Series 0 Carbon Construction
- Series 0 is Cannondale’s most advanced carbon construction and is reserved for flagship LAB71 models.
- The frame uses carefully selected carbon fibres, highly controlled lay-up schedules and size-specific reinforcement to reduce weight without sacrificing the stiffness, impact resistance or durability required for aggressive gravel racing.
- Cannondale claims the size 56cm frame weighs less than 900g. This is exceptionally light for a gravel frame with generous tyre clearance, internal routing and a structure designed for prolonged off-road racing.
- The purpose is not simply to achieve a low scale figure. A gravel race frame must remain predictable during sprinting, loose-surface cornering, braking and repeated impacts. Series 0 construction is designed to combine low mass with the controlled response expected from an elite race bicycle.
Proportional Response Engineering
- Cannondale changes the carbon lay-up and selected dimensions for each frame size.
- A lighter rider on a 46cm frame places different loads through the bike than a taller and more powerful cyclist on a 61cm frame. Applying one stiffness target across every size could make smaller bicycles unnecessarily rigid and larger bikes insufficiently supported.
Proportional Response construction is designed to deliver a consistent balance of:
- Low weight
- Pedalling stiffness
- Vertical compliance
- Torsional control
- Durability
- Predictable handling
Cannondale also varies crank length, cockpit dimensions and seatpost offset across the range.
Aerodynamic Gravel Design
The Cannondale SuperX LAB71 applies road-racing aerodynamic principles to a high-speed gravel platform.
Key aerodynamic elements include:
- Narrow frontal profile
- Sculpted head tube
- Delta Steerer
- Fully concealed brake hoses
- Deep down tube
- Aerodynamically shaped fork
- Integrated SystemBar R-One cockpit
- D-shaped seatpost
- Reserve mixed-depth carbon wheels
- Optional aerodynamic bottle integration
The aerodynamic benefit becomes increasingly relevant as speed rises. Leading gravel groups can travel well above 35km/h across hardpack, tarmac and open dirt roads, where reducing drag can save meaningful energy over several hours.
- Real-world aerodynamic gains vary according to rider position, clothing, wheels, tyres, bottles, wind, surface and speed.
- Terrain-Smoothing Flex Zones
- Specially engineered flex zones through the seat tube, top tube and rear triangle help absorb vibration and repeated gravel impacts.
- These zones work with the D-shaped carbon seatpost to reduce fatigue without making the bicycle feel soft during hard acceleration.
- The system filters high-frequency vibration and takes the edge off square impacts rather than providing suspension-like movement.
- This controlled compliance is particularly valuable during long Australian gravel events where corrugations and broken surfaces can gradually reduce a rider’s ability to maintain power.
D-Shaped Carbon Seatpost
The Cannondale C1 Aero 27 Carbon seatpost combines aerodynamic shaping with controlled rearward flex.
Its profile is designed to:
- Reduce frontal area
- Improve seated comfort
- Moderate gravel vibration
- Reduce cumulative muscle fatigue
- Maintain useful lateral stiffness
- Integrate cleanly with the frame
The carbon post uses an integrated frame binder. Correct torque, clean installation surfaces and suitable carbon assembly compound are important.
OutFront Steering Geometry
Cannondale’s OutFront geometry combines a relatively relaxed head angle with a longer 55mm fork offset.
- This arrangement is designed to provide stability through loose corners and rough descents without making the bicycle feel slow during racing.
- The front wheel tracks confidently at speed, while the steering remains responsive enough for sudden corrections, passing and navigating closely packed gravel groups.
Delta Steerer and Concealed Routing
The Delta Steerer uses a shaped profile that creates room for internal brake-hose routing while reducing the frontal area of the head tube.
Benefits include:
- Cleaner integration
- Reduced frontal area
- Narrower head-tube profile
- Protected brake hoses
- Improved aerodynamic continuity
- Uncluttered appearance
The trade-off is increased workshop complexity. Headset replacement and cockpit changes may require movement or disconnection of the hydraulic hoses.
Professional fitting is strongly recommended before the fork steerer and brake hoses are cut.
SystemBar R-One Carbon Cockpit
- The SystemBar R-One integrates the handlebar and stem into a single full-carbon structure.
- This design reduces separate clamps and creates a smooth aerodynamic transition into the frame. It also keeps the brake hoses completely concealed.
- The integrated format limits independent handlebar-width and stem-length adjustment. If the rider’s fit changes, replacing the complete cockpit may be necessary.
This makes correct initial sizing particularly important.
SRAM RED XPLR AXS 13-Speed
SRAM RED XPLR AXS combines wireless electronic controls with a Full-Mount rear derailleur and dedicated 13-speed gravel cassette.
Potential benefits include:
- Precise wireless shifting
- No mechanical shift cables
- Programmable controls
- Removable derailleur battery
- Integrated power measurement
- Full-Mount construction
- Broad 460% cassette range
- Premium carbon crank arms
- Simplified single-chainring operation
The derailleur mounts directly around the rear axle, creating a strong relationship between the derailleur and cassette.
The drivetrain requires an SRAM XDR freehub and dedicated compatible chain, cassette, derailleur and controls.
BSA Threaded Bottom Bracket
The 68mm BSA threaded bottom bracket adds practical serviceability to an otherwise highly integrated race bike.
Advantages include:
- Broad parts availability
- Familiar installation procedures
- Straightforward bearing replacement
- Reduced dependence on press-fit tolerances
- Compatibility with threaded SRAM DUB bottom brackets
This is particularly valuable on a gravel bike exposed to water, mud, fine dust and repeated cleaning.
Universal Derailleur Hanger
- The frame uses the Universal Derailleur Hanger interface.
- The SRAM RED XPLR Full-Mount derailleur attaches through this area without using a conventional hanger during normal operation.
- The frame can also support selected alternative drivetrains through the appropriate Universal Derailleur Hanger arrangement, subject to complete system compatibility.
Large Tyre Clearance
The Cannondale SuperX LAB71 accepts measured tyres up to 48mm at the frame and 51mm at the fork while retaining at least 4mm of surrounding clearance.
This allows the bike to be configured for:
- Fast hardpack racing
- Loose gravel
- Corrugations
- Sandy tracks
- Mud
- Broken country roads
- Rough descents
- Cyclocross
Actual tyre width depends on rim width, casing design and pressure. A tyre labelled 48mm may exceed the frame limit when fitted to a broad rim.
Clearance must be checked after installation and inflation, with additional room allowed when sticky mud or embedded stones are expected.
Cyclocross Capability
- The Cannondale SuperX LAB71 retains practical features from Cannondale’s cyclocross heritage.
- A flattened top tube makes carrying the bike over barriers and run-ups easier, while the responsive handling suits tight corners, repeated acceleration and rapid braking.
- Using 33mm cyclocross tyres provides extensive mud clearance, making the bike viable for competition between the tape as well as long-distance gravel racing.
