Hollowtech II
Shimano Hollowtech II places the crank axle on the drive-side crank arm and positions the bottom bracket bearings outside the frame shell. This arrangement creates a broad bearing stance that supports efficient power transfer while allowing Shimano to use a lightweight 24mm hollow steel axle.
The design separates the left crank arm from the axle, allowing bearing preload to be adjusted before the crank-arm pinch bolts are tightened. When installed correctly, it provides smooth rotation, good lateral stiffness and straightforward workshop servicing.
Hollow forged aluminium crank arms
The Shimano 105 FC-R7100 Crankset uses hollow aluminium crank arms to remove material from areas where it is not structurally necessary. This reduces weight without giving up the stiffness required during hard accelerations, seated climbing and high-torque efforts.
The result is a crankset that feels responsive under power without moving into the significantly higher price range associated with Ultegra, Dura-Ace or aftermarket carbon cranksets.
Hollowglide chainring construction
The large chainring uses Shimano’s Hollowglide design principles to balance low weight, stiffness and controlled front shifting. Reinforcing ribs on the rear of the chainring help maintain rigidity as the chain moves between rings.
A stiff outer chainring is important because excessive flex can slow the shift or allow the chain to rub under heavy pedalling. The Shimano design helps the chain climb quickly and predictably onto the outer ring when paired with a correctly installed front derailleur.
Optimised 12-speed tooth profiles
The chainring teeth, shift ramps and pickup features are designed around Shimano’s 12-speed road chain. Their positioning helps guide the chain during front shifts, including shifts performed while climbing or accelerating.
For the best result, riders should use a genuine compatible Shimano chain, the correct front derailleur and a properly aligned derailleur mounting tab. Even a high-quality crankset can shift poorly if the derailleur height, cage angle or support bolt is incorrectly adjusted.
