The two pulleys perform different functions within the derailleur cage.
The upper guide pulley sits close to the cassette and helps position the chain beneath the selected sprocket. Its alignment has a direct effect on shift precision, drivetrain noise and the derailleur’s ability to move accurately across the cassette.
The lower tension pulley manages the return path of the chain and helps the rear derailleur maintain appropriate chain tension as the drivetrain moves between sprockets.
The pulleys should be installed in their correct positions rather than treated as interchangeable parts.
Eleven-tooth original equipment geometry
Both pulley wheels use 11 teeth, maintaining the chain path and cage geometry developed for the Shimano Ultegra RD-R8150 rear derailleur.
Retaining Shimano’s original pulley size helps preserve:

Steel sealed bearings
The pulley set uses steel bearings to reduce rotational resistance and support smooth operation. Sealing helps protect the bearing surfaces from fine road dust, water and drivetrain contamination.
