Refined 12-speed gear progression
The 11-34T gearing has been designed to balance climbing range with controlled cadence changes. Five consecutive one-tooth steps at the fast end provide close ratios for bunch riding, time spent on flat roads and high-speed efforts:
- 11 to 12T
- 12 to 13T
- 13 to 14T
- 14 to 15T
The cassette then introduces progressively larger jumps through the middle and climbing sections. This keeps the cassette compact where precise cadence control matters most while still providing a useful 34T bailout gear.
Shimano HG shift profiling
Each sprocket uses carefully positioned shift ramps and shaped teeth to guide a compatible 12-speed chain between ratios. The system is designed to provide clean, predictable shifting when paired with a correctly adjusted Shimano road derailleur and chain.
The Shimano 105 cassette does not carry the complete Hyperglide+ feature specification used by Shimano’s more expensive Ultegra and Dura-Ace road cassettes. Under normal road conditions, however, its shifting remains fast and controlled, particularly when the rider briefly reduces pedal pressure during demanding shifts.
Steel sprocket construction
All 12 sprockets are made from steel. This increases weight compared with more exotic titanium or extensively machined alternatives, but it provides dependable wear resistance and helps keep replacement costs reasonable.
