Cockpit Guide (2026 Season Update): Kreuza Apex, Cannondale SystemBar, ENVE and BLKTEC Compared - Pedal Passion

Pedal Passion currently offers cockpit systems ranging from the value-focused Kreuza Apex to highly specialised ENVE designs. Cannondale’s SystemBar range provides frame-specific integration for the SuperSix EVO Gen 5, while BLKTEC splits its offering between the aerodynamic R8 and exceptionally light L8.

The most expensive cockpit is not inherently the best. Fit, frame compatibility and intended riding style should come first. A perfectly sized $500 cockpit will deliver better performance than a $2,000 model with the wrong width or stem length.

Current Pedal Passion Cockpit Range

Pedal Passion’s range includes:

  • Kreuza Apex and Apex GR One-Piece Carbon Handlebar at under $500.
  • Cannondale SystemBar Road at approximately $1k.
  • Cannondale SystemBar Road SL at approximately $1,200.
  • Cannondale SystemBar R-One at approximately $1k.
  • BLKTEC R8 and L8 at under $1k.
  • ENVE Compact Road, SES AR and SES Aero separate handlebars at approximately $879.
  • ENVE SES AR One-Piece cockpit at approximately $1,649.
  • ENVE SES Aero Pro One-Piece cockpit at approximately $1,900 on promotion.
  • ENVE SES AR Custom One-Piece cockpit at approximately $1,500 on promotion.

Prices, availability and size combinations can change based on local manufacturer promotions, so watch this space and check back often or simply get in touch. A compatible headset cover or adapter may also be required and should be included in the total build cost.

What Riders Should Consider Before Buying

Establish the Correct Fit First

An integrated cockpit fixes the handlebar and stem into a single component. Unlike a separate stem and handlebar, the relationship between width, reach, stem length and angle cannot be adjusted independently.

A rider should determine:

  • Preferred hood-to-hood width.
  • Required effective stem length.
  • Handlebar reach and drop.
  • Stem angle.
  • Required spacer height.
  • Degree of flare.
  • Actual compatibility with the frame, fork and headset.

Changing to a narrower handlebar can effectively increase functional reach because the rider’s arms move inward and forward. Moving from 42 cm to 36 cm without reconsidering stem length may therefore create a more stretched position than expected.

The handlebar’s stated reach must also be considered. A 120 mm stem connected to a 68 mm-reach bar does not place the controls in the same position as a 120 mm stem with an 83 mm-reach bar.

Width and Aerodynamics

Narrow handlebars can reduce the rider’s frontal area. Because the rider produces most of the total aerodynamic drag, narrowing the shoulder and arm position can provide a larger benefit than small improvements to the bar’s tube profile.

However, narrower is not automatically better. An excessively narrow cockpit can create shoulder, wrist or breathing discomfort. It may also reduce leverage when sprinting or controlling the bike over rough roads.

Flared handlebars provide a compromise. The controls remain relatively narrow for aerodynamic efficiency, while the drops widen to improve leverage and stability.

Internal Routing and Compatibility

A fully integrated cockpit allows the brake hoses and electronic wires to run through the handlebar, stem, headset and frame. This improves appearance and can reduce aerodynamic disturbance, but it also increases installation and maintenance complexity.

Changing stem length may require:

  1. Removing the bar tape and controls.
  2. Disconnecting hydraulic brake hoses.
  3. Pulling the hoses through the cockpit.
  4. Installing the replacement bar.
  5. Reconnecting and bleeding the brakes.
  6. Replacing olives, barbs and potentially hoses.

For this reason, professional fitting before installation is strongly recommended.

Some cockpits use proprietary steering systems. The Cannondale SystemBar Road and Road SL are designed around Cannondale’s Delta Steerer and cannot be assumed to fit conventional frames. ENVE IN-Route bars require compatible headset covers and routing components. Kreuza and BLKTEC support broader frame compatibility through model-specific adapters, but the exact adapter must still be verified.

Kreuza Apex: The Value Leader

The Kreuza Apex is a one-piece T800 carbon cockpit priced at approximately $499.99 through Pedal Passion (plus further discount on bundle deals with evolve framesets). It weighs a claimed 305 grams, with a tolerance of approximately 10 grams, in a painted 380 mm by 110 mm configuration.

Its road geometry includes:

  • Hood widths of 360, 380 and 400 mm.
  • Drop widths of 390, 410 and 430 mm.
  • Stem lengths from 80 to 140 mm.
  • 80 mm reach.
  • 128 mm drop.
  • Approximately 6.6 degrees of flare.
  • A minus-six-degree stem angle.

The range of 21 possible width and stem-length combinations is one of the Apex’s most important advantages. Riders are not forced to accept only two or three pairings.

Aerodynamic Design

Kreuza uses a flattened NACA-inspired upper profile, with the narrowest section measuring approximately 16 mm. The company claims that CFD development found a 4.5-watt reduction in aerodynamic resistance compared with a conventional round handlebar and stem.

That figure is a manufacturer claim. A complete independent protocol describing air speed, yaw angle, control bar, cable configuration and rider presence was not available. Independently verified aerodynamic savings are therefore Information not available.

The more defensible advantage is the narrow size selection. Choosing a 360 mm bar instead of a 400 or 420 mm model can reduce rider frontal area, assuming the position remains sustainable.

Performance and Ride Quality

At 305 grams, the Apex is reasonably light for a one-piece aerodynamic cockpit. It is not as light as the BLKTEC L8 or Cannondale SystemBar Road SL, but it significantly undercuts most premium alternatives in price.

The 80 mm reach and 128 mm drop are conventional enough for racing without forcing an unusually deep lower position. The flare widens the drops by approximately 30 mm overall, improving leverage for sprinting and descending while keeping the controls narrow.

Independent long-term testing is yet to be determined. Early discussions have generally praised appearance, fit options and value, although some riders replaced the supplied computer mount with a heavier-duty alternative for large cycling computers and rough roads.

Warranty and Reliability

Kreuza provides two years of coverage for handlebars supplied with framesets against material and manufacturing defects. Damage caused by excessive clamping torque, crashes, unauthorised modification or incorrect installation is excluded. At Pedal Passion, we handle claims and servicing (as an authorised dealer)

Possible Frameset Pairings

The Kreuza Apex is the natural match for the Evolve CIMA because the standard CIMA headset cover is designed around the Apex. Another cockpit can be fitted, but an appropriate adapter is required.

Adapters are available for other frames, making the Apex a strong value option for:

  • Evolve CIMA.
  • Evolve CIMA GR in a road-oriented setup.
  • TIME NXR.
  • INCOLOR road frames.
  • Selected Cannondale SuperSix EVO generations, subject to adapter match.

The 360 mm version is particularly suitable for riders pursuing an aerodynamic racing position. The 380 and 400 mm options suit riders who need more shoulder room or sprinting leverage.

Kreuza Apex GR: The All-Road Alternative

The Apex GR uses the same broad design philosophy but adapts it for gravel and long-distance riding.

KREUZA Apex GR One-Piece Carbon Handlebar - Pedal Passion

It weighs a claimed 310 grams in a painted 385 mm by 100 mm configuration. Widths range from 360 to 410 mm at the hoods, while stem lengths extend from 80 to 130 mm. It adds 15 mm of rise, a shorter reach and drop, plus approximately 60 mm of additional width at the drops.

The rise can help riders achieve a sustainable long-distance position without using a large spacer stack. The much wider drops provide leverage on loose descents and rough surfaces while keeping the hoods relatively narrow.

The Apex GR is the more suitable Kreuza option for:

  • Evolve CIMA GR.
  • INCOLOR Voyager.
  • ENVE MOG-compatible custom builds, subject to adapter match with model year.
  • Fast gravel bikes using road-like geometry.

Its limitation may be that some gravel riders may prefer even more flare or a separate stem and bar for easier fit experimentation.

Cannondale SystemBar Road: Aerodynamics for the SuperSix EVO

The SystemBar Road is Cannondale’s aerodynamic cockpit for the fifth-generation SuperSix EVO. It uses a one-piece carbon structure, truncated-airfoil tops and full internal routing through the Delta Steerer.

Cannondale SystemBar Road SL Carbon Handlebar - Pedal Passion

Specs:

  • Widths from 340 to 380 mm at the hoods.
  • Stem lengths from 90 to 150 mm, depending on width.
  • 80 mm reach.
  • 130 mm drop.
  • Approximately 40 mm total flare.
  • Minus-six-degree stem angle.
  • Claimed weight of 375 grams.
  • Electronic shifting compatibility only.

Racing and Aerodynamic Performance

The SystemBar Road’s most interesting feature is its progressive sizing. Narrow 340 and 360 mm options allow riders to reduce frontal area, while the drops remain approximately 40 mm wider for leverage.

This approach reflects modern professional racing positions. Riders spend substantial time on the hoods with forearms lowered, then use the wider drops for descending, sprinting and technical cornering.

The flattened upper section is designed to reduce drag and integrates cleanly with the SuperSix EVO’s narrow head tube and Delta Steerer. However, Cannondale has not published a standalone drag figure comparing this cockpit with the Road SL or a conventional bar and stem.

At 375 grams, the SystemBar Road is comparatively heavy for a premium integrated cockpit. That additional mass is partly attributable to its deeper aerodynamic profile and broad range of long, narrow configurations.

Handling Confidence

The one-piece structure should provide high torsional stiffness. This creates a direct relationship between hand input and front-wheel response, which is useful during sprinting and fast descending.

The 40 mm flare helps prevent the narrow hood widths from feeling unstable. A 340 mm hood position paired with approximately 380 mm drops, for example, provides aerodynamic efficiency when cruising but more natural leverage in technical situations.

Ride comfort is likely to be firmer than with a conventional round carbon bar, although tyre volume and pressure will have a much larger effect on total vibration.

Compatibility

This is not a universal aftermarket cockpit. It is designed for Cannondale’s Delta Steerer system and fully hidden hoses. It is also intended for electronic drivetrains rather than mechanical or conventionally wired shifting systems.

Its strongest pairing is the Cannondale SuperSix EVO Gen 5. Attempting to adapt it to unrelated frames would remove much of its integration advantage and may not be technically optimal.

Cannondale SystemBar Road SL: The Climbing Option

The SystemBar Road SL prioritises low weight rather than maximum aerodynamic shaping.

It weighs a claimed 265 grams, approximately 110 grams less than the standard SystemBar Road. It retains:

  • 80 mm reach.
  • 130 mm drop.
  • 40 mm flare.
  • Minus-six-degree stem angle.
  • Delta Steerer compatibility.
  • Full internal routing.
  • Electronic shifting.

Widths are limited to 380 and 400 mm, with stem lengths generally ranging from 90 to 130 mm according to width. The upper section is rounder and more traditional than the standard SystemBar Road.

Road SL vs Standard Road

Choose the SystemBar Road SL if:

  • Low weight is the priority.
  • The build is intended for climbing.
  • A 380 or 400 mm hood width fits correctly.
  • Rounder tops are preferred for sustained climbing.
  • The aerodynamic advantage of a 340 or 360 mm cockpit is not required.

Choose the standard SystemBar Road if:

  • Racing aerodynamics are more important than saving 110 grams.
  • A 340 or 360 mm hood width is required.
  • The rider wants a long stem with a narrow bar.
  • A flattened aero upper profile is preferred.

The Road SL is the natural partner for a lightweight SuperSix EVO LAB71 SL build. The standard Road better supports an aerodynamic SuperSix EVO race configuration.

ENVE: The Most Complete Cockpit Ecosystem

ENVE offers both separate handlebars and integrated systems. This gives riders more freedom than brands that only provide fixed one-piece cockpits.

ENVE SES AR Custom One‑Piece IN‑Route Handlebar Cockpit (various stem/width options) - Pedal Passion

Pedal Passion sells (subject to stock levels, these are definitely more boutique):

  • Compact Road IN-Route.
  • SES AR IN-Route.
  • SES Aero IN-Route.
  • SES AR One-Piece.
  • SES AR Custom One-Piece.
  • SES Aero Pro One-Piece.

The separate bars use a conventional 31.8 mm stem interface while supporting ENVE’s IN-Route internal routing. This allows the stem length and angle to be altered without replacing the handlebar.

ENVE SES Aero IN-Route

The SES Aero is intended for road racing. It uses narrow hood widths with drops approximately 50 mm wider, creating a low-drag position while retaining sprinting and descending control.

Available sizes include:

  • 350 mm hoods with 400 mm drops.
  • 370 mm hoods with 420 mm drops.
  • 390 mm hoods with 440 mm drops.
  • 410 mm hoods with 460 mm drops.

It uses a compact 79 mm reach and 127 mm drop. The bar was developed through CFD and wind-tunnel testing and is compatible with ENVE’s IN-Route system.

The separate design is a major advantage for fitting. A rider can change from a 100 to 110 mm stem without replacing the bar. This is particularly useful during a new custom build when the position may continue to evolve.

ENVE SES AR

The SES AR is intended for all-road, endurance and fast gravel use. It uses an 18-degree compound flare, 76 mm reach and 129 mm drop. The separate bar starts at approximately 243 grams, depending on width.

The wider drops improve leverage on rough surfaces, while the carbon layup is intended to balance steering stiffness with vibration damping. It is a strong match for riders who want road-bike efficiency without an excessively narrow lower position.

ENVE SES AR One-Piece

The SES AR One-Piece combines the bar and stem while retaining the all-road geometry. It is available in selected 38, 40 and 42 cm hood widths with multiple stem lengths.

A representative 100 mm by 40 cm model weighs approximately 360 grams. It uses IN-Route internal routing and an 18-degree flare.

The One-Piece is cleaner and potentially stiffer than the separate arrangement, but it is less adjustable. It makes most sense after the rider’s fit has been confirmed on a conventional cockpit.

ENVE SES Aero Pro One-Piece

The SES Aero Pro is ENVE’s flagship race cockpit. It was developed using professional rider feedback and is manufactured in small batches in Ogden, Utah.

Specifications include:

    • 345 to 365 gram weight, depending on size.
    • 79 mm reach.
    • 129 mm drop.
    • Approximately 30 mm total flare.
    • Minus-seven-degree stem angle.
    • Stem lengths from 90 to 140 mm.
    • Three hood/drop width combinations.
    • IN-Route compatibility.
    • Integrated computer mount.

Its key advantage is not low weight. The BLKTEC L8 and Cannondale Road SL are both substantially lighter. The ENVE emphasises premium construction, professional race development, aerodynamic shaping and broad ecosystem support.

Warranty and Reliability

ENVE provides lifetime coverage against manufacturing defects for eligible components purchased by the original owner from Pedal Passion. Bearings and certain internal wear components receive shorter coverage. ENVE also operates a crash-replacement program.

Frameset Pairings

ENVE cockpits are the most natural match for:

  • ENVE Melee.
  • ENVE Fray.
  • ENVE MOG.
  • TIME NXR with a compatible IN-Route cover.
  • Other frames supported by ENVE-compatible adapters.

The SES Aero suits the Melee and other race frames. The SES AR suits the Fray, NXR and fast all-road builds. The separate bars are preferable when fit flexibility matters, while the one-piece systems suit finalised premium builds.

BLKTEC R8: Aero Performance with Practical Routing

The BLKTEC R8 is a one-piece carbon cockpit developed around the Token Cable Box System. It allows fully or semi-integrated routing and uses an adjustable cover intended to simplify cable access.

Its specifications include:

  • Widths of 380, 400 and 420 mm.
  • Stem lengths from 90 to 130 mm in the standard published range.
  • 320 gram claimed weight in a 400 mm configuration.
  • 83.3 mm upper reach and 72 mm lower reach.
  • 125 mm drop.
  • Five-degree flare.
  • Minus-ten-degree stem angle.
  • Full or semi-integrated routing.
  • Electronic shifting compatibility.

Performance Character

The R8 prioritises aerodynamics and an aggressive position. Its minus-ten-degree stem angle places the bar lower than most competitors, while the relatively long upper reach creates a stretched race position.

This geometry requires careful fitting. A rider replacing a conventional minus-six-degree stem and 75 to 80 mm-reach bar may find the R8 meaningfully lower or longer even when the nominal stem length appears unchanged.

The adjustable cable cover is a practical feature. It can make installation and routing changes less disruptive than on a completely enclosed one-piece design, although hydraulic hose changes may still require brake disconnection.

At 320 grams, the R8 sits between the featherweight L8 and heavier aero designs such as the Cannondale SystemBar Road or ENVE Aero Pro.

Reliability

BLKTEC products carry a two-year warranty to the original owner against manufacturing defects

The Token-associated routing system may improve access to headset and hose components, but compatibility still needs to be confirmed for each frame.

Best Frameset Pairings

The R8 suits aggressive road builds around:

  • INCOLOR SR and SR+.
  • TIME NXR, subject to compatible headset hardware.
  • Selected Wilier race frames where adapters are available.
  • Other aero frames using compatible 1⅛-inch routing systems.

It is less suitable for riders who need a high bar position or short functional reach.

BLKTEC L8: The Lightweight Specialist

The BLKTEC L8 is the lightest cockpit in this comparison. It weighs a claimed 245 grams in a 380 mm by 100 mm configuration.

The range includes:

  • Hood widths of 360, 380, 400 and 420 mm.
  • Drops approximately 20 mm wider than the hoods.
  • Stem lengths from 80 to 150 mm.
  • Reach of 68 mm on the 360 mm version.
  • Reach of 72 mm on wider versions.
  • Drop of 120 mm on the 360 mm model.
  • Drop of 125 mm on wider models.
  • Full internal routing.
  • Electronic shifting compatibility.

Climbing and All-Round Performance

The L8 is designed for riders constructing a lightweight climbing or all-round race bike. It is 60 grams lighter than a representative Kreuza Apex and approximately 130 grams lighter than the Cannondale SystemBar Road.

The short reach makes it easier to achieve a compact position, particularly for riders using modern frames with relatively long reach. It also allows the use of a longer stem without placing the controls excessively far forward.

The L8’s wider drops add modest leverage without adopting the dramatic flare of an all-road bar.

Its low weight does not automatically mean excessive flex. BLKTEC describes it as a stiff, responsive one-piece structure.

The very low mass may contribute to more noticeable road feedback than a heavier, deliberately compliant handlebar. Tyres, pressure, tape and gloves should be used to manage overall comfort rather than expecting substantial vertical movement from an integrated race cockpit.

Best Frameset Pairings

The L8 is an attractive match for:

  • Evolve CIMA.
  • Cannondale SuperSix EVO with an appropriate adapter
  • TIME NXR.
  • INCOLOR SR+ or SSR
  • Lightweight Wilier climbing builds.
  • Any compatible custom build targeting a sub-7 kg total weight.

It provides much of the weight benefit of a specialist boutique cockpit at a lower price than ENVE’s flagship integrated systems.

OK, so which one?

Pedal Passion’s cockpit range covers four distinct priorities.

  • Kreuza delivers the strongest value. The Apex provides useful sizing, competitive weight and modern integration without forcing the buyer into premium-brand pricing. Its main weakness is its relatively short history and smaller body of independent long-term evidence.
  • Cannondale provides the best frame-specific integration. The SystemBar Road and Road SL are not universal solutions, but they are exceptionally well matched to the SuperSix EVO Gen 5. The standard model prioritises aerodynamic positioning, while the SL version focuses on minimum weight.
  • ENVE offers the most mature ecosystem. Its separate handlebars preserve fitting flexibility, while the one-piece systems provide premium integration for riders whose positions are already established. The high price reflects development, small-batch manufacturing on selected models and strong ownership support, but it does not always produce the lowest weight.
  • BLKTEC occupies an attractive middle ground. The R8 is a purposeful aero cockpit with practical routing features, while the L8 delivers an exceptional claimed weight and broad fit range. The L8 is particularly compelling for lightweight custom builds.

The most important decision is not the brand. It is whether the cockpit places the rider correctly.

A cockpit that is too wide sacrifices aerodynamic opportunity. One that is too narrow may compromise breathing, comfort and handling. Excessive reach creates hand pressure and poor control, while an overly short cockpit can disturb weight distribution. An unnecessarily low bar may look aggressive but become slower when the rider cannot maintain the position.

For riders who are still refining their fit, a separate ENVE handlebar and stem is the safest premium option. For a confirmed position on a CIMA, the Kreuza Apex offers outstanding value. For a SuperSix EVO Gen 5, the Cannondale SystemBar is the cleanest solution. For a lightweight build, the BLKTEC L8 is difficult to ignore.

The ultimate cockpit is not simply the stiffest, lightest or most aerodynamic. It is the one that lets the rider remain powerful, comfortable and confident for the entire ride.
