AXS wireless control

SRAM AXS removes mechanical shift cables between the controls and derailleurs. The system can be configured through the SRAM AXS app, where riders can assign control functions, monitor component status and install firmware updates. This creates a cleaner road bike cockpit and makes control customisation easier than with a conventional mechanical groupset.

eTap shift logic

The default eTap arrangement uses the right paddle for a harder gear and the left paddle for an easier gear. On a 2x drivetrain, pressing both primary paddles operates the front derailleur. The straightforward layout is particularly useful when riding under load, wearing full-finger gloves or concentrating on traffic and changing road conditions.

Revised lever architecture

The repositioned brake pivot increases mechanical leverage at the hood. This gives the brake a lighter action and allows meaningful braking force to be generated from the top of the lever, rather than requiring the rider to move into the drops whenever strong braking is needed. The reshaped blade also has a pronounced lower hook, providing more secure finger placement during fast descending.

Carbon LFRT lever

The brake blade uses a lightweight carbon-based LFRT construction. This provides the rigidity required for a precise lever feel while helping SRAM reduce the overall weight of its flagship shift-brake package.

Independent ergonomic adjustment

Reach Adjust changes the resting distance between the lever and handlebar, while Contact Point Adjust alters where brake engagement occurs during the lever stroke. Because these settings operate independently, the lever can be positioned closer to the bar without creating unwanted finger pinch or allowing the blade to bottom out prematurely.

Bonus Button

A textured thumb button on the inside of each hood can be assigned as an extra shift control or used to operate supported ANT+ functions. When paired with a compatible cycling computer, it may allow the rider to change data pages without releasing the hood.

Stiffer caliper construction

The E1 caliper is visibly pared back to remove unnecessary material, but SRAM has also increased structural stiffness. Greater brake-pad clearance reduces the likelihood of intermittent rotor rub following heavy braking, wheel changes or minor rotor movement.

The review identified the new lever and brake design as a particularly meaningful upgrade rather than a minor cosmetic revision.

Cyclist Australia/NZ also found that the revised controls addressed one of the main weaknesses of earlier SRAM AXS generations. Its 2024 review reported that the new hoods gave smaller-handed riders a more realistic fit while providing better finger wrap and a control shape closer to SRAM’s compact earlier-generation eTap levers. He specifically praised braking power from the top of the hood, the higher lever pivot, wet-weather security and the easier-to-access reach adjustment. The review also found that the system remained effective during rainy, loaded descending, an encouraging result for endurance and all-road riders.

Rider and community sentiment

The strongest positive theme in rider discussions is the reduction in braking effort. Riders upgrading from earlier RED or Force AXS controls frequently describe the E1 lever action as much closer to Shimano’s light, well-modulated feel, while retaining SRAM’s fully wireless eTap operation. Several riders also praise the new hood’s palm support, the ability to wrap more fingers around the lever body and the convenient position of the Bonus Button.

Enthusiast feedback also suggests that the controls are a more noticeable upgrade than replacing an already well-functioning AXS rear derailleur. This is because the levers improve three rider contact-point qualities at once: hand comfort, brake power and control accessibility. Critical comments tend to focus on premium pricing and the possibility that the longer body shape may require cockpit repositioning for riders with a carefully established fit.

SRAM provides the original owner with a two-year limited warranty against qualifying defects in materials or workmanship. Claims generally require proof of purchase and should be processed through the original retailer or an authorised SRAM service location.
