Key Features & Technical Specifications

Drivetrain

  • Drivetrain format: 1x13-speed
  • Shifting system: SRAM AXS wireless electronic
  • Rear derailleur mounting: SRAM Full Mount
  • Frame requirement: UDH-compatible frame with suitable Full Mount clearance
  • Cassette options: Red XG-1391, Force XG-1371 or Rival XG-1351
  • Cassette ratio: 10-46T
  • Individual sprockets: 10, 11, 12, 13, 15, 17, 19, 21, 24, 28, 32, 38 and 46 teeth
  • Total cassette range: 460%
  • Freehub requirement: SRAM XDR
  • Chain compatibility: SRAM Road Flattop E1
  • Maximum rear sprocket: 46T
  • Front derailleur: Not used
  • Shift configuration: SRAM eTap logic, normally left paddle for an easier gear and right paddle for a harder gear
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth and ANT+ through the AXS ecosystem

The cassette progression provides one-tooth jumps across the four smallest sprockets, followed by controlled steps through the middle of the range. This helps riders maintain cadence on sealed roads and fast gravel without sacrificing the 46T climbing sprocket required for steep, loose ascents.

Brake system

  • Brake type: Hydraulic disc
  • Caliper mounting: Flat Mount
  • Recommended rotor arrangement: Common builds use 160mm front and rear, subject to frame, fork, rider weight and manufacturer limits
  • Lever reach: Externally adjustable
  • Brake fluid: SRAM DOT brake fluid
  • Lever operation: Designed for one-finger braking from the hoods or drops
  • Hose length and routing: Dependent on the selected left and right brake assemblies and bicycle frame

The E1 control architecture requires substantially less lever force than its preceding design, with claimed reductions of 80% from the hoods and 33% from the drops.

Crankset and gearing options

  • Crank lengths: 160mm, 165mm, 170mm, 172.5mm and 175mm
  • Standard chainrings: 38T, 40T, 42T, 44T and 46T
  • Force aero chainring options: Up to 50T in compatible configurations
  • Chainline: 47.5mm
  • Chainring offset: 6.5mm
  • Chainring fitting: SRAM eight-bolt direct mount
  • Bottom-bracket interface: DUB Wide
  • Power meter: Optional spindle-based AXS power meter on compatible configurations

A 38T or 40T chainring suits steep, unsealed climbing and loaded adventure riding. A 42T represents a versatile mixed-surface choice, while 44T or 46T will appeal to stronger riders prioritising fast gravel roads, bunch riding and sealed-road speed.

Important compatibility requirements

  • The frame must be approved for SRAM Full Mount and UDH-based drivetrain installation.
  • The rear wheel must have an XDR driver.
  • A Road Wide DUB bottom bracket is required when selecting an XPLR Wide crankset.
  • Brake hoses may require cutting and bleeding during installation.
  • Brake rotors, bottom bracket, batteries and charger should be checked against the exact configurator selection because they may not be included in every package.
  • Full Mount XPLR E1 parts are not a direct replacement for a conventional hanger-mounted derailleur on an older non-UDH gravel frame.
Notable Tech, Materials & Construction

AXS wireless technology

SRAM AXS removes the shift wires between the controls and rear derailleur. This produces a clean cockpit, supports flexible component combinations and allows shifting behaviour to be personalised through the AXS app. The removable derailleur battery is convenient for charging, transport and carrying a spare on remote rides.

Full Mount architecture

Instead of attaching to a separate conventional derailleur hanger, the XPLR E1 rear derailleur mounts around the rear axle on an approved UDH frame. This creates a rigid connection, removes hanger alignment as a setup variable and improves resistance to impacts encountered on rocky gravel roads.

The derailleur uses a setup process without traditional high, low and B-adjustment screws. Replaceable components also improve long-term serviceability compared with treating the entire derailleur as one disposable assembly.

X-Range gearing

The 10-46T cassette combines a high-speed 10T sprocket with a 46T climbing gear. Its 13 sprockets allow tighter steps through commonly used road and rolling-gravel ratios than many wide-range 12-speed systems.

X-SYNC chain retention

SRAM’s alternating wide and narrow chainring teeth engage corresponding chain links to improve chain security over corrugations, washouts and rough fire roads. Mud-clearing recesses help manage contaminated conditions, while eliminating the front derailleur reduces mechanical complexity.

DUB Wide construction

The DUB spindle and bottom-bracket system is designed to balance bearing durability, stiffness and broad frame compatibility. The Wide configuration produces the 47.5mm chainline used for XPLR fitment and helps accommodate modern gravel frames with wider tyre clearance.

Force and Rival construction differences

Force is the weight-focused option, using carbon crank arms, a more highly finished cassette and premium controls with additional AXS functionality. Rival uses carefully shaped aluminium components to reduce purchase and replacement costs while retaining the central E1 shifting, braking and Full Mount technologies.

This cross-match approach lets riders spend more on the components that most influence the ride. A popular performance-value configuration is Force controls and crankset paired with a Rival cassette or rear derailleur, retaining premium touchpoints while lowering the initial price and future wear-part costs.

Size, Fit, Geometry & Measurements

Crank length

Available crank lengths normally run from 160mm to 175mm. Shorter 160mm or 165mm cranks can increase pedal clearance, reduce hip and knee flexion at the top of the stroke and suit modern high-cadence bike fitting. Traditional 170mm, 172.5mm and 175mm options remain available for riders whose bike fit or pedalling preference requires them.

Chainring selection

  • 38T: Maximum climbing assistance for very steep gravel, bikepacking or less powerful riders
  • 40T: Strong climbing range with sufficient top speed for most recreational gravel riding
  • 42T: Balanced choice for mixed sealed and unsealed riding
  • 44T: Fast gravel racing, flatter terrain and all-road use
  • 46T: High-speed riding where climbing gradients are less severe

Frame fit

A compatible bicycle requires a UDH interface approved for Full Mount XPLR, an XDR-equipped rear wheel and suitable Flat Mount brake interfaces. SRAM advises using the XPLR Wide crank configuration on frames with longer gravel-oriented chainstays, while compatible road crank configurations may suit frames with shorter chainstays. Fit should be checked against the frame manufacturer’s approved drivetrain list before purchase.

Who it is best suited for and How it performs in local conductions

The SRAM AXS XPLR E1 Cross-Match Gravel Groupset is best suited to riders building or upgrading a modern UDH-compatible gravel bike for fast recreational riding, gravel racing, endurance events and mixed-surface exploration.
