Integrated power meter and chainring

The SRAM RED AXS Aero Power Meter Kit integrates the spider-based power meter directly into the aero chainring. This eliminates the separate chainring-to-spider interface found in a modular system and creates a stiff connection between the crankarms, measurement system and chain-driving teeth.

This integrated architecture has several performance benefits:

Lower component weight
High structural stiffness
Consistent torque transfer
Clean aerodynamic profile
Accurate spider-based measurement
Reduced number of mechanical interfaces
Premium appearance on aero road and triathlon bikes

The compromise is reduced modularity. The power meter and chainring form one assembly, so changing gearing or replacing worn teeth requires a complete compatible power-meter chainring kit.

Spider-based power measurement

Strain gauges within the spider detect total torque passing from the crankarms into the chainring. The power meter combines torque with cadence to calculate power in watts.

Spider measurement captures the combined contribution of both legs. Left-to-right balance is calculated from the distribution of power through the crank rotation rather than measured by two fully independent sensors.

This system provides the key data used for:

Structured interval sessions
Functional threshold power testing
Race pacing
Time-trial pacing
Triathlon pacing
Training-load management
Aerodynamic testing
Long-ride fatigue analysis
Performance comparison between events

Temperature compensation

Active temperature compensation helps maintain consistent measurement as environmental conditions change. This is particularly useful in Australia, where an early-morning training session can progress from cool conditions into strong heat.

Temperature compensation reduces the need to repeatedly recalibrate during a ride, although performing a manual zero before an important race or testing session remains good practice.

X-SYNC chain retention

SRAM X-SYNC uses alternating wide and narrow teeth that correspond with the inner and outer links of the chain. Tall, square-edged teeth engage the chain early, while shaped recesses help prevent dirt from accumulating around the rollers.

Chainring selection

44T

The 44T version is the most versatile option for gravel racing, rolling road courses and riders who want a more manageable climbing gear. When paired with a wide-range cassette, it gives the drivetrain greater climbing flexibility than the larger aero rings.

46T

The 46T version balances climbing range with high-speed road performance. It suits fast gravel races, cyclocross, all-road riding and rolling sealed-road courses.

48T

The 48T option is well suited to criterium racing, fast road riding and triathlon courses with moderate climbing. It provides useful top-end speed without being as demanding on climbs as a 52T or larger chainring.

50T

The 50T version is a popular road, time-trial and triathlon choice. Paired with a cassette beginning at 10 teeth, it delivers a very high top gear for fast races and solo efforts.

52T and 54T

These sizes are aimed at stronger road racers, time-trial riders and triathletes riding fast courses. The selected rear cassette must provide an acceptable low gear for local terrain.

56T and 58T

The 56T and 58T options are specialist sizes for high-speed time trials, triathlons and flat racing. They require careful frame-clearance and chain-length checks.

60T, 64T and 68T

These are highly specialised chainring sizes intended for very fast time-trial, pursuit or selected track-style applications. Frame clearance, chain length and drivetrain compatibility must be confirmed before purchase.

Road and Road Wide fit

The 6.5mm chainring offset can support different installed chainlines depending on the compatible crankarm and spindle configuration.

Standard Road DUB configurations commonly produce an approximately 45mm chainline.
Road Wide configurations commonly produce an approximately 47.5mm chainline.

The correct setup depends on the frame, crankarms, spindle and rear drivetrain. A wider crankset should not be installed solely to create tyre clearance without checking cassette alignment and derailleur compatibility.

The SRAM RED AXS Aero Power Meter Kit is best suited to competitive triathletes, time-trial riders, criterium racers, fast gravel cyclists and performance-focused road riders who want accurate power data and a clean 1x drivetrain.

Chain and chainring care

Measure chain wear regularly.
Replace a worn chain before it damages the chainring and cassette.
Use a chain approved for the complete drivetrain.
Maintain the correct chain length.
Inspect the teeth following a dropped chain or impact.
Check for hooked, chipped or deformed teeth.
Ensure that the chain sits correctly on the X-SYNC profile.
Replace severely worn or damaged chainring assemblies.

Installation

The kit attaches to compatible crankarms with SRAM’s eight-bolt direct-mount interface. Installation should include:

Crankarm compatibility check
Chainring-size selection
Frame-clearance assessment
Chainline confirmation
Correct fastener installation
Specified tightening sequence
Calibrated torque wrench use
Chain sizing
Rear-derailleur setup
Firmware update
Power-meter pairing
Zero-offset calibration
Loaded test ride

Professional bicycle workshop installation is recommended, particularly for triathlon bikes, internally routed frames and drivetrains changing between chainring sizes.

Warranty

SRAM generally provides the original owner with a two-year limited warranty against qualifying defects in materials or workmanship.

DC Rainmaker published an in-depth review of SRAM RED AXS and its Quarq-based power meter on 16 May 2024 after more than two months of riding. The power meter was assessed against established reference devices through steady efforts, changing intensities and harder accelerations. The recorded power and cadence data aligned closely with the comparison units, while ANT+ and Bluetooth communication worked reliably with mainstream cycling computers.

The review also praised SRAM’s broader electronic integration, including compatibility with Garmin, Wahoo and Hammerhead head units. Its findings support the platform as a serious training and race tool rather than an aero chainring with power measurement added as an afterthought.

Owners of compatible non-power SRAM RED and Force cranksets also appreciate that the kit provides a direct route to integrated power measurement without replacing the crankarms.

The most common criticism is replacement expense. Riders who change chainring size frequently or wear through rings quickly may prefer a modular power-meter spider with separately replaceable chainrings.

Some forum contributors also favour power-meter pedals because they can be moved between several bikes. In contrast, riders with a dedicated race bike often prefer the SRAM kit because it creates a cleaner permanent installation.
