(more details...)

The Shimano GRX RX827 Di2 Groupset is Shimano’s first fully wireless electronic 1x12-speed gravel drivetrain. It combines gravel-specific drop-bar controls with a robust wireless rear derailleur derived from Shimano’s latest mountain bike technology.

Unlike the semi-wireless GRX RX825 2x12 system, the Shimano GRX RX827 Di2 does not use a frame-mounted BT-DN300 battery or an SD300 wire between the battery and rear derailleur. The removable battery is housed inside the rear derailleur, eliminating drivetrain wiring and making the system suitable for frames without dedicated Di2 battery mounts or internal electronic-wire routing.

• The frame must support a 1x crankset and GRX chainline
• The bottom bracket must suit the frame shell and Shimano’s 24mm crank spindle
• The frame and fork must use compatible flat mount brake interfaces
• Rotor size must be approved by the frame and fork manufacturers
• The chain must be sized for the selected chainring and 10-51T cassette
• The rear derailleur hanger must be correctly aligned
• UDH is supported but not mandatory
• No internal Di2 battery mount or electronic cable route is required

Fully Wireless Shimano Di2

The Shimano GRX RX827 Di2 transmits shift commands wirelessly from the handlebar controls to the rear derailleur. The derailleur contains the system receiver, electronic motor and removable rechargeable battery, eliminating the need for an internal main battery and E-Tube wiring through the frame.

This architecture simplifies installation on new and existing gravel bikes. It is especially useful for frames with difficult internal routing or no dedicated Di2 battery location.

The derailleur battery is removed for charging in the supplied external charger. Carrying a charged spare battery can provide additional security during multi-day events and remote bikepacking trips.

Shimano Shadow ES

Shadow ES is a lower-profile and more impact-resistant development of Shimano’s chain-stabilising Shadow derailleur concept. The wedge-shaped derailleur body reduces exposed edges that could catch on rocks, branches or trail debris.

A tucked-away stabilising mechanism manages chain tension over rough terrain, helping reduce chain slap, noise and accidental chain loss.

Automatic Impact Recovery

The rear derailleur motor can disengage momentarily when subjected to a strong impact. This allows the mechanism to move rather than resist the entire force of a rock strike.

After the impact, the system automatically returns the derailleur to its indexed position. This can allow the rider to continue without manually resetting the derailleur, although the hanger, cage and drivetrain should still be inspected after a substantial collision.

Protected Removable Battery

The BT-DN320 battery sits inside a protected section of the rear derailleur rather than hanging from an exposed external rail. This reduces the likelihood of the battery moving or disconnecting over harsh corrugations and repeated impacts.

The battery remains removable without disturbing the derailleur or frame. It can be charged away from the bicycle, making the system more convenient for travel and bicycle storage.

Robust Derailleur Construction

The Shimano GRX RX827 rear derailleur uses a wide link structure, aluminium outer components, a protective skid-plate design and solid pulley wheels. These features prioritise resistance to impact and long-term performance over minimum component weight.

The derailleur is heavier than a road-oriented Di2 unit, but the additional mass supports its intended use on rough gravel, remote roads and light trail terrain.

Hyperglide+ Shifting

Hyperglide+ uses specially shaped cassette sprockets and chain profiles to guide the chain during upshifts and downshifts. The system is designed to retain fast shifting when the rider continues applying force through the pedals.

This is particularly useful on loose climbs, where reducing pedal pressure can cause the rear tyre to lose momentum or traction.

Wide-Range 10-51T Cassette

The 10-51T cassette delivers a 510% range, giving the groupset both a small 10T sprocket for high-speed riding and a large 51T sprocket for steep climbing.

When paired with a 40T chainring, the lowest ratio is approximately 0.78:1. A 42T chainring produces a lowest ratio of approximately 0.82:1.

Both combinations offer substantially easier climbing gears than the 11-36T cassette used in close-ratio RX825-based conversions. The trade-off is a larger step between some gears.

GRX-Specific Ergonomics

The GRX lever bodies feature elevated hood heads that provide a secure point against which the hands can brace over rough surfaces. Textured hood rubber and anti-slip brake lever coatings improve grip in wet, dusty and humid conditions.

The hood shape is designed to integrate with modern flared gravel handlebars, increasing hand support and control when descending from the hoods.

Servo Wave Hydraulic Braking

Servo Wave moves the brake pads rapidly towards the rotor during the first part of the lever stroke. The remainder of the movement provides progressive braking control as pressure increases.

This creates a responsive initial bite while helping the rider regulate braking force on loose gravel, wet roads and steep descents.

Hollowtech II Crank Construction

The compatible Shimano GRX crankset uses a two-piece Hollowtech II structure with an integrated 24mm spindle. This design balances stiffness, weight and broad bottom-bracket compatibility.

A suitable bottom bracket must be selected for the bicycle’s threaded or press-fit shell. The bottom bracket may not be included with every groupset package.

Crank length

Depending on the selected package and available crankset, common options may include:

• 160mm
• 165mm
• 170mm
• 172.5mm
• 175mm

Crank length should be selected according to the rider’s bicycle fit, hip mobility, leg proportions and terrain rather than height alone.

Shorter cranks can reduce hip flexion and improve pedal clearance. Longer cranks do not automatically produce more useful power and should not be chosen without considering fit.

Chainring size

Common Shimano GRX RX820-1 options include:

• 40T
• 42T

Some retailer-created packages may offer additional compatible aftermarket or alternative Shimano chainring sizes. Exact compatibility should be confirmed before ordering.

Gear ratios with a 10-51T cassette

40T chainring:

• Highest ratio: 40 ÷ 10 = 4.00
• Lowest ratio: 40 ÷ 51 = 0.78
• Best suited to: Steep terrain, adventure riding and loaded gravel use

42T chainring:

• Highest ratio: 42 ÷ 10 = 4.20
• Lowest ratio: 42 ÷ 51 = 0.82
• Best suited to: Faster gravel racing, stronger riders and mixed road use

Both configurations provide a 510% cassette range.

Freehub fit

• Required freehub: Shimano Micro Spline
• Standard HG road freehub: Not compatible with the 10-51T cassette
• SRAM XDR freehub: Not compatible
• Freehub conversion availability: Wheel and hub dependent

Before purchasing, determine whether the existing rear hub accepts a Micro Spline freehub body. Some wheels can be converted with a replacement driver, while others require a different rear wheel or hub.

Brake fit

• Caliper format: Flat mount
• Common front rotor: 160mm
• Common rear rotor: 160mm
• Rotor size must be approved by the frame and fork manufacturer
• A rear adapter may be required for a 160mm rotor
• Brake-hose length must be cut to suit the bicycle
• Integrated handlebars may require complete hose routing through the cockpit

Frame compatibility

The system is suitable for many current and older gravel frames because it does not require internal electronic wiring. The bicycle still needs:

• Correct rear derailleur hanger alignment
• Clearance for the selected chainring
• A compatible 24mm-spindle bottom bracket
• Flat mount brake interfaces
• Suitable rotor clearance
• A Micro Spline rear freehub
• Adequate chain clearance in the 10T and 51T sprockets

The Shimano GRX RX827 Di2 Groupset is best suited to gravel racers, adventure riders and bikepackers who want a clean wireless drivetrain with genuinely low climbing gears for varied terrain.

Cyclist published its Shimano GRX RX827 review on 26 March 2026 after testing the complete 1x12-speed wireless drivetrain. Reviewer Sam Challis praised the accurate shifting, smooth chain stabilisation, protected removable battery and broad 510% gearing range. The review found the system dependable and well suited to riders who prioritise climbing capability and drivetrain security.

Its main criticism concerned the large ratio changes created by spreading 12 sprockets across a 10-51T cassette. Riders sensitive to cadence changes may notice the larger jumps, particularly when riding quickly on flatter roads. Cyclist also observed that Shimano did not offer a direct ultra-premium equivalent to SRAM Red XPLR AXS.

GRAN FONDO Cycling Magazine published its first ride and technical review on 20 September 2025. Reviewer Jan Fock welcomed the removal of drivetrain wiring and found the installation significantly cleaner than the earlier semi-wireless GRX architecture. The protected battery, low-profile derailleur shape and impact-recovery system were considered particularly relevant to real gravel riding rather than technology included purely for marketing value.

GRAN FONDO recorded Shimano’s estimated battery range at approximately 700 to 1,000km, depending on shifting frequency, terrain and riding style. Actual range can vary substantially, so riders should check battery status before long or remote events.
