Hollow carbon crankarm construction

The SRAM RED AXS E1 Crankset uses hollow carbon crankarms made with an optimised fibre lay-up. Carbon material is concentrated in structurally important areas while unnecessary material is removed from lower-stress zones.

This construction helps SRAM reduce weight without sacrificing the lateral stiffness required for sprinting, climbing and shifting under load. SRAM claims the updated E1 crankset is 29 grams lighter than the previous RED generation.

The low mass will not transform performance in isolation, but it complements a lightweight race bike and contributes to a responsive feel during accelerations and out-of-saddle climbing.

One-piece aluminium chainrings

The large and small chainrings are manufactured as one integrated aluminium structure rather than two independently mounted rings. This creates a very stiff relationship between the two chainrings and allows SRAM to position the shifting ramps, pins and pickup points with high precision.

The trade-off is that the individual chainrings cannot be replaced separately. When the teeth eventually wear out, the complete double-chainring assembly must be replaced.

X-Range gearing

SRAM X-Range road gearing uses smaller front chainrings in combination with cassettes beginning at a 10-tooth sprocket. This produces a wide total gear range without relying on an excessively large difference between the front chainrings.

Every available combination uses a 13-tooth jump:

  • 46/33T
  • 48/35T
  • 50/37T

The smaller difference reduces the cadence change when shifting between chainrings. It also requires fewer compensating rear shifts to return to the rider’s preferred cadence.

Eight-bolt direct mount

The chainring assembly attaches to the crankarms through SRAM’s eight-bolt direct-mount interface. This modular design allows the crankarms to accept compatible SRAM non-power chainrings, power-meter spiders and integrated power-meter chainring assemblies.

A rider can therefore purchase the non-power crankset and later convert it to power measurement without replacing the hollow carbon crankarms.

DUB spindle technology

The SRAM DUB system uses a 28.99mm spindle. It is designed to balance spindle stiffness, bearing size, sealing and compatibility across common road bottom-bracket standards.

A frame-specific SRAM Road DUB bottom bracket connects the crankset to common shell types, including selected:

  • BSA threaded frames
  • PressFit frames
  • T47 frames
  • BB86 frames
  • BB30 or PF30 frames using the appropriate SRAM DUB bottom bracket

DUB does not mean one bottom bracket fits every frame. The bottom bracket must match both the DUB spindle and the bicycle’s shell standard.

Size, Fit, Geometry & Measurements

160mm crankarms

The 160mm option suits smaller riders, cyclists with limited hip mobility and riders seeking a more open hip angle. It can also provide additional pedal clearance during criterium cornering and allow a lower aerodynamic torso position without excessive hip closure.

165mm crankarms

The 165mm length has become increasingly popular among road racers and triathletes. It can reduce peak hip and knee flexion while supporting a smoother, higher-cadence pedalling style.

167.5mm crankarms

The 167.5mm size offers a useful intermediate option for riders who find 165mm too short and 170mm slightly too long. It allows more precise fitting than the traditional five-millimetre jumps between crank lengths.

170mm crankarms

The 170mm option is a versatile choice that suits a wide range of road cyclists. It offers a familiar feel while providing slightly more pedal clearance than a 172.5mm or 175mm crank.

172.5mm crankarms

The 172.5mm version remains a widely used road size and is the length on which SRAM bases the crankset’s published 545-gram weight.

175mm crankarms

The 175mm option suits riders whose leg proportions, joint mobility and established fit favour a longer pedal circle. Rider height alone should not be used to select this length.

Crank-length fitting considerations

Changing crank length affects the position of the pedals at both the top and bottom of the stroke. When moving from a longer crank to a shorter one, the saddle will generally need to be raised by approximately the same amount as the reduction in crank length.

For example, changing from 172.5mm to 165mm cranks may require an initial saddle-height increase of approximately 7.5mm.

Chainring selection

46/33T

The 46/33T combination provides the easiest climbing gears of the three options. It is well suited to gran fondos, steep Australian climbs, long endurance rides and riders who prefer a high cadence.

When paired with a 10-36T cassette, the 33-tooth inner chainring provides a climbing ratio below one-to-one.

48/35T

The 48/35T combination is the most versatile choice for club riding, racing and mixed terrain. It provides useful climbing performance without sacrificing substantial top-end speed.

This is the configuration used for SRAM’s claimed 545-gram crankset weight when fitted with 172.5mm arms.

50/37T

The 50/37T combination is intended for powerful road racers, fast bunch riders and flatter courses. When paired with a cassette beginning at 10 teeth, the 50-tooth outer ring provides a higher top gear than a traditional 50-tooth chainring combined with an 11-tooth cassette.

Who it is best suited for and where it is best suited

The SRAM RED AXS E1 Crankset is best suited to road racers, triathletes, gran fondo riders and performance-focused cyclists building a lightweight SRAM AXS road bike. Its stiff one-piece chainrings provide fast front shifting.

Industry Feedback, Rider Reviews and our own opinion

Cyclist published its SRAM RED AXS E1 review on 15 May 2024. The publication highlighted the groupset’s competitive weight, accurate shifting and extensive electronic integration. The review found the update refined rather than revolutionary in every area, but regarded the overall package as a meaningful improvement over the previous generation.

GRAN FONDO Cycling Magazine tested SRAM RED AXS E1 on 15 May 2024 and found that the groupset’s improvements extended beyond simple weight reduction. The publication praised SRAM’s focus on usability, gearing choice and fit, including the introduction of shorter crankarms for riders seeking a more open hip angle.

Bikerumor published a long-term review on 27 January 2025 after approximately eight months of riding. The reviewer described the complete RED AXS E1 system as refined, dependable and enjoyable to use. Continued compatibility with existing 12-speed AXS components was also viewed positively because riders could upgrade selected parts rather than replacing the entire drivetrain.

Product Care & Warranty Info

Routine cleaning

  • Wash the crankset with mild bicycle cleaner, clean water and a soft cloth.
  • Avoid aggressive solvents and abrasive polishing products.
  • Do not direct high-pressure water at the bottom-bracket seals.
  • Remove accumulated chain lubricant from the chainrings and crankarms.
  • Dry the crankset following wet rides.
  • Avoid applying degreaser directly to bottom-bracket bearings.

Carbon crankarm inspection

Inspect the crankarms regularly for:

  • Cracks
  • Deep scratches
  • Gouges
  • Raised or separated carbon fibres
  • Crushing damage
  • Pedal-thread damage
  • Damage around the spindle interface
  • Heavy heel rub
  • Significant impact marks
