Full Mount hangerless construction

The SRAM RED XPLR AXS E1 Rear Derailleur mounts directly to both sides of the frame’s rear dropout and is secured around the rear wheel axle. This eliminates the separate derailleur hanger found on most traditional road and gravel bikes.

Referencing the derailleur position directly from the rear axle creates a repeatable relationship between the derailleur, cassette and wheel. It also removes a conventional hanger that can flex, rotate or bend and disturb indexing.

The Full Mount structure distributes impact loads around the axle instead of concentrating them through a small hanger bolt. This makes the system especially relevant to gravel bikes exposed to rocks, branches, deep ruts and transport damage. It does not make the derailleur indestructible, but it is designed to withstand and recover from impacts better than a lightweight road-style mounting arrangement.

Simplified screw-free adjustment

The derailleur does not use conventional high-limit, low-limit or B-tension adjustment screws. Its position is governed by the Full Mount interface, matched cassette and prescribed installation process.

Removing these adjustments reduces the number of settings that can drift or be incorrectly configured. Precise installation remains essential, particularly when establishing chain length and completing the initial setup sequence.

Magic Wheel lower pulley

The Magic Wheel lower pulley uses a two-part design that allows the outer toothed section to continue rotating around the inner section if an object becomes trapped in the pulley.

This means a small stick or piece of debris is less likely to lock the lower pulley completely and drag the derailleur into the wheel. Riders should still stop and remove any lodged debris as soon as it is safe. Magic Wheel is a damage-mitigation feature, not permission to continue riding indefinitely with an obstruction.

MTB-inspired spring clutch

The derailleur uses a strong spring clutch to control forward cage movement and reduce chain bounce. It is derived from SRAM’s experience with mountain bike Transmission drivetrains rather than the lighter Orbit fluid damper used on SRAM’s conventional road derailleurs.

Crank and chainstay compatibility

SRAM provides different crank guidance according to chainstay length:

Industry Feedback, Rider Reviews and our own opinion

Velo published its review of the SRAM RED XPLR AXS 1x13 groupset on 1 August 2024 and regarded the system as a new benchmark for performance gravel drivetrains. The review highlighted the combination of close cassette spacing, increased range and Full Mount derailleur stability. Its most significant advantage was not simply the thirteenth sprocket, but the ability to offer useful climbing range without the large jumps normally associated with a wide-range 1x gravel cassette.

DC Rainmaker published an in-depth review on 1 August 2024 after approximately one month of testing across varied terrain, including a multi-day mountain trip. The review identified the move from a modified road-style derailleur to a Transmission-influenced Full Mount design as the most important change. It also reported that the complete power-meter groupset weighed approximately 2,488 grams, although the high price and UDH frame requirement substantially limited the number of existing bicycles that could receive the upgrade.

The Radavist published Josh Weinberg’s review on 1 August 2024 after assessing the drivetrain from a racing and durability perspective. The review found that SRAM had effectively transferred its mountain bike Full Mount concept into a lighter gravel package, producing a derailleur aimed at riders who need race-level shifting without treating rough-course resilience as an afterthought

Product Care & Warranty Info

Routine cleaning

  • Wash the derailleur with mild bicycle cleaner, clean water and a soft brush.
  • Remove dust, grass and compacted mud from the cage and pulleys.
  • Do not direct high-pressure water at the pivots, bearings, motor housing or battery contacts.
  • Dry the component after wet rides and creek crossings.
  • Remove excess chain lubricant before it attracts abrasive dust.
  • Avoid aggressive solvents around the seals and electronic housing.

Magic Wheel inspection

  • Check the lower pulley after rides through sticks, long grass or loose debris.
  • Remove trapped material before it damages the pulley or chain.
  • Confirm that both parts of the pulley rotate correctly.
  • Inspect the pulley teeth for chips and abnormal wear.
  • Do not dismantle the mechanism without following SRAM’s service procedure.
  • Replace damaged pulley components with approved SRAM parts.

Chain and cassette care
