Required supporting components

  • Compatible Shimano 12-speed road Di2 rear derailleur
  • Shimano BT-DN300 internal battery
  • Shimano EW-SD300 electrical wire
  • Compatible Shimano 12-speed HG chain
  • Compatible 50-34T or 52-36T road double crankset
  • Braze-on front derailleur mounting point or correctly sized clamp adapter
  • Shimano E-TUBE PROJECT Cyclist app for configuration and firmware management

The front derailleur is not a self-contained wireless component. It must be connected by an EW-SD300 wire to the shared Di2 battery. Riders upgrading from an older 11-speed Di2 system should not assume that existing SD50 wiring or batteries will be compatible.

Notable Tech, Materials & Construction

Shimano Di2 electronic shifting

A compact electric motor moves the chain guide between the inner and outer chainrings. Electronic control produces repeatable movement without relying on cable tension, reducing the effect of cable stretch, contamination and housing friction on front-shift quality.

Programmed automatic trim

The derailleur communicates with the rest of the Di2 system and automatically adjusts its chain-guide position as the rider changes rear gears. This helps maintain chain clearance across the cassette, reducing distracting chain rub and removing the need for manual trim inputs commonly required with mechanical front shifting.

Synchronized Shift

Three operating approaches are available:

  • Manual mode gives the rider direct control over front and rear shifts.
  • Semi-Synchronized Shift automatically compensates with one or more rear shifts after the rider changes chainrings, helping reduce the sudden cadence change.
  • Full Synchronized Shift lets the system initiate front shifts at configurable points as the rider progresses through the cassette.

Shift behaviour can be customised through Shimano E-TUBE PROJECT Cyclist. Full Synchronized Shift does not monitor road speed or cadence to choose gears independently. It follows defined shift points based on drivetrain position.

Semi-wireless architecture

The R7150 system combines wireless shift controls with wired connections between the internal battery and both derailleurs. This arrangement produces a clean handlebar area while giving the higher-power derailleur motors a stable central power source.

Size, Fit, Geometry & Measurements

Mounting

The Shimano 105 Di2 Front Derailleur uses a braze-on mount. A road frame with an integrated front derailleur tab can accept the unit directly, subject to correct alignment and adjustment. Frames with a conventional round seat tube require a suitable Shimano clamp adapter purchased separately.

Compatible drivetrain geometry

  • Chainline: 44.5mm
  • Chainstay angle: 61 to 66 degrees
  • Outer chainring range: 50T to 52T
  • Maximum chainring difference: 16T
  • Supported chainring combinations: Primarily 50-34T and 52-36T
  • Front drivetrain: Double only
  • Rear drivetrain: Shimano-compatible 12-speed Di2 road system
  • Mount type: Braze-on

Correct derailleur height, cage angle, support-bolt contact, limit adjustment and frame compatibility are essential. Poor positioning can cause slow shifts, chain noise or chain loss even when the electronic adjustment is correct.

The 44.5mm chainline is intended for Shimano road double cranksets. It is not designed for Shimano GRX Wide chainlines or arbitrary third-party crank combinations.

Who it is best suited for and where it is best suited

The Shimano 105 Di2 Front Derailleur is ideal for road cyclists who want dependable electronic shifting without paying the premium associated with Dura-Ace or Ultegra components. It is particularly well suited to riders using a modern 2x12-speed road bike.

Product Care & Warranty Info

Product care

  • Clean the derailleur with a soft brush, damp cloth and bicycle-safe cleaner.
  • Remove dried sports drink, road salt, perspiration and abrasive grit from the body and chain guide.
  • Do not direct high-pressure water at the motor housing, wire port or electrical connection.
  • Inspect the EW-SD300 wire for pinching, abrasion or incomplete engagement.
  • Keep the chain clean and correctly lubricated to reduce noise and wear against the derailleur cage.
  • Check the derailleur mounting bolt, support bolt and cage alignment periodically.
  • Use the correct Shimano E-TUBE tool when connecting or disconnecting SD300 wires.
  • Do not pull an electrical wire by the cable itself.
  • Keep system firmware current through Shimano E-TUBE PROJECT Cyclist.
  • Charge the Di2 system before long rides and cycling events.
  • Have shifting faults assessed by an experienced Shimano Di2 bicycle mechanic.

Electronic adjustment cannot compensate for an incorrectly positioned derailleur, damaged chainring, worn chain or poorly aligned mounting tab. Mechanical fit should be checked before micro-adjustment is attempted.

Warranty

Shimano Australia provides a two-year limited warranty to the original retail purchaser for eligible Shimano bicycle components purchased new in Australia. The warranty covers qualifying defects in materials and workmanship and operates in addition to rights provided by Australian Consumer Law.

Proof of purchase is required. Damage caused by accidents, incorrect installation, unauthorised modification, misuse, poor maintenance or incompatible components may be excluded.

Industry & Rider Feedback. A few Comparison Options

Cyclist Australia/NZ reviewed the complete Shimano 105 Di2 groupset and described it as effectively all the road groupset most cyclists would need. Reviewer Charlotte Head praised the slick electronic shifting, refined presentation and much lower entry price compared with Ultegra Di2. The review also noted that the 105 front derailleur uses an earlier-generation motor architecture rather than the smaller, faster mechanism fitted to the current Ultegra and Dura-Ace models. While this makes the 105 unit larger and its front shift marginally slower, its real-world performance remained precise and dependable. The review was published after the groupset’s 2022 release.

Shimano Ultegra Di2 Front Derailleur

The Ultegra alternative is smaller, lighter and uses a newer front-shifting mechanism. It is the better choice for performance-focused builds where weight, aerodynamics and maximum shift speed justify the additional cost. The Shimano 105 Di2 Front Derailleur remains the stronger value proposition for training, endurance riding and amateur racing because its basic function and system integration are very similar.

Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 Front Derailleur

Dura-Ace is intended for flagship race bikes and riders pursuing the lowest possible weight and fastest available Shimano road shifting. Its price is considerably higher, while the real-world improvement may be difficult for many recreational cyclists to justify. The 105 option is heavier and less compact but provides the core Di2 experience at a more accessible price.
