Notable Tech, Materials & Construction

Shimano Di2 Wireless Shifting

The Shimano Ultegra R8170 Di2 Brake Set uses wireless controls at the handlebars, removing the need to route shift wires from the levers through the frame. Shift commands are transmitted to the compatible Di2 rear derailleur, which acts as the system’s wireless receiver and central control point.

The result is a cleaner handlebar area and a simpler installation on compatible road frames. Riders still receive the light, consistent button action associated with Shimano Di2, with no mechanical gear cables to stretch, corrode or gradually lose adjustment.

Shimano E-Tube Project allows riders and mechanics to configure shift-button functions, install firmware updates and personalise the electronic shifting system. Full and semi-synchronised shifting modes can also be configured according to rider preference.

SERVO WAVE Braking

SERVO WAVE changes the relationship between brake-lever movement and pad travel. The pads move rapidly towards the rotor during the first part of the lever stroke, providing a quick initial braking point. Once the pads contact the rotor, the system provides a broader control range for progressive braking modulation.

This makes it easier to apply small braking corrections on fast descents, control speed before corners and produce strong stopping power without an unnecessarily abrupt lever feel.

Ergonomic Lever Design

The Shimano Ultegra ST-R8170 hoods have a raised front section designed to provide a secure hand position during climbing, rough-road riding and sustained braking from the hoods. The lever body is shaped to distribute hand pressure and create a stable grip for long road rides.

Reach adjustment allows the lever blade to be positioned closer to or farther from the handlebar. Free-stroke adjustment further refines the amount of lever movement before the pads begin applying meaningful braking force.

Wider Brake Pad Clearance

The Shimano Ultegra BR-R8170 calipers provide ten per cent more pad-to-rotor clearance than the previous Ultegra generation. This additional space reduces the likelihood of light rotor contact after hard braking, out-of-saddle climbing or minor wheel movement.

The wider clearance also makes caliper alignment less sensitive to tiny setup variations, helping produce quieter operation on real-world roads.

ICE TECHNOLOGIES Compatibility

The calipers accept Shimano brake pads with optional cooling fins. These fins help transfer heat away from the braking surface, improving consistency during repeated braking and long descents.

For a complete heat-management system, the brakes can be paired with Shimano RT-CL800 or RT-MT800 rotors. These rotors use a layered construction designed to dissipate heat more effectively than a basic stainless steel rotor.

ONE WAY BLEEDING

Shimano’s ONE WAY BLEEDING system uses an internal oil-flow path designed to discourage air from becoming trapped in the hydraulic circuit. This helps qualified mechanics achieve a firm lever feel with a cleaner and more efficient bleeding procedure.

Size, Fit, Geometry & Measurements

Lever configuration:

  • Left and right lever pair
  • Designed for hydraulic disc brake road bikes
  • Designed around a Shimano 2x12-speed Di2 drivetrain

Handlebar compatibility:

  • Drop handlebars with a lever-clamping diameter of 23.8 to 24.2mm
  • Compatible with most modern compact, traditional and aerodynamic road handlebars where the lever mounting area meets Shimano’s dimensional requirements

Approximate lever length:

  • Shimano product imagery indicates an approximate reach dimension of 164mm
  • This measurement should not be treated as a bicycle-fit reach specification because final hand position also depends on handlebar shape, rotation and lever placement

Average weight:

  • Pair: Approximately 350g
  • Individual lever: Approximately 175g

Fit adjustments:

  • Adjustable brake-lever reach
  • Adjustable free stroke
  • Customisable button functions
  • Lever position can be adjusted along the handlebar mounting area
Who it is best suited for and where it is best suited

The Shimano Dura-Ace ST-R9270 Di2 Lever Set is best suited to competitive road cyclists, criterium racers, triathletes and performance-focused enthusiasts building a flagship hydraulic disc brake road bike.

Industry Feedback, Rider Reviews and our own opinion

Cycling Weekly, 21 March 2022

Cycling Weekly’s review of the complete Dura-Ace R9200 groupset praised the speed and reliability of the electronic shifting. The lever shape was considered supportive and comfortable, while the wireless controls contributed to a much cleaner installation.

The review found that Shimano’s new braking arrangement offered excellent modulation and predictable power. Rather than creating an aggressively sharp response, the system gave riders a broad control range suitable for technical cornering and long descents.

road.cc, 29 May 2024

In its comparison of Shimano Dura-Ace R9200 and SRAM Red AXS, road.cc identified Shimano’s braking feel and shift speed as major strengths. The Shimano controls offered a familiar button layout, refined hydraulic modulation and fast front and rear shifts.

The comparison also noted that lever ergonomics remain personal. Shimano’s raised hood peak creates a clearly defined hand position, while SRAM offers independent pad-contact adjustment and a different lever-body shape. Riders choosing between the systems should ideally test both before committing to a complete drivetrain.

Rider and Community Feedback

Riders frequently praise the Shimano Dura-Ace ST-R9270 for its light button action and positive shift response. The buttons are easier to distinguish than those on earlier Di2 generations, reducing the likelihood of pressing the wrong control when wearing gloves or riding over rough surfaces.

The hood shape is particularly well received by racers and aggressive road riders. The raised front section provides a secure surface to push against during hard seated efforts, while the longer body offers more support during endurance riding.

Other commonly reported positive points include:

  • Fast and consistent gear changes
  • Comfortable hood shape on long rides
  • Secure grip during climbing and sprinting
  • Strong braking power with progressive modulation
  • Long lever-battery life
  • Straightforward CR1632 battery replacement
  • Clean cockpit without Di2 shift wires
  • Customisable shift-button functions
  • Compatibility with satellite sprint and climbing controls
  • Low weight compared with less expensive Shimano controls

Some users note that firmware updates for the wireless controls may require a temporary wired connection. This is typically handled during a scheduled bicycle service and does not affect normal wireless shifting.

Product Care & Warranty Info

Product Care & Warranty Information

  • Clean the lever bodies and hood covers using mild soapy water and a soft cloth.
  • Do not use aggressive solvents, penetrating oils or silicone sprays around the controls.
  • Wipe away sweat after indoor training because dried salt can damage finishes and hardware.
  • Avoid directing high-pressure water at the electronic buttons, battery covers or hydraulic connections.
  • Use one CR1632 battery in each lever and observe the correct battery orientation.
  • Replace depleted batteries as a matched pair where practical.
  • Keep spare CR1632 batteries in a dry location rather than loose with metal tools.
  • Check wireless pairing and battery status before major events.
  • Keep firmware current through Shimano E-Tube Project.
  • Use a wired connection or an authorised Shimano workshop when required for lever firmware updates.
  • Keep brake rotors and pads free from oil and contamination.
  • Use Shimano mineral oil only.
  • Never add DOT brake fluid to the system.
  • Inspect the carbon-fibre blades and brackets after a crash.
  • Replace damaged bracket covers to preserve grip and weather protection.
  • Use a torque wrench when mounting the levers to carbon handlebars.
  • Have the hydraulic brakes bled if lever feel becomes soft or inconsistent.
  • Arrange installation through a qualified bicycle mechanic if hoses need to be connected or shortened.

Shimano Dura-Ace components purchased new through authorised Australian distribution are generally covered by Shimano Australia’s three-year limited warranty against qualifying defects in materials and workmanship. Australian Consumer Law protections also apply.
