Notable Tech, Materials & Construction

Shimano Di2 wireless shifting

The Shimano 105 Di2 R7170 Shift Brake Lever Set transmits shift commands wirelessly to the compatible rear derailleur. This removes electronic wires from the handlebar area, improves cockpit appearance and simplifies routing through integrated handlebars and internally routed frames.

Each control uses two readily available CR1632 coin batteries. Shimano claims a typical operating life of approximately 3.5 to 4 years, although actual life depends on shift frequency, storage conditions, temperature and battery quality.

Dual Control Lever design

Shimano’s Dual Control Lever system integrates electronic gear selection and hydraulic braking into one road-bike control. Separate shift buttons allow riders to move up or down the cassette without releasing their grip on the hood or drop.

The electronic buttons require much less movement than a mechanical shift lever, which can benefit riders with smaller hands, reduced hand strength or fatigue during long-distance events.

E-TUBE PROJECT customisation

Compatible shift-button functions can be changed through Shimano E-TUBE PROJECT Cyclist. Riders can reverse the standard button arrangement, configure multi-shift behaviour and manage drivetrain settings according to personal preference.

The controls can also work with Shimano Full Synchronized Shift and Semi-Synchronized Shift when used as part of a complete compatible Di2 system. These modes coordinate front and rear gear changes to help reduce sudden changes in cadence.

Ergonomic hood construction

The controls use a raised hood peak and an extended upper body to increase hand support. The shape provides a secure position during seated climbing and helps spread pressure across the hand on long rides.

Reach adjustment allows the lever blade to be positioned closer to or farther from the handlebar. This can improve braking confidence for riders with smaller hands and make the lever easier to access from the drops.

Unlike Shimano Ultegra and Dura-Ace 12-speed controls, the Shimano 105 Di2 levers do not include an additional programmable hood-top button or ports for satellite sprint and climbing switches.

Size, Fit, Geometry & Measurements

Handlebar compatibility

The Shimano 105 Di2 controls fit standard modern road handlebars with a clamping diameter of 23.8mm to 24.2mm at the lever mounting area.

Handlebar compatibility should be confirmed when using highly shaped carbon handlebars or one-piece integrated cockpits. The handlebar manufacturer’s clamp-position markings and torque limits must be followed.

Lever reach

Reach adjustment allows the distance between the lever blade and handlebar to be reduced or increased. This makes the controls suitable for a broad range of hand sizes and helps riders achieve confident braking from both the hoods and drops.

Reach adjustment changes lever position but does not correct an unsuitable handlebar. Riders struggling to reach the brake levers may also benefit from a shorter-reach handlebar or a professional bike fit.

Brake caliper fit

  • Caliper mounting standard: Flat Mount
  • Front installation: Usually requires the appropriate adapter for the selected rotor diameter
  • Rear installation: Requires fixing bolts matched to the frame’s chainstay thickness
  • Common rotor sizes: 140mm or 160mm, subject to frame and fork approval
  • Recommended general-purpose arrangement: 160mm front and 140mm or 160mm rear
  • Heavy riders and riders tackling long descents may prefer 160mm front and rear where the frame and fork permit

Flat Mount bolts are available in different lengths. Using bolts that are too short may not provide adequate thread engagement, while bolts that are too long can bottom out or damage the frame.

Brake hose fit

Front and rear brake hoses must be cut to suit the bicycle’s frame size, handlebar width and internal routing. Integrated road cockpits may require additional workshop time because the hoses need to pass through the handlebar, stem and frame.

Who it is best suited for and where it is best suited

The Shimano 105 Di2 R7170 Shift Brake Lever Set is ideal for road cyclists upgrading to electronic shifting or replacing damaged controls and calipers on a compatible 105 Di2 bike. The supportive hood shape works particularly well for long endurance rides.

Product Care & Warranty Info

Product care

  • Clean the controls, hood covers and calipers with a soft cloth and bicycle-safe cleaner.
  • Remove perspiration from the lever bodies and handlebar area after hot rides.
  • Do not use petroleum-based cleaners near the brake pads, rotors or caliper pistons.
  • Avoid touching the braking surfaces with bare or contaminated hands.
  • Keep the brake rotors and pads free from chain lubricant, degreaser and silicone spray.
  • Check brake-pad thickness regularly and replace worn pads before the backing plate reaches the rotor.
  • Inspect rotors for contamination, excessive wear, heat damage and distortion.
  • Check the brake hoses for abrasion, kinks or leaks.
  • Confirm that the charging and diagnostic port covers remain clean and secure.
  • Replace the CR1632 control batteries in matched pairs using reputable batteries.
  • Use Shimano E-TUBE PROJECT Cyclist to monitor pairing and configure button functions.
  • Bleed the brakes with genuine Shimano mineral oil only.
  • Never use DOT brake fluid in Shimano hydraulic brakes.
  • Have internally routed hoses installed by an experienced road bike mechanic.
  • Check lever clamp and caliper mounting torque after initial installation.
  • Bed in new brake pads and rotors using a series of controlled stops before demanding riding.

Firmware servicing

Normal wireless shifting does not require the controls to be connected by wire. However, lever firmware updates may require a temporary wired connection to a compatible Shimano Di2 system or professional diagnostic equipment.

If an update is required, a Shimano Di2 workshop can connect and service the controls using the appropriate SD300 equipment.

Warranty

Shimano Australia provides a two-year limited warranty to the original retail purchaser for eligible Shimano bicycle components purchased new in Australia.

Industry & Rider Feedback. A few Comparison Options

CycleTechReview published a long-term review on 9 July 2024 after using Shimano 105 Di2 for road, cyclocross, gravel and commuting duties. The reviewer praised the amount of braking power available with limited hand effort and found the wider pad clearance reduced the likelihood of rotor rub. The system was ultimately described as a capable do-it-all groupset after extended ownership changed the reviewer’s earlier scepticism about electronic shifting.

Shimano Ultegra Di2 ST-R8170 and BR-R8170

Ultegra adds lighter controls, Servo Wave braking, programmable hood-top buttons and satellite-shifter compatibility. It is better suited to performance builds, racing and bikes using climbing or sprint switches.

The Shimano 105 Di2 set delivers the same fundamental 12-speed wireless control concept and excellent hydraulic braking at a lower price. Its controls are slightly heavier and less expandable, but the practical performance gap is relatively small for most riders.

Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 ST-R9270 and BR-R9270

Dura-Ace is Shimano’s lowest-weight and most expensive road option. It includes premium materials, Servo Wave braking and greater control-button flexibility.

The Shimano 105 Di2 set is the stronger value choice for regular riding, training and amateur racing. Dura-Ace is most appropriate where minimum system weight and flagship specification justify the substantially higher cost.
