SRAM AXS wireless shifting

SRAM AXS allows the derailleur to receive shift commands wirelessly from compatible shift-brake controls and auxiliary AXS controllers. Removing the mechanical gear cable eliminates cable stretch, contaminated housing and gradual deterioration in shift-cable movement.

The SRAM AXS app can be used to:

Pair compatible drivetrain components
Check derailleur battery status
Assign shift-button functions
Configure sequential or compensating shifting
Install firmware updates
Perform electronic micro-adjustment
Review component status
Receive maintenance reminders

Electronic adjustment cannot correct a bent derailleur hanger. The hanger, rear wheel and cassette must be mechanically aligned before micro-adjustment is used.

Carbon cage construction

The carbon derailleur cage reduces weight while providing the stiffness required to position the pulley wheels accurately beneath the cassette. A stiff cage helps maintain consistent chain alignment during acceleration, climbing and rapid multi-shifts.

Carbon also gives the SRAM Force AXS E1 Rear Derailleur a more premium appearance than lower-tier alternatives. However, the cage should be inspected carefully after a crash, transport incident or impact with roadside debris.

Larger X-SYNC pulley wheels

The E1 generation uses larger pulley wheels to reduce the amount each chain link must articulate as it passes through the derailleur. SRAM promotes this as an efficiency improvement over the previous Force design.

assette compatibility

10-28T

A close-ratio cassette suited to road racing, time trials and flatter terrain. Smaller jumps between sprockets help riders maintain a consistent cadence, although the climbing range is more limited.

10-30T

A versatile racing and fast group-ride option that provides a slightly easier climbing gear without introducing large jumps through the cassette.

10-33T

A balanced choice for rolling roads, gran fondos and mixed terrain. It provides a useful climbing gear while retaining relatively close progression through the middle of the cassette.

10-36T

The widest compatible option and the best choice for steep climbs, alpine cycling events and riders who prefer a higher cadence on long gradients.

Drivetrain compatibility

Number of speeds: 12
Drivetrain configurations: 1x12 and 2x12
Minimum supported cassette: 10-28T
Maximum supported cassette: 10-36T
Maximum rear sprocket: 36T
Chain compatibility: SRAM Road Flattop D1 or E1
Mounting system: Conventional rear derailleur hanger
Shift controls: Compatible SRAM AXS controls
Freehub requirement: Determined by the cassette, with most SRAM 10-tooth road cassettes requiring an XDR freehub

Frame and wheel compatibility checks

Before installation, confirm that:

The bicycle has a compatible rear derailleur hanger.
The hanger is straight and secured correctly.
The cassette is an approved SRAM 12-speed road model.
The rear wheel has the correct freehub body.
The drivetrain uses a compatible SRAM Road Flattop chain.

We think it is best suited for racers, endurance cyclists, triathletes and performance-focused riders who want dependable wireless shifting without the premium cost of SRAM RED. A 10-28T or 10-30T cassette provides close gearing for criteriums, time trials and fast coastal bunch rides, while 10-33T and 10-36T options deliver more manageable climbing gears for hills.

Routine cleaning

Clean the derailleur with mild bicycle cleaner, water and a soft brush.
Remove dirt and old lubricant from the pulley wheels.
Avoid directing high-pressure water at the motor housing, pivots, bearings or battery contacts.
Dry the derailleur after wet rides.
Remove excess chain lubricant before it attracts dust.
Avoid harsh solvents around seals and electronic components.

Chain and cassette maintenance

Clean and lubricate the SRAM Flattop chain regularly.
Select chain lubricant for dry, wet or mixed riding conditions.
Remove excess lubricant after application.
Check chain wear using a compatible chain-wear gauge.
Replace a worn chain before it accelerates cassette and pulley wear.
Inspect cassette teeth for hooking or damage.
Confirm chain length after changing cassette or chainring size.

Pulley care

Inspect the pulley teeth for abnormal wear.
Check the pulleys for excessive sideways movement.
Remove grass, fibres and debris wound behind the pulley wheels.
Follow SRAM’s pulley orientation when replacing worn parts.
Do not interchange upper and lower pulleys unless specifically approved.
Replace rough or contaminated pulley bearings as required.

Battery maintenance

Charge the battery with an approved SRAM AXS charger.
Check battery status before long rides and cycling events.
Carry a charged spare on remote or multi-day rides.
Keep the electrical contacts clean and dry.
Fit the protective cover when the battery is removed.
Avoid storing the battery in a fully discharged state.
Replace swollen, cracked or damaged batteries.
Confirm that the battery latch is fully engaged before riding.

Crash and hanger inspection

After a crash, rear-wheel impact or transport incident, inspect:

Derailleur hanger alignment
Derailleur mounting security
Carbon cage condition
Pulley alignment
Battery latch
Motor housing
Chain condition
Cassette condition
Rear wheel and spokes

Poor shifting following an impact is often caused by a bent hanger rather than an electronic fault. Electronic micro-adjustment should not be used to disguise mechanical misalignment.

Warranty

SRAM generally provides the original owner with a two-year limited warranty against qualifying defects in materials or workmanship.

Cyclingnews published its SRAM Force AXS review on 27 June 2025 and concluded that the updated system provided excellent performance while significantly narrowing the gap to flagship RED. The review highlighted broad improvements across the groupset and positioned Force as a strong performance choice for riders who do not need the lightest possible SRAM components.

Cyclist published its review on 11 September 2025 and described the new SRAM Force AXS as a comprehensive update with improved ergonomics and more accurate shifting. The publication noted that the complete 2x groupset with a spider-based power meter was approximately 183 grams lighter than the previous Force generation, while remaining substantially less expensive than RED. It found shifting accurate and dependable, although not always as quiet as the best competing systems.

GRAN FONDO Cycling Magazine tested SRAM Force AXS on 17 June 2025 and found that much of RED’s premium technology had successfully moved into the Force range. Its first impressions placed Force exceptionally close to RED in practical performance, with price, materials and weight providing the main points of separation.

SRAM RED AXS E1 Rear Derailleur

SRAM RED advantages:

Approximately 22 grams lighter based on commonly listed figures
Ceramic pulley bearings
Premium carbon and metal construction
Flagship finish
Best suited to no-compromise race bikes

SRAM Force advantages:

Significantly lower purchase price
Same 10-28T to 10-36T cassette range
Compatible with 1x and 2x drivetrains
Carbon cage
Larger X-SYNC pulleys
Better value for most club racers and endurance cyclists

RED is the better choice where minimum weight is essential. Force offers more compelling value because its shifting functionality and gearing compatibility are very similar.

Previous-Generation SRAM Force AXS D2 Rear Derailleur

Previous-generation advantages:

Often available at a discounted price
Proven wireless AXS operation
Compatible with established SRAM 12-speed road drivetrains
Uses the same removable battery format
Broad workshop familiarity

Force E1 advantages:

12 grams lighter
New carbon cage design
Larger pulley wheels
