Bead-to-Bead Shield

Michelin’s Bead-to-Bead Shield reinforces the tyre across the complete casing rather than protecting only the central tread area. This construction helps reduce vulnerability to punctures, sharp stones and sidewall cuts when riding on gravel roads, rocky fire trails and debris-covered road shoulders.

Full-casing reinforcement is particularly useful for Australian gravel riding, where surfaces can change quickly from smooth hardpack to exposed rock, corrugations and sharp-edged gravel. It also provides additional reassurance for bikepacking, where luggage increases the total load placed on the tyres.

3 x 120 TPI Casing

The multi-layer 3 x 120 TPI casing is designed to balance flexibility, support and protection. A flexible casing allows the tyre to deform around smaller stones and surface irregularities, helping it maintain traction while improving comfort over broken ground.

The reinforced construction is more durable than a lightweight gravel racing casing. This makes the Michelin Power Gravel Competition Line better suited to training, exploration, commuting and high-mileage adventure riding where reliability is more important than saving a small amount of rotating weight.

Gravel-Specific Rubber Compound

The tread compound is developed to provide durable performance across sealed roads and unsealed terrain. It is intended to resist accelerated wear during regular bitumen use while retaining useful traction on gravel roads, forest tracks and dry trails.

This balance is valuable for Australian riders who often cover extended sealed-road sections before reaching gravel. A softer competition-only compound may provide greater immediate grip but can wear more quickly when regularly ridden on asphalt.

Gravel Design Tread Pattern

The tread uses small, closely arranged blocks through the centre to reduce vibration and rolling drag on firm surfaces. More pronounced shoulder blocks provide additional mechanical grip while cornering or riding across loose terrain.

The transition between the centre and shoulder tread helps the tyre remain predictable as the bike leans into a turn. It performs particularly well on dry gravel, hardpack, rail trails and dusty tracks, although its moderate tread depth is not designed for deep mud or highly technical mountain bike terrain.

Tubeless-Ready Construction

Tubeless installation allows the Michelin Power Gravel Competition Line to operate at lower pressures than a conventional tyre and inner-tube setup. Lower pressure helps the casing conform to rough ground, increasing comfort, traction and control.

Liquid tubeless sealant can automatically close many small punctures caused by thorns, wire and sharp gravel. Removing the inner tube also reduces the risk of conventional pinch flats, although rim strikes and casing damage remain possible if pressure is set too low.

The tyre may also be used with a compatible inner tube if a tubeless setup is not preferred.

Hookless Compatibility

Current Michelin specifications identify compatible Power Gravel variants for use with suitable hooked and hookless rims. Riders must confirm that the selected tyre width is approved by the wheel manufacturer and observe the lowest maximum pressure stated by either the tyre or rim manufacturer.

700 x 40C

ETRTO size: 40-622
Nominal width: 40mm
Approximate claimed weight: 490g
Recommended use: General gravel riding, endurance events, rail trails and mixed-surface touring

For many Australian gravel riders, the 40mm version offers the most versatile balance of speed, comfort, protection and loose-surface control.

700 x 47C

ETRTO size: 47-622
Nominal width: 47mm
Recommended use: Rough gravel, bikepacking, corrugated roads and riders prioritising stability

The 47mm version provides a larger contact patch and greater air volume, improving comfort, flotation and confidence on loose or uneven terrain.

The Michelin Power Gravel Competition Line is best suited to gravel cyclists, all-road riders, bikepackers and adventurous commuters who value dependable grip and puncture protection more than outright race-day speed.

Tubeless installation

Use compatible tubeless-ready wheels, correctly fitted rim tape, suitable tubeless valves and fresh bicycle tyre sealant. Confirm that the selected tyre width is approved for the rim and that sufficient frame clearance is available.

Do not exceed the tyre or rim manufacturer’s maximum pressure when seating the bead. Professional tubeless installation is recommended if the tyre cannot be fitted and seated safely with appropriate workshop equipment.

Sealant maintenance

Inspect the sealant approximately every two to four months. Hot and dry Australian conditions can accelerate evaporation, so more frequent inspections may be necessary during summer or in arid regions.

Top up or replace the sealant according to its manufacturer’s recommendations. Dried sealant may no longer close small punctures effectively.

Tyre pressure

Check tyre pressure before every ride and adjust it according to tyre size, rider weight, luggage, rim width and surface conditions.

Excessive pressure can reduce gravel grip and comfort. Insufficient pressure may cause rim strikes, casing damage, instability or air loss during hard cornering.

Cleaning and inspection

Clean the tyre using water, mild bicycle wash and a soft brush. Avoid petroleum-based solvents, aggressive degreasers and abrasive cleaning products.

Inspect the tread and sidewalls for cuts, exposed casing, embedded objects and recurring sealant leakage. Replace the tyre if the casing becomes visible or structural damage cannot be safely repaired.

GRAN FONDO Cycling Magazine, 5 May 2026

GRAN FONDO included the Michelin Power Gravel in its 2026 gravel tyre group test. The publication praised the 40mm test sample for its high level of grip and the way its tread and relatively compliant rubber conformed to changing surfaces.

The sample weighed approximately 515g and measured close to 42mm on the publication’s 25mm internal-width test rim. Its rolling-resistance result was slower than the group average, indicating that traction and protection receive greater priority than maximum race efficiency.

The review nevertheless found its combination of strong grip and reasonable weight convincing for demanding gravel riding. It was viewed as a capable choice for riders who prefer predictable handling and protection over the lowest possible rolling resistance.

Continental Terra Trail ProTection

The Continental Terra Trail ProTection is a more aggressively treaded option for riders who spend a greater proportion of their time on loose or technical gravel.

Pros:

More pronounced side knobs
Strong loose-surface cornering grip
Supple premium casing
Effective tubeless performance

Cons:

Can feel slower on sealed roads
More tread than necessary for smooth hardpack
Generally positioned at a premium price

Michelin difference:

The Michelin Power Gravel Competition Line provides a more road-friendly central tread and places strong emphasis on full-casing protection. The Continental is better suited to loose and technical gravel, while the Michelin is a more balanced option for routes containing regular sealed-road sections.

Schwalbe G-One Allround

The Schwalbe G-One Allround is designed for riders who want smooth performance across roads, cycle paths and well-maintained gravel.

Pros:

Predictable all-round handling

Good for rail trail touring

Our standard tire for touring. 2 long trips now, C&O/GAP and then Erie Canal. We run tubeless, and have our local Trek shop mount them. They do wear sorta fast (-0.5 stars if I could), but they are a little cheaper than Sch***le G-One and we haven't had any flats at all.

great tire for a gravel bike

Just put these on my Lynskey Ti gravel bike. They track well, not to bad on sandy surfaces. Fast and smooth on standard gravel surfaces and pavement.

Great so far

I have only had them a short while. But so far they are great. Tubeless setup was a cinch. They are grippy going into flat gravel corners. They are fast rolling. Only time will tell if they are durable. There mid range $. There is no such thing as a good value in high end bike tires. They are all too expensive.

great on/off road tires.

put these on a new 9er gravel bike . have ridden them about three times, on a mix of dirt, gravel , and asphalt, and they have performed better than i expected. only question is how long they will last. highly recommend these tires. great tires, especially for the price.

Solid

Great tire! I use it as a rear on my cyclocross bike and have used it in one race so far that was 100% grass. It performed really well and was a nice rolling tire in the short and tall grass. For training I am primarily on forest service roads that are dirt and loose gravel. It has worked really well (180 miles) and shows no signs of wear.Setting up tubeless took a few shots from my airshot and has been solid since with little burping and zero flats.
