake hose sizing

  • Front hose: 1000mm
  • Rear hose: 1700mm

The supplied hoses may require shortening to suit the bicycle. Cutting and reconnecting a hydraulic hose requires the correct Shimano fittings, tools and bleeding procedure.

Lever fit

Reach adjustment allows the lever position to accommodate different hand sizes and handlebar shapes. The raised hood body gives riders a secure forward hand position, although those with particularly small hands should have the levers positioned carefully during installation.

Fitment requirements

  • Compatible Shimano 12-speed Di2 front and rear derailleurs
  • Compatible Shimano Di2 central battery
  • Flat-mount frame and fork
  • Compatible 140mm or 160mm Centre Lock rotors
  • Correct front adapter for the selected rotor size
  • Correct rear mounting-bolt length for the frame
  • Compatible Shimano 12-speed cassette, chain and crankset
  • Drop handlebar with the correct clamp diameter

Rotors, Di2 derailleurs, Di2 battery, cassette, chain, crankset and brake adapters are not included

Who it is best suited for and where it is best suited

The Shimano Ultegra R8170 Di2 Brake Set is best suited to performance road cyclists, criterium racers, endurance riders, triathletes and serious recreational cyclists building or upgrading a modern flat-mount disc road bike.

Industry Feedback, Rider Reviews and our own opinion

road.cc, 19 May 2022

In its independent review of the complete Shimano Ultegra R8170 Di2 Disc groupset, road.cc praised the system’s exceptionally fast and smooth electronic shifting, improved brake-pad clearance and quiet braking after sustained heat exposure. The publication found very little practical performance difference between Ultegra R8170 and the considerably more expensive Dura-Ace R9200 platform.

The reviewer particularly valued the braking improvements over the preceding Ultegra generation. Increased rotor clearance helped address intermittent brake rub, while the revised lever and caliper combination provided controlled braking without unwanted noise after demanding use. The review concluded that Ultegra offered the more sensible purchase for riders who did not need the minor weight reduction associated with Dura-Ace.

Gravel Cyclist, 25 October 2023

Gravel Cyclist assessed the Ultegra R8170 Di2 platform over an extended period on paved and mixed surfaces. Although Shimano Ultegra is designed primarily for road riding, the testing found that the electronic shifting and hydraulic controls remained smooth and functional across varied road conditions.

  • Check the hoses, lever connections and calipers for leaks or damage.
  • Replace damaged or kinked hydraulic hoses immediately.
  • Update Di2 firmware through Shimano E-Tube Project.
  • Replace each lever’s CR1632 batteries when the system indicates low charge.
  • Check button operation and wireless pairing before major events.
  • Inspect lever bodies and calipers after a crash.
  • Have the brakes bled if the lever feels soft, inconsistent or travels excessively.
  • Use a torque wrench when installing the levers, calipers and adapters.
  • Bed in new brake pads and rotors before hard or extended braking.
  • Arrange installation through an experienced bicycle mechanic if hoses require cutting or the system requires bleeding.
