Compatibility warning

The SRAM RED XPLR XG-1391 Cassette is not a direct replacement for a 12-speed road or gravel cassette. Converting an older bicycle generally requires a compatible 13-speed XPLR rear derailleur, Road Flattop chain, suitable AXS controls and a UDH-compatible frame that accepts the corresponding Full Mount derailleur.

Revised X-Dome construction

SRAM uses an advanced XG cassette structure to achieve high stiffness at a remarkably low weight. The smaller sprockets are extensively machined from hardened steel, creating a lightweight structure that resists twisting during shifting and high-torque pedalling.

The three largest sprockets incorporate aluminium to reduce mass further. This material distribution keeps durable steel in the heavily used high-speed section while allowing SRAM to remove weight from the physically larger climbing sprockets.

The result is a cassette that weighs approximately 95 grams less than the Force XPLR equivalent and approximately 195 grams less than the Rival XPLR model, based on published weights for the three 13-speed ranges.

Thirteen-speed ratio optimisation

Adding a thirteenth sprocket allows SRAM to expand the largest cog from the previous XPLR generation’s 44T to 46T while also reducing the jumps between the fastest gears.

The key benefit is not simply having another gear. It is the ability to combine:

XDR freehub compatibility

Despite adding a thirteenth sprocket, the SRAM RED XPLR XG-1391 Cassette fits the existing SRAM XDR freehub standard. The largest sprocket is positioned partly inboard towards the spokes, allowing the cassette to gain another ratio without requiring a wider freehub body.

This is valuable for riders who already own premium XDR gravel wheels because a new rear wheel or proprietary 13-speed freehub is not generally required.

The cassette does not fit directly onto Shimano HG, Microspline or standard SRAM XD freehubs.

Road Flattop chain compatibility

The cassette uses SRAM Road Flattop chain technology rather than a SRAM Eagle T-Type mountain bike chain. The distinctive flat-topped profile supports strength and clearance across the tightly spaced drivetrain.

Industry Feedback, Rider Reviews and our own opinion

Bikerumor introduced the SRAM RED XPLR AXS 13-speed drivetrain on 1 August 2024 and singled out its cassette as one of the most impressive individual components. The publication praised SRAM for expanding the range while creating three consecutive one-tooth jumps at the high-speed end. It also highlighted the decision to retain the established XDR freehub and Road Flattop chain rather than imposing an entirely new wheel or chain standard.

The Radavist published Josh Weinberg’s SRAM RED XPLR AXS review on 1 August 2024. The review found that the groupset successfully combined mountain-bike-derived derailleur durability with the low weight and close gearing required for modern gravel racing. The cassette’s ratio progression was viewed as central to that balance.

Product Care & Warranty Info

Routine cleaning

  • Clean the cassette regularly using a soft brush and bicycle-safe drivetrain cleaner.
  • Avoid soaking the freehub body or wheel bearings with degreaser.
  • Rinse gently and dry thoroughly after washing.
  • Do not direct high-pressure water at the cassette, freehub or hub seals.
  • Remove compacted mud and grass from between the sprockets.
  • Wipe away excess chain lubricant before it attracts gravel dust.

Chain maintenance

The cassette’s service life depends heavily on chain condition.

  • Measure chain wear regularly using a Flattop-compatible chain checker.
  • Replace the chain before elongation damages the sprocket teeth.
  • Use a lubricant suited to local riding conditions.
  • Remove excess lubricant after application.
  • Clean the chain after wet, muddy or dusty rides.
  • Use an approved SRAM PowerLock when replacing or reconnecting the chain.
  • Do not install an incompatible T-Type or conventional road chain.

Cassette inspection
