Spider-based power measurement

The power meter measures torque at the spider, where power from both crankarms enters the chainring. It combines measured torque with cadence to calculate total rider power in watts.

Unlike a basic single-sided crank sensor that measures one leg and doubles the value, the spider receives the combined output generated through both crankarms. It also reports a calculated left-to-right power balance.

Replaceable Thread Mount chainring

The aluminium X-SYNC chainring threads directly onto the power-meter spider using SRAM’s Thread Mount system. This creates a broad, stiff interface while allowing the chainring to be removed independently of the power meter.

SRAM X-SYNC uses alternating wide and narrow teeth corresponding with the chain’s inner and outer links. Tall tooth profiles engage the chain early, while shaped recesses help clear dirt from around the rollers.

Wide DUB construction

The Wide DUB spindle positions the chainring further outboard than a standard road crankset, producing a 47.5mm chainline. This can increase clearance around wide tyres, chainstays and modern gravel-frame structures.

The 28.99mm DUB spindle is designed to balance stiffness, bearing dimensions and sealing. A frame-specific Road Wide DUB bottom bracket is still required.

The bottom bracket must match both the crankset and the bicycle’s shell standard. DUB does not refer to one universal bottom bracket.

Serviceable modular design

The crankarms, power-meter spider and Thread Mount chainring are separate serviceable elements. This improves long-term ownership because the rider can replace a worn chainring without discarding the power meter or carbon crankarms.

Crank length selection

150mm and 155mm

These very short crank lengths can suit smaller riders, cyclists with restricted hip mobility and riders seeking greater clearance through technical corners. They may also help preserve an open hip angle when using an aggressive gravel-racing position.

160mm and 165mm

These increasingly popular lengths can reduce peak hip and knee flexion while supporting a smooth, higher-cadence pedalling style. They also provide greater pedal clearance over rocks, ruts and off-camber corners.

167.5mm and 170mm

These middle-length options suit riders looking for a balance between shorter contemporary fitting trends and traditional road dimensions. The 167.5mm length offers a useful intermediate step between 165mm and 170mm.

172.5mm and 175mm

These longer options suit riders whose leg proportions, mobility and established fit favour a larger pedal circle. Rider height alone should not determine crank length.

Bike-fit considerations

Changing crank length affects the upper and lower positions of the pedal stroke. Moving to a shorter crank normally requires the saddle to be raised by approximately the same amount as the decrease in crank length.

DC Rainmaker published an in-depth review of SRAM’s updated RED AXS power-meter platform on 16 May 2024 after more than two months of testing. Power and cadence data were compared with established reference devices during steady riding, intervals and harder accelerations. The recorded data aligned closely with the comparison units, while ANT+ and Bluetooth connectivity worked reliably with mainstream cycling computers. Although the testing centred on the road version, the XPLR crankset uses the same underlying Quarq measurement approach.

Bikerumor published a detailed first-ride assessment of the SRAM RED XPLR AXS system in August 2024. The publication highlighted the new Thread Mount power-meter crankset as a meaningful serviceability improvement, particularly because chainrings could be replaced without discarding the power-meter spider. It also praised the extensive crank-length range and low system weight.

Routine cleaning

  • Clean the crankset with mild bicycle cleaner, water and a soft cloth.
