Carbon Blade Retention System
The LOOK Keo Blade Carbon Ceramic Vision Pedals replace a conventional metal retention spring with a carbon Blade positioned beneath the pedal body.
This carbon Blade performs two functions. It controls cleat retention and contributes to the pedal’s low-profile aerodynamic shape. The design produces a clean, positive engagement that experienced LOOK riders often describe as secure and reassuring under high power.
Unlike pedals with a retention screw, Blade tension is changed by replacing the carbon Blade with a different rating. This approach provides clearly defined release characteristics but does not offer gradual adjustment with a simple tool.
LOOK recommends choosing the lower tension if a rider is uncertain between two options.
Blade Selection
8Nm Blade:
- Best suited to cyclists learning to use clipless pedals
- Easier release
- Appropriate when straightforward disengagement is the priority
12Nm Blade:
- Balanced retention and release
- Suitable for regular road riders
- Sensible starting point for many experienced recreational cyclists
16Nm Blade:
- Firmer retention
- Appropriate for intensive training and racing
- Better suited to experienced clipless-pedal users
20Nm Blade:
- Maximum available hold
- Intended for racers and powerful sprinters
- Requires confident and well-practised release technique
A higher Blade rating does not improve power transfer by itself. Retention should be strong enough for secure riding but not so firm that releasing a foot becomes unnecessarily difficult.
Ceramic Bearing System
Ceramic bearing balls are exceptionally hard, smooth and resistant to deformation. LOOK claims its ceramic system can reduce rolling resistance by approximately 18% and provide four to six times the service life of conventional steel-bearing alternatives under the company’s test conditions.
Actual longevity will depend on:
- Rider weight and power
- Riding frequency
- Water and contamination exposure
- Cleaning practices
- Bearing adjustment
- Pedal strikes
- Storage conditions
- Maintenance quality
No pedal bearing creates a dramatic speed increase on its own. The practical value of the ceramic system lies in its smooth running, low friction and premium durability when properly maintained.
Large 705mm² Contact Surface
The 705mm² contact area creates broad support beneath the road shoe. This helps distribute pressure and gives the rider a stable platform during sprinting, climbing and sustained efforts.
A large contact area is particularly useful when combined with a stiff carbon-soled cycling shoe. The pedal and shoe work together to reduce unwanted flex and create a secure connection to the crank.
The 67mm platform width also helps stabilise the foot laterally. Riders may notice this most when accelerating forcefully, climbing out of the saddle or applying power through a fast corner exit.
Vision Biomotion Lighting
The lights are positioned at the rider’s feet rather than on the seatpost or saddle bag. As the cyclist pedals, each light follows a distinctive circular movement.
This biomotion can help other road users recognise the shape and movement of a cyclist. Instead of seeing only a small static red point, a driver sees lights moving in a pattern associated with pedalling.
LOOK claims that pedal or heel-positioned moving lights can make cyclists significantly more noticeable than a static seatpost light. These claims should not be interpreted as a guarantee that every driver will see or react appropriately to the rider.
The pedal lights should be used as an additional visibility layer alongside:
- A suitable primary rear light
- A suitable front light
- Reflective or high-contrast clothing where appropriate
- Predictable road positioning
- Clear signalling
- Defensive riding awareness
Four Lighting Modes
Day Flash
Day Flash produces bright, attention-grabbing bursts intended to remain visible in daylight. It is particularly useful for dawn rides, overcast conditions and roads where cyclists move between shade and bright sunlight.
Night Flash
Night Flash uses a lower-output pulse suitable for darkness. It provides recognisable movement without producing the same intense output required to compete with daylight.
Power Steady
Power Steady provides a continuous higher-output light intended for reduced-light environments where a stronger steady signal is appropriate.
Steady
Steady mode provides a lower-output continuous light designed to support extended operation.
Start and Stop Technology
The Vision modules detect movement and inactivity. After approximately 30 seconds without movement, the lights enter standby to conserve battery power. They reactivate when pedalling resumes.
This is useful during café stops, traffic delays and indoor storage because riders do not need to operate each light repeatedly during a normal journey.
The automatic function should not replace a pre-ride battery check. Riders should confirm that both lights activate and display sufficient charge before leaving.
Removable Light Modules
Each Vision module can be clipped out of the pedal without tools. The pedals remain fully functional when the lights are removed.
This allows riders to:
- Remove the lights for daylight racing
- Charge them away from the bike
- Reduce weight when lighting is unnecessary
- Protect the modules during washing
- Use the pedals as conventional Keo Blade Ceramic road pedals
- Replace a light module without replacing the entire pedal system
The removable design is one of the product’s strongest practical features. Riders gain visibility equipment without permanently changing the performance or operation of the pedal.
