Carbon crankarm construction

The SRAM Force AXS E1 Crankset uses reshaped carbon crankarms to balance stiffness, low weight and durability. Carbon allows material to be concentrated around high-load areas while reducing unnecessary mass elsewhere.

This construction produces a direct response during out-of-saddle climbing, hard acceleration and sprinting. It also helps reduce the overall groupset weight without moving to the considerably more expensive SRAM RED crankset.

One-piece aluminium chainrings

The inner and outer chainrings are manufactured as a single integrated structure rather than two separately attached rings. This architecture was previously a key differentiator of SRAM’s flagship road cranksets.

The one-piece construction provides several benefits:

  • Increased lateral stiffness
  • Precise spacing between chainrings
  • Consistent interaction with the front derailleur
  • Faster shifts onto the large chainring

The principal trade-off is replacement cost. The inner and outer rings cannot normally be replaced separately, so the complete chainring assembly must be replaced when the teeth are worn or damaged.

X-Range gearing

SRAM X-Range gearing uses relatively compact front chainrings with road cassettes that begin at a 10-tooth sprocket. This provides substantial high-speed gearing while reducing the difference between the front chainrings.

All three combinations use a 13-tooth jump:

The smaller chainring difference limits the change in cadence when shifting at the front. It also reduces the number of compensating rear shifts required to return to the rider’s preferred cadence.

Eight-bolt direct-mount interface

The chainring assembly attaches through SRAM’s eight-bolt direct-mount system. This creates a stiff connection between the crankarms and chainrings while providing compatibility with approved SRAM power-meter components.

160mm crankarms

The shortest option can suit smaller riders, cyclists with restricted hip mobility and triathletes seeking a more open hip angle. It also increases pedal clearance through corners.

165mm crankarms

The 165mm option has become popular among riders moving away from traditional longer road cranks. It can reduce peak hip and knee flexion while supporting a smooth, high-cadence pedalling style.

170mm crankarms

The 170mm version provides a versatile middle ground and suits a broad range of road cyclists. It delivers a familiar feel while offering slightly more pedal clearance than longer options.

172.5mm crankarms

The 172.5mm version remains a common road-racing standard. It suits riders whose existing fit, flexibility and cadence work well with a moderately long crank.

Crank-length fitting considerations

Moving to a shorter crank changes the position of the pedal at both the top and bottom of the stroke. Saddle height normally requires adjustment to maintain similar leg extension.

For example, moving from a 172.5mm crank to a 165mm crank may require an initial saddle-height increase of approximately 7.5mm.

Who it is best suited for and where it is best suited

Its stiff one-piece chainrings provide crisp front shifting across rolling roads, while the three gearing combinations let riders tailor the bike for flat criteriums, mixed-terrain bunch rides or steep alpine routes.

Industry Feedback, Rider Reviews and our own opinion

Cyclingnews published its Force AXS review on 27 June 2025 and concluded that the system provided excellent performance while narrowing the gap between Force and SRAM’s flagship components. The crankset’s carbon construction and integrated chainrings formed an important part of that improved weight and performance package.

Slowtwitch assessed SRAM Force AXS from a triathlon perspective on 13 May 2026. The publication concluded that most triathletes would find it difficult to justify SRAM RED’s substantially higher price because Force delivered very similar practical performance, with much of RED’s advantage confined to lower weight and more premium finishing.

Product Care & Warranty Info

Routine cleaning

  • Wash the crankset with mild bicycle cleaner, clean water and a soft cloth.
  • Avoid aggressive solvents and abrasive polishing products.
  • Do not direct high-pressure water at the bottom-bracket seals.
  • Remove accumulated chain lubricant from the chainrings and crankarms.
  • Dry the crankset after wet rides.
  • Keep strong degreaser away from the bottom-bracket bearings.

Carbon crankarm inspection

Inspect the crankarms regularly for:

  • Cracks
  • Deep scratches
  • Gouges
  • Raised carbon fibres
  • Crushing damage
  • Pedal-thread damage
  • Damage around the spindle
  • Heavy heel rub
  • Significant impact marks

Stop riding if structural damage is suspected. Carbon crankarms should not be repaired with cosmetic filler, glue or general-purpose resin.

Chain and chainring maintenance

  • Clean and lubricate the chain regularly.
  • Select lubricant appropriate for local weather conditions.
  • Remove excess lubricant to reduce dust accumulation.
  • Measure chain wear with a compatible chain-checking tool.
  • Replace a worn chain before it damages the cassette and chainrings.
