Wide carbon rim platform
The Drive G50 SS uses a 30mm internal and 37mm external rim profile developed for modern high-volume gravel tyres. The wider tyre bed supports the tyre casing more effectively than a narrow road-style rim, reducing the tendency for a large tyre to fold or feel vague during hard cornering.
Better casing support can also allow suitably selected tubeless tyres to operate at lower pressures. This improves mechanical grip, comfort and control on washboard gravel, loose corners and rocky tracks.
The correct pressure still depends on rider weight, tyre construction, terrain and whether inserts are fitted. Riders should always observe the pressure limits printed on the rim and tyre.
Hooked tubeless-ready construction
A hooked bead provides positive mechanical retention for compatible clincher and tubeless tyres. This makes the wheelset suitable for riders who want the efficiency and puncture-sealing benefits of tubeless gravel tyres without moving to a hookless rim interface.
Installed rim tape and valves simplify the initial tubeless conversion. Sealant, tyres and any required valve accessories may need to be purchased separately.
50mm aerodynamic profile
The 50mm rim provides a deeper aerodynamic profile than conventional shallow gravel wheels. The greatest benefit is likely to appear on fast gravel sectors, sealed-road transitions and exposed race courses where the rider can maintain higher speeds.
The wide 37mm external profile should create a more natural transition to high-volume tyres than a narrow road rim. However, the aerodynamic result will vary with the fitted tyre, pressure, tread and airflow conditions.
Australian riders frequently encountering strong crosswinds should consider the handling implications of a 50mm front rim. Skilled riders will generally appreciate the additional speed potential, but a shallower wheel may feel calmer on highly exposed routes.
Alpina Ultralite Aero steel spokes
The steel spokes are a key point of difference. Carbon spokes can reduce weight and increase directness, but high-quality steel spokes provide a familiar combination of fatigue resistance, vibration damping and serviceability.
Alpina Ultralite Aero spokes have a flattened profile intended to reduce aerodynamic drag while maintaining the practical advantages of steel. A competent wheel builder is also more likely to be able to source or adapt a conventional steel-spoke repair during travel than replace a proprietary carbon spoke.
Optimised 2:1 spoke arrangement
The front wheel uses 21 spokes, while the rear uses 24. The 2:1 arrangement places additional spokes on the more heavily loaded side of each wheel, helping balance spoke tension across the asymmetric forces created by disc brakes and the rear drivetrain.
More balanced tension can improve lateral stiffness, power transfer and long-term wheel stability without requiring an excessive total spoke count.
Sapim Secure Lock nipples
Sapim Secure Lock nipples help resist loosening as the wheel experiences repeated vibration and impact. They are valuable on gravel wheels, where spoke tension can be challenged by corrugations, potholes and high-frequency surface vibration.
Elitewheels offers an optional brass nipple upgrade. Brass nipples normally add a small amount of weight but may offer better long-term corrosion resistance and easier servicing in wet or coastal environments than lightweight alloy nipples.
One-piece titanium freehub
The freehub body and 60-tooth ratchet are machined as an integrated titanium component. Titanium offers high strength, excellent corrosion resistance and better resistance to cassette marking than softer aluminium freehub bodies.
This construction is particularly relevant for Australian gravel riding, where fine dust, mud, creek crossings and long service intervals can place extra demands on rear-hub components.
Rapid six-degree engagement
A 60-tooth ratchet provides a six-degree engagement angle. This limits the amount of crank rotation before the freehub engages, creating a responsive feel when accelerating out of corners, restarting on a steep climb or applying power through uneven terrain.
Fast engagement is useful on technical gravel, although riders should still use smooth pedal input when riding over loose or low-traction surfaces.
TPI steel bearings
TPI steel bearings prioritise proven performance, durability and practical replacement rather than the reduced seal drag sometimes associated with ceramic bearings. Correct bearing preload and regular inspection remain important, particularly after wet, muddy or high-pressure washing.
Testing and validation
Elitewheels states that the Drive G50 SS undergoes more than 20 laboratory tests covering stiffness, durability and longevity. The wheelset has also passed the UCI vertical impact test and is approved for competition use.
