Hot Melt Waxing

Bike Chain Waxing

Discover professional chain waxing with Silca's hot melt system at our Brisbane bike workshop. Enhance durability, reduce friction, and enjoy smoother, quieter performance cycling.

We do sell new chains that are waxed ready from us or we can help to clean and wax your existing chain. Our standard wax solution is by using Silca Secret Blend with Endurance Chip to ensure your chain will last at least 500km in dry weather in Brisbane before needing to rewax. Different blends can be provided upon request.

Note: We will inspect your existing chain before performing a waxing service. Chains that show significant wear are not suitable for waxing, and it is not recommended to begin a waxed‑chain system with a worn chain. In these cases, starting with a fresh, unworn chain is the correct approach for optimal performance and longevity.

Breaking In

Chain waxed by us will be properly broken in before fitting on to your bike to ensure smooth riding and shifting as well as keeping the wax flaking to minimal.

Performance, Durability

If you use a different brand of chain such as KMC, SUMC, YBN or any brands that are not mentioned.

Please consult us to see what is the best result of waxing we can provide.

What Riders Ask
What are some pros and cons of traditional oil lubricants?

Advantages of Oil:

  • Quick and easy application
  • No special equipment needed
  • Good performance in wet conditions
  • More forgiving of application technique
  • Can be topped up without cleaning

Disadvantages (especially in hot Queensland conditions):

  • Attracts dust and creates abrasive paste
  • Degrades in extreme heat
  • Requires more frequent cleaning
  • Chains wear faster due to contamination
What is the waxing process and why you should invest in a professional application?

Initial Setup:

  • Clean chain thoroughly (multiple cycles may be needed). At Pedal Passion we use ultrasonic cleaning
  • Remove all factory lubrication
  • Allow chain to dry completely
  • Prepare wax pot with appropriate amount of wax

Waxing:

  • Melt wax completely (use double boiler method if needed)
  • Lower chain into melted wax
  • Agitate chain to ensure complete coverage
  • Remove chain and let excess wax drip off
  • Hang chain to cool and solidify
  • Once cool, flex chain to break up excess wax

Re-Waxing:

  • Clean chain in melted wax (no need for solvent cleaning)
  • Repeat waxing process
  • Typically takes 15-20 minutes after initial setup
  • Much faster than first waxing
